It can definitely be parenting. It can also be the kids themselves. Yes. Really. The reality of how personalities are formed and why people do what they do is complex, and is neither just genes nor just environment. There is a tendency to think everyone is 'born innocent' but that isn't true. Check out kids as soon as they start to crawl - they all have distinct temperaments, levels of aggression, levels of fear, greed, empathy, curiosity etc. I'm not saying that it is all fixed, it can certainly be tweaked, but even so, baseline character traits do not disappear. Severe psychopathy is not created, and even great, loving parents with lots of time won't be able to do much more than just ameliorate that.
I always hated country, but after a few years going to bluegrass jams and revisiting the classics I've come to love a lot of country music. But then I spent a day at the pool where they were playing pop country and it was just as bad as I ever thought it was. They've leaned so hard into the stereotypes that they have become next-level self-parody.
As a black guy who considers himself all about as much freedom as you can stand, I fear that some people go too far with defending women at all costs. I lost everything I had because my white wife was abused (by essentially a family member as a child) but chose not to deal with it. Her family didn't like the stigma, I guess. All members are multi-millionaires. She went along, to get along, and for thirty years I'd have just as well have been dead. My son is saying he's black but never knows anything about black people. He's been never allowed to know any of his black family since the age of 3. Whereas I was left to die along with my own family that counted on me to help them. Maybe this sort of thing doesn't happen to black men in Canada, but I kinda doubt it. We must be careful to understand that women are as many in number as men. Just on the sheer basis of statistics, there are bound to be among these numbers those who are outright killers, and maybe because they truly couldn't give a damn about men and boys (n secret). We all need to do women the favor of allowing for some of them to be Evil and just as ruthless, and violent, in their own way, as men. Who knows maybe this take calls for yet another Romantic love song about the angels on Earth that women are. Do you really think that Chris Brown is the Devil? Hahaha. Sorry, but I just had to get this off my chest because it's true.

I got into Nirvana at a young age, was obsessed with them for a bunch of years, got burned out and couldn't stand to hear any of their music for a decade or two, then kind of went back to listening to them but not as obsessively as I used to. Their deeper cuts and obscure recordings are far better than the official and more mainstream stuff. Also, can't tell if you meant the argument, or Video Game Music being "an idiotic concept that belongs in the trash".

I was 13 years old when Nirvana released Nevermind. My circle of friends (in the Georgia/Alabama area) loved them. And now I, more often than not, change the channel when Nirvana comes on. Not sure what happened...maybe my youthful overindulgence caused a bit of burnout.
Nirvana is amazing, if you hear a Nirvana song on the radio then its one of their worst songs.. serve the servants, scentless apprentice, sappy, D7, etc are what most fans actually listen to. Kurts weird chord changes and over all rawness is what was so special as a kid growing up.

Great video 👍🏾. Speaking of getting your music out, I’m signed with a publicist/manager who works with musicians and gets their music in tv, commercials and films. Last year was a little slim of course. But I been averaging about 7k from 2015 a year. They’re a lot of different companies like the one I’m connected to.
I love Nirvana, but I did have a period of 5 years where I had to take a break from them. There are many bands I could say that about, except I eventually came back to Nirvana (other bands…not so much).
I believe the drum sampling things means pre-made recordings slapped into songs, like loops and such. Personally, I'm not a fan of how most sound but as long as more keep coming out I'm ok with it since there's variation in sounds, genres, etc...
3:20 IF you have time and energy and want to change that, there are bluetooth-/USB-connectible radio transmitters that go into the cigarette lighter slot in your car. I have one from Ugreen and it works pretty well once you have it set up. It connects to your phone or other external music player via bluetooth or cable (once its powered by way of the lighter slot) and transmits the audio via radio. You set up the car stereo to receive the frequency and voilá, bluetooth to radio. Costs something between 18 and 30€ in Gmany.
Hey I opened for the Manhattan Transfer one year. It was my first year playing jazz guitar (2.5 years of playing prior) and I somehow got the spot for playing in the rhythm section for the Wyoming All-State jazz choir. I finished my set and my music teacher and I got the fuck out of dodge. We didn’t want to get snowed in but I certainly didn’t want to stick around for their set. I did steal a guitar cable from that gig though
Nirvana unplugged was like my lullaby when I was a little boy, so I always have a soft spot in my heart for them. I wouldn’t play guitar if it wasn’t for them
I have a friend that criticized Nirvana for “just a bunch of chords that don’t work” That’s what makes it work Also I remember that those Mexican strats just needed a bit of fret work and a couple of adjustments and they were as good as a regular strat off the shelf at the music store… for like $3-400 less. They were good guitars
Yooo Sammy G have you heard of the devil makes three? Super awesome guitar work. Its entirely stringed instruments but doesn't feel overbearing and the songs that do have solos are really good. And his voice.. his voice is the epitome of rASpY I love it lmao check them out its mostly bluegrass but theyre newer stuff is more country I guess. Idk it has a full drum section which gives a totally different feel. I forgot but feel like I shouldve prefaced this whole comment with I fucking hate country but love these guys lmao

