    In Japan at the very least, those exit signs have strobes which will flash if the fire alarm is activated. Some may also talk with a phrase like "Here is an emergency exit, here is an emergency exit." I guess that would make the visibility of the exit sign in smoke less of a problem.

    One problem with red light is that fires tend to also be kinda red. If there is a massive flame in the room and the whole room has a red glow, the red sign might not be a noticable as a green sign.

    I live in Italy, emergency exit signs typically depict a running figure with an arrow, and at the end, a door with the label "uscita di emergenza." However, I've always liked the signs with the word "exit."

    The ISO exit sign was introduced by a Japanese designer in 1979 and went international in 1985. The USSR actually made their own exit sign like the ISO but the man and doorway were reversed. Today, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Middle East, and recently Canada use this sign

    In the country where i live, even though the running man signs are the standard, most of them are what i will call the “extended” running man sign, which say “FIRE EXIT” in addition to having the running man, ive even come across a bilingual sign, with both English and what i can only assume was welsh

    New York City’s high rises use the running man exit sign on their fire floor doors as part of a building code back in 2006, and Boston’s renovated 2017 Government Transit Subway uses this sign too

    Like sure, if people are used to a red big exit sign, a green sign with no text might be confusing at first, but if you look at it objective as if you wouldn't know the other one, it acctually makes more sence, red allways indicates danger so it obviously makes less sence for an exit. Also seeing a red gleam for the exit when ther's fire (also red) seeeee. Real green exit signs also glow stronger in green, so you would see a green gleam in the smoke, but the cheap thing you had, had just a to thick layer of paint on it, where nothing glows throgh.

      Only if the whole sign doesn't light up if you ask me, as according to someone I've talked about exit signs with they're just a blob in smoky conditions (though also if you ask me combination "EXIT"/ISO signs would arguably be best as they'd be the best of both worlds).

    The running man with the word ‘exit’ next to it would make better sense if it were to be adopted. Many facilities in my city in Florida have a running man plaque near the door with the word ‘exit’. It won’t be legible in the dark, but it may create association.

    In the Netherlands we have also exit signs like from ISO-7010 but we have a other form of exit sign called NEN-6088 (NEN-3011) which honestly looks better. And i find symbols better than some linguistic emergency exit signs.

    Fun Fact: I still remember going to a hotel in Fresno about 2 years ago that actually had some (i think; idk i am considering getting into this hobby so i still dk much) photoluminescent ISO exit signs (the running man with the arrow and such) in the bottom parts of the walls in the hallways which kind of caught me by surprise.
    Also I am not going to lie, I always lowkey thought the ISO ones looked cooler when I was a kid. I guess it was just due to the fact that growing up with my autism along with the fact that I was an American who lived in Germany at the time (job reasons for my dad; i don't speak german) noticing them more frequently in areas outside of military communities and such. I guess after seeing this video, I would rather have the US keep the ones they are currently using though, but I do still think that the ISO ones are unique in a way. Maybe a color change and a different way of lighting would do if the US ever had to switch to them.

      UPDATE: I found one of the ones I casually saw when I lived there (ETERNA 4W) on eBay and might purchase it soon. Might as well start a collection, might have to know some of the basics though. (Emergency lights and fire alarms don't really catch me though so I am not collecting those)

    I live in the UK, where Running man Exit signs are the norm. We also have a language neutral type Exit sign that is a leftover from our time in the EU, where a running man silhouette is placed outside a door, usually just a white box, with an arrow in between. There are variations on the ISO signs also, with your exact criticism of there being no ‘Exit’ lettering fixed.

    I prefer the traditional green exit signs from the US. I have a ISO but I don't think we are ready for a change in the USA. Exit signs should stay the same as it with formatting. I think hybrid ISO and Exit signs should be a requirement in places with high amount of multinational people. In my opinion. The ISO signs should be everywhere except Canada,USA, or any other places that don't use ISO. We should start fixing the problem with quality control in the exit sign industry.

    Here in Toronto, they're replacing EXIT signs with the green running man in some places (though the law allows for businesses to use either the EXIT sign or the ISO running man). I much prefer the red EXIT signs, it's what makes Canada and the U.S. unique is it's a North American thing. Not to mention, EXIT is one of those signs (along with "Hello" or "Bye") that you don't need to know English for, it's easy to know what it means like "SORTIE" which is EXIT in French or "SALIDA" which is EXIT in Spanish.

    • @TheCarson116
      @TheCarson116 10 дней назад

      Well said! (though combination "EXIT"/ISO signs would allow North America to keep that distinctiveness while _also_ ensuring that anybody can understand what the sign is saying (not to mention be more in-line with other continents/countries too)

    The Running man exit signs are not good devices! Because when you did the smoke test all I saw was a white light. If there was a Fire and you had the Running man Exit sign you might not get out. Red or Green letter exit signs are the way to go.

    • @TheCarson116
      @TheCarson116 10 дней назад

      There you go, or at least exit signs where the _whole sign_ lights up: having only the text or symbol (or both, which is the best if you ask me!) illuminate helps them stand out, especially in low visibility conditions.

      I initially was thinking that too: "exit" in English, the ISO symbol, & then "exit" in the native language, but now that I think about it maybe either just the first two or with "exit" in the native language replacing "exit" in English would be fine (especially since trying to include all three on an exit sign would make it _quite_ wide).
