Yes! One of the absolute best Eurovision songs. Thank you, Jake! It’s the same Celine Dion we know and love, with a voice just as powerful as she has now! And yes, only vocals are live now, the orchestras were dropped in, 1999, I believe, since less countries were using them for their performances.

Cool you’re going vintage winners. Cool fact: besides winning it, that same night, she and Rene took their relationship from platonic to romantic. It’s a double win for Ms. Dion!
Other vintage winners you should react to:
1974 (its ABBA), 1978 (Israel’s first win), 1981 (strip!), 1982 and 1990 (peace songs from Big 5 counties), 1995 (majority instrumental), 1996 (Ireland’s last win), 1997 (Katrina “Walking On Sunshine” and the Waves won for the UK), and 1998 (Israel’s last win until this year).

Eurovision didn't exactly "launch" her career, although it did give it a bolster, and more exposure in Europe (France already well knew who Celine was at that time though). By 1988, Celine was already well on her way, having released many albums (albeit in french) and performed to sold-out concert halls and arenas. Also by the time Eurovision 1988 came around, Celine was in the process of being signed with CBS. It wasn't inked and permanent, but all the pieces of the puzzle were coming together for an English-language album release. Her manager Rene was forming important connections and acquaintances to make Celine into an international superstar. Just 2 years later, in 1990, Celine's first English album "Unison" was released...and the rest was history as they say.

Dustin aka dtcsk yeah and voting was one of the most exciting as Yugoslavia who voted last gave Celine Dion 6 points and no points to UK, so until they said their 12 there was a hope for UK that they will win.

The lyrics are actually about not wanting to be left behind as the world is heading towards the future/new century. She's addressing the poets and musicians of the future and wishing to keep singing as well. It's kind of an anthem to humanity you could say, and I think the uplifting lyrics were a big part of the reason why she won as well. :)

Her voice is the same because she tends to take care of it very well like all singers should do! Did you know that a day before a concert she doesn't speak not even one word for the hole day? She really respects the gift God gave her, that's why her voice is not different 30 years later

So, I think you also should watch:
    Abba 1974
Toto Cutugno (Hope I spelled it right) 1990
    Dana International 1998
Along with Celine, those are the most famous ESC winners ever.

    • @BellaMusical
      @BellaMusical 6 лет назад +1

Stanislav Fedenko Well, maybe the most famous winners, but there have been many famous songs and contestants in ESC. People probably don't know that the song Volare was in ESC. It was performed by Dominico Modugno from Italy (I think it was 1957 or 1958). Julio Iglesias competed for Spain in 1970. I'm pretty sure he has sold more albums than any single artist, ever... The original Jean Valjean (Colm Wilkinson) and Marius Pontmercy (Michael Ball) of Les Miserables has competed for Ireland and the UK. And Katrina and the Waves won for the UK. Other famous contestants include Bonnie Tyler, Engelbert Humperdinck, Il Volo, Jonsi, Blue, Jedward, Sertab Erener, MaNga, Olivia Newton-John, Cliff Richard, Ofra Haza, France Gall, Åse Kleveland (later the minister of Culture in Norway), Patricia Kaas, t.A.T.u., Umberto Tozzi, Monica Zetterlund... And of course, ABBA.

    • @BellaMusical
      @BellaMusical 6 лет назад

Oops. Wrong Jonsi, btw. The one I was thinking of is Jonsi from Sigur Ros, who has composed music for films like We Bought a Zoo. The Jonsi that has competed in ESC is not the same person.

1988 also had one of the most exciting voting conclusions. With the last country to vote, Switzerland received 7 points I think, and everybody and I mean everybody expected the 12 to go to the UK meaning the UK would be the winner. The UK didn't receive any! And Switzerland won. It was such a close finish!

she won in one of the most shocking votes ever....Switzerland and UK were the two frontrunners and when the last country reported, they gave enough points to Switzerland to put them one point ahead of UK, but it was like six or seven points, so the top amounts of points were left to be given out. People expected UK to get one of those top sets of points and win, based on how things were going, but that last country didn't give them any so UK was "pipped at the post," to borrow some British slang. :p

It is mainly about the astronauts.
    Lyrics:
    1st verse:
You, who are seeking the star
You, who are living a dream
    You, heroes of space
With hearts bigger than the Earth
    You, give me my chance,
    Carry me, far from here!
    CHORUS:
    Do not leave without me
    Let me follow you
You, who are flying towards other lives
    Let me live
    The greatest adventure
    The most beautiful trip
    That leads one day
    On suns, on planets
Of love [yeah, I find that corny too]
    2nd verse:
    You, the new poets
    You, the magical birds
    You, you will maybe
    Find new musics
    You, give me my chance
I want to sing, me too!
    CHORUS:
    Do not leave without me
    Let me follow you
You who are flying towards other lives
    Let me live
    The blue of infinity
    The joy to be free
    On rays, on suns,
    On songs, on wonders
And in a sky of love
    The blue of infinity
    The joy to be free
You who are seeking another life
You who are flying towards Year 2000
    Do not leave without me!

You should react to Iceland 2011. The story around that song is really heartwarming. The song was supposed to have been performed by the artist Sjonni Brink, who also composed it. Sadly, Sjonni died just a few weeks before the national contest. Instead six of Sjonni's closest friends got together and formed a band so they could compete with the song in his place, with the approval of Sjonni's family. To honor him they even named the band Sjonni's Friends.
They only finished in 20th place, but it's still a good song. The name of the song is Coming Home

I knew 2 years prior in 1986 Switzerland is about to win something big, it had also an amazing Canadian singer and a beautiful song called "Pas Pour Moi " by Daniela Simmons I think check it out too but I knew it's coming for Switzerland to win and then 2 years later I think same composer wins with Celine, I wish she sang it in her concerts cause I know she can KILL it if she does it now.....LOVE it!!!

You have GOT 2 react to osrael's entry for the 1983 esc!
Ofra Haza with the song "Hai" (or Khai - means "alive" in hebrew).
One of the BEST voices in the world!
She later had 2 intl hits (based on Yemen traditional folk songs (eem nin'alu - if were locked and "galbi" - my heart).
Early 90's she has died of aids.
Her voice can be described as chimes.
Her voice was also featured on the animation movie "Prince of Egypt ("deliver us") and even based moses' sister's image on her facial features.

Interesting fact: she won just by 1 point (137 Switzerland, 136 Yugoslavia).
    So i made some digin...
She was well known in many countries like Canada (obviously) and France before ESC, she had like 7 albums. But after winning ESC she had a world tour, she made her first album in English in 1990 and for the first time made to american pop charts. Also her future husband kissed her for the first time shortly after finals of ESC (and they stayed together untill his death in 2016) and Celine herself admitted it was a breakthrough in their relationship.
We cannot be sure of what would happened, because Celine is amazing singer, but who knows, maybe without that 1-2 points she might never become the huge Star she is today and possibly her husband wouldnt get cocky enough to kiss her to make that breakthrough.
it's a small funny fact to know about. But its more crazy the more you think about it.

Anna Bergendahl is the only Swedish singer to not reach the final in ESC since the competition started. I voted for her in Sweden though and liked her song. I mean, it wasn't that bad. Malena Ernmans Is Voix is a crazy ESC song though.

Great reaction Jake! But if you're gonna react to the old winners can you start from the beginning in 1956 and watch them in chronological order? Watching them that way is an amazing experience because you can really see how the contest and music in general have evolved over the last 63 years.