I used to dock my charter boat next to Jimmy Buffets "Shrimp Boat Sound" recording studio and saw all the country "Legends" pass thru. They all absorbed alot of inspiration from listening to the local talent when taking a break. If its cliche, consider it to be in the next pop country album. So Sad...

i feel like that's 98% of current rock radio and has been for some time. My local station rotates the same "dad rock" bands with the same two/three songs for each band. When i'm not using my bluetooth cassette tape to put on spotify, my radio is always on the classical/jazz station lol
...don't love Nirvana, but you have to admire them for following the ultra-popular, catchy Nevermind with the incredibly abrasive, challenging In Utero, rather than selling out and producing something similar to their huge hit...
Great video, you should think into getting a new radio for your corolla. A new radio that has Aux and Bluetooth comes out around 50 dollars. You don't have to get an expensive brand.

Even if you aren’t a fan of nirvana, you’ve got to admire their ability to make such a successful album as nevermind, and follow it up with a cover EP and one of the heaviest grunge albums out there. They never got addicted to the fame, and they always made the music they wanted to. I’m not a fan of Foo Fighters, but I love how they’ve always make the albums they wanted to make for the same reason. Kurt and Dave have/had real motivation in all the songs they’ve ever made, and that’s great regardless of anyone’s personal taste

I too generally change the station when a Nirvana song comes on. It's nice to feel validated in that. Aldean has one song that ever caught my attention. It's called, "She's Country." It may have been the first time I heard drop-tuned, high-gain guitars in a country track. But, IMHO, Chris Stapleton is what country is supposed to be. Paisely is aight, too. 🤠

I can't listen to Nirvana because I just find it too depressing. It's the combination of the dark, nihilist lyrics and the knowledge that there was no happy ending for Cobain. Their place in music history is assured, and they greatly influenced many artists that I enjoy a whole lot more, it's just not for me.

I'm not the biggest fan of Jason but I like his guitar player. He's good and he does it with a good ol fashion strat a lot of times. I have a question for you Sam. Do you like the blues and if so who are your favorites. Mine are probably SRV, Albert King, of course B.B. King and Joe Satriani( I'm sure I spelled his last name wrong) knows his way around the bends of the blues pretty well. Steve Vai is good at it also but I've never really seen him as a "blues player" if that makes any sense.

