  • In 1972, On 25 October, Eddy Merckx set the Hour Record, after a great season: he started the year winning "la primavera", Milan-San Remo, the first classic of the cycling season. He then won Liège-Bastogne-Liège, one of the five "monuments", the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France (both general classification and points classification), and another monument, Giro di Lombardia (currently "Il Lombardia") as well as many other races.
    Then he attacked the Hour Record.

    I was there as a 10 year old,,,( just another race) as time when on and grew up I realized the importance of the race. Now 60 I’m still riding and always remembering the day I was bitten by the bicycle bug..long live Eduardo Merckx and Ernesto Colnago…

    At 0:25 is Ernesto Colnago who grabs his hand to help him stop. Colnago built the bike for him, it weighed simething like 5.5kgs

    An amazing result, not least that it's an open air velodrome, so the air is not as still, the equipment is 50 years ago as was the training and diet. Just below 50km/h, what would a modern 'Eddy' produce today?

      @Enigma71559 2 года назад +2

      Well, Filippo Ganna is the guy many think has the best shot at breaking the current hour record. And he's nowhere close to the complete cyclist Merckx was. He's a TT specialist. I don't think there is a "modern day Eddy." And don't say Pogacar. Get back to me in a few years on him.

      Don't be a nostalgic fool. This era was the wild west in terms of PED use/experimentation. There's no way to know how much of this was Eddy and how much was Eddy's Doctors. A modern Eddy would likely get caught/banned/shamed etc.

    It was Ole Ritter who "invented" Mexico City as a record track. Also for PR reasons. Ritter's record ride was the day before the opening of the Mexico Olympics. Plenty of journalists from all over the world. I wonder how Ritter and Merckx would have made it on a lowland track similar to the one used by Ferdinand Bracke.

    No mention of the steroids he was famous for in the upper echelon's of the cycling community. I was on a steroid for a couple if weeks for a health condition and in bad shape but flew like an eagle up the mountain 8miles.

    What record did he beat? On March 5, 1939, Faure rode 50.537 kilometers in one hour, much faster than him, and not in Mexico

      Faure pedaled a streamlined Velocar, not a bicycle. Please follow the sport, understand its records, or simply do the required eight seconds of research.

    Merckx rode so fast because they had the Mariachi Band play while he rode and he wanted to get away from the noise.... Moser NEVER beat Merckx in a time trail... but he took the hour record... through blood doping and a stupid bike. No honor.
