Add Wheels to the Harbor Freight Manual Log Splitter by

  • Out of the box, the Harbor Freight Manual Log Splitter works as advertised, but has inadequate wheels. It's difficult to move around, especially in dirt, mud, and grass. I fixed this issues by adding a much larger set of wheels, also from Harbor Freight.

    I just did this thanks to your video. I used two 5/8 bolts that fit the tires, and drilled the original holes to fit the bolts. Wonderful hack. Thanks for the inspiration!
    I'll add something later to the other end of the splitter to make it level, but for now resting it on an appropriate sized block of wood does the trick for use of the splitter.

    I did this to a HF log splitter, but used long bolts which fit into the existing holes, and then added a spacer to make the diameter large enough to fit the wheels. No drilling needed. No modification of the log splitter. Much easier, and cheaper, but not as strong, but strong enough I think. Easy to go back to the small wheels if desired.

    Add wheels using 1/2"X3" hex bolts and washers. Now able to move it easier cross the lawn without it tipping over.

    I rented a cellulose blower yesterday that had those tiny wheels. What a pain. Nice job adding the lift kit to your log splitter!

    Just put a set of 6" wheels on mine and what a difference! As another commenter mentioned, I had to cut out a small portion of a brace to get the axle to pass all the way through. It is on a bit of an angle when I stand it on end but it is still stable. Thanks for the great tutorial!

    I bought one, did mine with a piece of all thread, nuts and washers and was thinking I was the only one to figure out a way to put decent wheels n tires on it. Was looking for something else and "BAM" you have a video fixing a major issue these have. My next mod is a handle system so when laid down it sits level with the new larger tires and a removable tongue so I can hook it to my rider mower or ATV. Hard to drag this around and use a cane to walk with.

    • @empoweryou1
      @empoweryou1 3 года назад

      I thought the same thing. With the oversized tires, It wouldn't sit level. But an oversized handle would double as an leveling system. Great hack all around!

      I did the same thing with all thread, I also added a small piece of chain with quick links to the existing handle so I can hook to tow hitch on 4 wheeler. I love this splitter!

    I just did the same to my HF log splitter after watching your video, thanks for the great tip! On mine there was a brace between the wheels that blocked the axel so I had to notch it with an angle grinder.

  • @juanitaritty7086

    Small lawn mower wheels will replace the existing wheels with no cutting or changes to existing holes in the splitter. Of course the wheels go outside the splitter. They also make the splitter rock solid when using the tool, no rocking when splitting the log. When a log is split enough the two handles can be used to pry the log apart instead of continuing to pump the handles. A lopper can be used to cut wood that does not want to separate. Ten ton log manual splitter. Also use a metal spacer for short logs if you can find one. I use a short I beam.

    Great improvement on the splitter. Those small original wheels are only good on solid surfaces like concrete. And how often do you chop wood on the DRIVEWAY ? ? ? Thanks for the info on the centering drill guide. J K

    Can you list the parts you used and where you found them? This video is exactly what I was looking for. This looks to be the ideal fix for this very useful tool by Harbor Freight and the others like it. Thanks.

  • @empoweryou1

    Great hack! My first thought was ok now it won't lay level when it's on the ground. But who cares, it should still junction just fine. I'll do it to mine at some point. I will probably change the axle location so it will still store upright, or keep the same axle location and weld a little kickstand on it if needed. Also might go for non-pneumatic solid tires instead. Maybe some old oversized push mower wheels just to keep it cheap and low maintenance. Thanks for the vid!

      All your doing is putting a simple axle through the existing holes and putting the wheels on the end, if you know how to split wood you should be able to do this

    Nice idea, but I wouldn't waste my time with it. I picked one up from a neighbor who never got it working. I did by adding hydraulic oil. The seals leak on many and they just don't last long. It's a harbor freight product so don't expect it to last long

  • @Phiyedough

    I have this same splitter but it lives in a barn so does not need to be moved far. I do have a problem though and I don't know how to fix it. It started leaking hydraulic oil due to a worn O ring on the left hand pump. I fitted a new O ring which fixed the leak but the pump is no longer advancing the ram properly. It advances when you pull the lever but the ram goes back to where it was on the return stroke. I think it must be a ball valve not seating properly but I don't know which one.

    • @GettinJunkDone
      @GettinJunkDone  2 года назад +1

      Sounds like there might be some air in the system. Not sure, but that is the first thing that comes to mind. Kind of like mushy brakes that need to be bled.

    • @Phiyedough
      @Phiyedough 2 года назад

      @@GettinJunkDone I did try the bleeding method given in the instructions and another method I saw on RUclips but it made no difference. I also changed the hydraulic oil but that made no difference. I checked the ball valve under the pump itself but I think that is just for when you are drawing oil from the reservoir into the pump. I think the one giving trouble is under the ram cylinder.

    How does it work when splitting? Does it roll away? I’ve considered doing this to mine but I decided not to because the wheels from the factory allowed the splitter to sit flat while in use, but those wheels would seem to elevate it and the bottom of the Splitter wouldn’t touch the ground.