Beethoven was a criminal, literally arrested for prowling and vagrency in Vienna. Carlo Gesauldo murdered 2 people. Classical composers have often been just as bad if not worse than many modern musicians.
For financing music, don’t forget Patreon. If you can grow a community there you also will probably do better at selling merch and the fan base can help with promotion. I feel more of a connection to musicians I support and I’m more likely to be a long-term fan.
Maybe try Nirvana’s MTV unplugged if you haven’t before. Great live record IMO and there are many bands that I didn’t like their studio recordings but enjoyed live.
My dream supergroup would be Paul McCartney on bass, Dave Grohl on drums, David Gilmour and Eric Clapton on guitar switching between lead on whatever song.
As far as the music as a full time or side hustle thing: as a dude who works as a session player and keeps a 15-20h a week kitchen job that what I have to compromise as far as making music my main gig is the big thing. I've always wanted to live off music and this may be the closest thing to it I've gotten. I feel like without the part time job it would be a lot more stressful and having a steady albeit small paycheck lets me feel comfortable turning down a gig I'm really not enthused about or working with someone who seems like a prick and keeps me way more stoked on what I do. Obvs everyone's experiences are different but for me I'd only want to do music full time if I felt good about the music I was making. Having to take crappy gigs for the sake of it would probably burn me out of something I hold dear.

I liked the look of the Mexican Strat. Like many guitars the blending is not usually that smooth. That one was Ok. Could do with darker red at the bottom and a bit lighter yellow at the top.
Exactly. The music itself isn't evil, but it has to push boundries and discuss the darker side of life to be relevant and relatable, and interesting. That why grunge is so brilliant and Nirvana so popular. I think that some people just dislike change, and push back against it without looking into it. Its human nature, but a little ignorant.
About the first question: the idea that digitalization has just been nothing but positives for art and entertainment is a very attractive thought to fans of music, because it's brought us so much convenience. Sadly the fact is, it has fucked over people who want to make a living off music pretty badly. Streaming services pay peanuts and nobody buys albums, so unless your name begins with E and ends in Minem, touring is often your only real source of income. On top of that, recording and distributing your music is so easy now that it's become incredibly difficult to stand out from the eight jillion others who also decided to put their music out there.
everyone being able to make music is a good thing for the industry. if you're signed to a big label they will market you harder and it'll be easier to make money, but the point here is that it's not a bad thing there are a lot of people doing it. if you're not standing out it probably means your music is not that good tbh. a lot of factors come into play of course and "quality" of music is not the only thing that matters, but at the end of the day there are a lot of artists that started out with "at home" production.
As someone who will never make money off of their music, I think it's been nothing but positive for at and entertainment. Yes, it means most people will need to find some other way to pay the bills, but is that actually a bad thing? Why is any given person entitled to make a comfortable living with just their music? By definition if you're not making enough to support yourself then your music is not providing "sufficient value" to society, all that has really shifted is that people need to pay you for the art they appreciate rather than the privilege of hearing that art. For the record, I also think the idea of everyone needing to work a full time job in order to be allowed to have food and shelter should be coming to an end with the rise of workplace automation, so that definitely puts the issue into a different context. You shouldn't need to prove your value to society in order to be comfortable in an ideal world. We just don't live in that ideal world yet and realistically I can't see any reason why someone would need to be given everything just because they made art, anyone can (and should) make art and there is nothing stopping you from doing it in your free time.
Digitalization...in terms of recording has been nothing but positives. However, internet distribution devalues all things. Even movies and TV shows fell to this.

Hey Sami G- As a non-fan, I want to defend Manhattan Transfer. There was a moment in time during the 1970s when MT were the only 'band' keeping jazz and pop standards from the 1920s, '30s and 40s alive. An important role IMO.
You want original music in a commercial? Just hire a startup advertising firm for $300 in 1980 with a singer/songwriter for a receptionist. You will get the Thunderbolt Transmission commercial and then air it for $25-$50 on indie UHF stations. Thunderbolt Transmission is an important part of Houston music history.

I haven't played as a job in years. That said, I play, write, record, build, repair, refinish etc. because I have to. Its my passion. Making my peace with not 'making it' was pretty easy. My drive is to play and create. The rest is incidental.

I got into Nirvana at a young age, was obsessed with them for a bunch of years, got burned out and couldn't stand to hear any of their music for a decade or two, then kind of went back to listening to them but not as obsessively as I used to. Their deeper cuts and obscure recordings are far better than the official and more mainstream stuff.

I was 13 years old when Nirvana released Nevermind. My circle of friends (in the Georgia/Alabama area) loved them. And now I, more often than not, change the channel when Nirvana comes on. Not sure what happened...maybe my youthful overindulgence caused a bit of burnout.

