What else could we become if God is our Father and we are His offspring as noted in the New Testament? As a Roman Catholic and Evangelical Christian, we were taught that the spirit essence (which fills the universe and is smaller than the head of a pin) is called father because that unembodied, diffuse, spirit essence created everything from nothing (as per Aristotle). I am grateful for the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ where we accept the New Testament scriptures for what they say rather than viewing scripture through a Platonic/Neo-Platonic lens.
I’m actually taking a different path from LDS to simply following Jesus and am deconstructing teachings of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young and others who were heavily influenced by Freemasonry. My view shifted from believing I was a son of God in the LDS sense to an adopted child of God, His creation and image bearer, and Jesus is NOT created and Jesus from everlasting to everlasting with the Father), and there are no other Gods and will not be any other God as the scriptures said in Isaiah 43:10 and John 1:1. The first sin was for His creation to try to become like God. That was Lucifer’s fall. It was Adam and Eve’s sin. It was the reason for the Tower of Babel to fall and languages to be confounded. The Book of Mormon I believe is Christian fan fiction but holds to the essence of who Jesus is much closer than what Joseph and Brigham taught adding in D&C 132 and polygamy in heaven.
@@MrMarcand100 Sorry you can't accept the plain language of scripture. The One (or totally Other) from Plato, when wedded to the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost at Nicea creates the confusion. Nothing can be like the totally other. You have obviously missed the scriptures like in 1 John and joint heirs of Paul in scripture noted we will be as Christ is and have all that he has. Satan's problem was that he wanted the Father's glory but sought to take away the agency of man which is not being like God. You should read the scriptures and early Christian history on all of these topics. They show a very different picture that the antichrist toilet water you have been drinking. Also, Jesus as a created being from nothing is from Arianism, not the Church of Jesus Christ. Your "heavily influenced by freemasonry" for its doctrine is obviously from the antichrist literature, as that is very telling in its ignorance of both the Church of Jesus Christ and freemasonry. While Joseph couched the endowment in the pedagogy of freemasonry, the content is very different. Bradshaw has a very good book on the topic should you care to read real research on the subject.
@@MrMarcand100in my experience, when people start to fall away from from the church and blame it on our doctrine, they’re really just looking for an excuse to leave anyways. Maybe to experience more “freedom” which is what they think they need. Hopefully you’ll see that our amazing doctrine is exactly what you’re searching for all along. It’s all there in front of us if you don’t hold on to sometimes acquired faulty beliefs or misinformation that we grew up with. Prey and study and you’ll see the true light. Good luck😊

Making God and His children of different categories in an attempt to elevate God above all comprehension I’m seeing now as a major stumbling block for most Christians. Eastern Orthodoxy, though they have many differing beliefs to our church, at least agree that mankind is capable of actually growing into the same nature that God has. I believe a transcendental God who we cannot ever hope to approach in shared glory as His children is a lower concept of divinity than what Catholics and Protestants conceive in thought. I’m grateful for the restored gospel that teaches plain and simple truths.
Ben, I always love your podcasts but Andrew C. Skinner is one of my favorite LDS scholars. This interview was just fantastic. Thanks for all you do. BTW, what was the poem that the couplet "As man is, God once was. As God is man may become" comes from? thanks again
Thou, thee, thy/thine were once familiar pronouns in English as well, cognate with du, dig, din/dit in Danish, for example. Their connotation has been changed to imply distance between us and God. Certainly, the gulf between the Divine and the human is unfathomable, spanned by the atonement of Jesus Christ. The goal is to cross that bridge in order to become close to -- even at one with -- God. Jesus used the imagery of marriage, He the bridegroom and we His brides, to suggest the intimacy we are supposed to have with Him. Thou, thee, thy/thine are pronouns of intimacy, not distance.
In a relatively similar way to us, through a sacramental process helped by ascetic practices, I think the main difference is the mysticism of Greek orthodoxy

What, how does Greek Orthodox theology describe how to obtain theosis? Thank you
