If you push both sides together (rather than the "cross-country skiing method") the ram extends even faster (they combine). Much easier. Put a mark (tape) on the main bar to indicate where the ram needs to start, and you only need to retract it to that point. Works on green or dry logs, and it will take 12-inchers easily. really does a great job, and easy on old shoulder joints and backs! Quiet and actually fun!
I use mine to split up to 25 inchers in half, then I can pick them up and put on my 5 ton electric! at 74 years old, I am more interested in saving my back than the speed I split at!
I've had mine for about 5 years, it's been great. I started to wear a safety shield because a lot of pressure can be built up and something could break and fly off. There is another you tube showing how to bleed and add fluid if you need to. I bought mine at Harbor when they were 100 dollars the price has gone up.
I bought one a few years back. I use it on the crotch pieces and burls the ax wont get through. Its worth it I also put 10" wheels on it so that it can be easily pulled through the yard
I got a 6 ton electric splitter and it is so hard to work having to use both hands to get the ram to even move. It won't split very big logs either so I got this baby hoping my job will be much easier. The reviews are great which is why I purchased it. Waiting for weather here to clear up so I can see if it will crack my big wild cherry stumps that my electric one couldn't.
I ended up breaking the wedge off trying a big knotty log and had to scrap it. It worked before breaking but was a lot of slow, hard work. I ordered a 7 ton gas powered one from Champion like I should have done from the start. Can't beat the power and ease of gas!
my suggestion......when starting, use one or two 4X4 pieces at right angle as spacers so you do not have to ski for so long to reach the splitting point. Otherwise good job!
Would this be better than electric? My use for this would be to basically split bigger pieces thats already split to be used for firewood for my offset smoker, i would probably steer clear of bigger rounds unless I have to 👍🏽please let me know your opinion on this matter 👍🏽💯
This thing is fine for small volumes of wood fairly regularly. If you were heating your entire house with wood all winter a powered one would be the way to go :).
I find mine easier to transport using a dolly. Then I keep it on there to split, or take it off depending on ground moisture. If you keep it on there, not as much bending is needed so you can save the knees and back.
You did a ton of work even before it made contact with the log. Surely at some point it occurred to you that you could have saved all that work with a spacer block??
You definitely need to fill and bleed your hydraulic system. You’ll get much longer strokes. And my apologies if 50 other people have already said this in the comments. 👍🏽
You could have split that dry wood with one whack with a maul. BTW you're are not supposed to pump both levers like you're on the elliptical at the gym.
I got to give you credit if you’re happy with that God bless you vote one just too much back-and-forth back-and-forth paid another 180 bucks got the electric one does the job much easier much quicker you’re done and that’s it trust me you’ll be happy you did unless you already did my next one will be a guess 20 ton
I have an electric 5 ton from HF and it works great, but being 73 years old, my back does not like lifting larger rounds to get to my electric, its on a stand. So I used this 10 ton selectively, to either halve or quarter large rounds, then finish them out on the electric, easy peasy on the old back!

@@dougm1985 Meh. Doesn't do me any good when I'm off grid or snagging "free" firewood logs (that I need to split to reasonable size for loading), from a neighbor that doesn't want me rolling a gas log splitter over their property.
I just bought one and it’s a really good splitting machine. Very easy to use. Thanks for the video
Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for the comment!
Excellent DIY video. And, what a great tool!
I’m with ya. Beats the heck out of going all manual labor with that axe.
Thank you sir!
"This Jack hasn't even had to break a sweat yet." Jack immediately protests. 😆
Bahahahahaha

Until we have contact. Hmm, why wouldn’t you put a block of wood in there to reduce the number of strokes?
Yes a spacer for shorter logs
For sure! Apparently i like to work way harder than I should. Thanks for commenting!

Thanks for the contribution! Safety shield is a great idea. I love the sound the logs make when they pop

@ignoranceisnotatrend4669 very cool. A splitter axe might take up less space too if you like that kind of thing. Thanks for watching!
@@mattfixesall9000 man I don't even want to swing a axe ,unless it's wood that will split on the first swing 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄
Yeah. Axe chopping is therapeutic and miserable at the same time. Sometimes miserable for days after :)

Right now I'll take anything other than using a ax, kindling cracker, and splitting maul 😂

Yeah. Lol no doubt! Apparently I was prepping for some sort of cross country event 😂

Hey brother, how does it do with logs that are still a little wet inside and not entirely seasoned?
It splits them for me.
Awesome! Thanks man!
@@mattfixesall9000 also is 18inches max length?
So would that work on hard woods? Wet ? Or does it have to be dry?
I have done it with wet logs, they didn’t crack apart as nicely. I haven’t run any hardwoods through it.
@@mattfixesall9000 I am looking for something that would do wet and dry hard woods like oak and sweet gum. But need to handle like 18 inches diameter
Looks like a Aerobic course .
Full body workout 😂
@@mattfixesall9000 he hee yep
You'd get alot more throw in the ram/cylinder if you bled the air out of the hydrolics...
put 2 wheels on so can move it easy also 2 small strip s of steel will hold lg. on mach.
Nice. I love the Ingenuity!
What's the approximate weight of the splitter?
Good question. It’s heavy enough that I hate lugging it around. Prob between 50 and 75lbs if I had to guess. I could be way off.
80 lbs. for the splitter.
Thanks James!
Get a 4X4 or 4X6 block for a spacer and save yourself some time and pumpimg.

You're not supposed to ski with it! One arm is speed, one arm is power for large rounds.

I guess the wood have to be dry for it to work
Blue Sky yeah definitely dry :)
No , I've split green wood as well as dried.

To much arm work. Do a face cord and at the end, you better get a drink or a joint and relax and crash. I am old and not ready to kill myself, lol