Nirvana is amazing, if you hear a Nirvana song on the radio then its one of their worst songs.. serve the servants, scentless apprentice, sappy, D7, etc are what most fans actually listen to. Kurts weird chord changes and over all rawness is what was so special as a kid growing up.

Last year was a little slim of course. But I been averaging about 7k from 2015 a year. They’re a lot of different companies like the one I’m connected to.

I love Nirvana, but I did have a period of 5 years where I had to take a break from them. There are many bands I could say that about, except I eventually came back to Nirvana (other bands…not so much).
I believe the drum sampling things means pre-made recordings slapped into songs, like loops and such.
Personally, I'm not a fan of how most sound but as long as more keep coming out I'm ok with it since there's variation in sounds, genres, etc...

3:20 IF you have time and energy and want to change that, there are bluetooth-/USB-connectible radio transmitters that go into the cigarette lighter slot in your car. I have one from Ugreen and it works pretty well once you have it set up. It connects to your phone or other external music player via bluetooth or cable (once its powered by way of the lighter slot) and transmits the audio via radio. You set up the car stereo to receive the frequency and voilá, bluetooth to radio. Costs something between 18 and 30€ in Gmany.
Hey I opened for the Manhattan Transfer one year. It was my first year playing jazz guitar (2.5 years of playing prior) and I somehow got the spot for playing in the rhythm section for the Wyoming All-State jazz choir. I finished my set and my music teacher and I got the fuck out of dodge. We didn’t want to get snowed in but I certainly didn’t want to stick around for their set. I did steal a guitar cable from that gig though

Yooo Sammy G have you heard of the devil makes three? Super awesome guitar work. Its entirely stringed instruments but doesn't feel overbearing and the songs that do have solos are really good. And his voice.. his voice is the epitome of rASpY I love it lmao check them out its mostly bluegrass but theyre newer stuff is more country I guess. "The evil music of today" is an uneducated assessment of what contemporary music is. There's always been music exploring the darker feelings and happening of people. Also, it was very telling they defaulted to Rap and Pop in their percieved "evil"

My first guess was how some labels (namely bigger ones) treat artists and basically just take a cut without doing much, but then I remember that "rock and roll corrupts the youth" type of people still exist today.

Ha, ha, ha! I'm in a loud, agressive classic rock band in Missoula, Montana and we play *one* country song: Jason Alean's "Take a Little Ride". We rock it up a bit, but yeah, musically it's pretty mindless. That tune defines "cowboy chords" (and uses them all!)

i feel like that's 98% of current rock radio and has been for some time. My local station rotates the same "dad rock" bands with the same two/three songs for each band.

Even if you aren’t a fan of nirvana, you’ve got to admire their ability to make such a successful album as nevermind, and follow it up with a cover EP and one of the heaviest grunge albums out there. They never got addicted to the fame, and they always made the music they wanted to. I’m not a fan of Foo Fighters, but I love how they’ve always make the albums they wanted to make for the same reason. Kurt and Dave have/had real motivation in all the songs they’ve ever made, and that’s great regardless of anyone’s personal taste

I too generally change the station when a Nirvana song comes on. It's nice to feel validated in that. Aldean has one song that ever caught my attention. It's called, "She's Country." It may have been the first time I heard drop-tuned, high-gain guitars in a country track. But, IMHO, Chris Stapleton is what country is supposed to be. Paisely is aight, too. 🤠

I can't listen to Nirvana because I just find it too depressing. It's the combination of the dark, nihilist lyrics and the knowledge that there was no happy ending for Cobain. Their place in music history is assured, and they greatly influenced many artists that I enjoy a whole lot more, it's just not for me.

Do you like the blues and if so who are your favorites. Mine are probably SRV, Albert King, of course B.B. King and Joe Satriani( I'm sure I spelled his last name wrong) knows his way around the bends of the blues pretty well. Steve Vai is good at it also but I've never really seen him as a "blues player" if that makes any sense.

Also sounds like you don't really know classical composers. Beethoven was a criminal, literally arrested for prowling and vagrency in Vienna. Carlo Gesauldo murdered 2 people. Classical composers have often been just as bad if not worse than many modern musicians.
Get one of those tape cassette things that has an aux cable which plugs into anything with a headphone jack. Former 1998 corolla owner.
For financing music, don’t forget Patreon. If you can grow a community there you also will probably do better at selling merch and the fan base can help with promotion. I feel more of a connection to musicians I support and I’m more likely to be a long-term fan.

Maybe try Nirvana’s MTV unplugged if you haven’t before. Great live record IMO and there are many bands that I didn’t like their studio recordings but enjoyed live.

As far as the music as a full time or side hustle thing: as a dude who works as a session player and keeps a 15-20h a week kitchen job that what I have to compromise as far as making music my main gig is the big thing. I've always wanted to live off music and this may be the closest thing to it I've gotten. I feel like without the part time job it would be a lot more stressful and having a steady albeit small paycheck lets me feel comfortable turning down a gig I'm really not enthused about or working with someone who seems like a prick and keeps me way more stoked on what I do. Obvs everyone's experiences are different but for me I'd only want to do music full time if I felt good about the music I was making. Having to take crappy gigs for the sake of it would probably burn me out of something I hold dear.

I liked the look of the Mexican Strat. Like many guitars the blending is not usually that smooth. That one was Ok. Could do with darker red at the bottom and a bit lighter yellow at the top.

Exactly. The music itself isn't evil, but it has to push boundries and discuss the darker side of life to be relevant and relatable, and interesting. That why grunge is so brilliant and Nirvana so popular. I think that some people just dislike change, and push back against it without looking into it. Its human nature, but a little ignorant.
About the first question: the idea that digitalization has just been nothing but positives for art and entertainment is a very attractive thought to fans of music, because it's brought us so much convenience. Sadly the fact is, it has fucked over people who want to make a living off music pretty badly. Streaming services pay peanuts and nobody buys albums, so unless your name begins with E and ends in Minem, touring is often your only real source of income. On top of that, recording and distributing your music is so easy now that it's become incredibly difficult to stand out from the eight jillion others who also decided to put their music out there.
everyone being able to make music is a good thing for the industry. if you're signed to a big label they will market you harder and it'll be easier to make money, but the point here is that it's not a bad thing there are a lot of people doing it.
if you're not standing out it probably means your music is not that good tbh. a lot of factors come into play of course and "quality" of music is not the only thing that matters, but at the end of the day there are a lot of artists that started out with "at home" production.
As someone who will never make money off of their music, I think it's been nothing but positive for at and entertainment. Yes, it means most people will need to find some other way to pay the bills, but is that actually a bad thing? Why is any given person entitled to make a comfortable living with just their music? By definition if you're not making enough to support yourself then your music is not providing "sufficient value" to society, all that has really shifted is that people need to pay you for the art they appreciate rather than the privilege of hearing that art.
For the record, I also think the idea of everyone needing to work a full time job in order to be allowed to have food and shelter should be coming to an end with the rise of workplace automation, so that definitely puts the issue into a different context. You shouldn't need to prove your value to society in order to be comfortable in an ideal world. We just don't live in that ideal world yet and realistically I can't see any reason why someone would need to be given everything just because they made art, anyone can (and should) make art and there is nothing stopping you from doing it in your free time.

I appreciate the good review of the Mexican Fender, I think some great guitars are coming out of Mexico and few people know that. Fewer people know Mexico has a history of quality instruments. I live near the border and have a little experience with it

Hey Sami G- As a non-fan, I want to defend Manhattan Transfer. There was a moment in time during the 1970s when MT were the only 'band' keeping jazz and pop standards from the 1920s, '30s and 40s alive. An important role IMO.

You want original music in a commercial? Just hire a startup advertising firm for $300 in 1980 with a singer/songwriter for a receptionist. You will get the Thunderbolt Transmission commercial and then air it for $25-$50 on indie UHF stations.
