- Good Food Bro took a street food journey in South Kolkata to explore a few legendary shops. He first stopped at the Rao's Udipi Home at Lake Market for South Indian delicacies like dosa, idli and filter coffee. Following this, he stopped at 50-year-old Jalpan at Bhawanipore, where the shop specializes in Chole Bhatura. In Bhawanipore, inside Bakul Bagan Lane, lies a 100-year-old sweet shop. Rao's Udupi home is one of the finest South Indian food joints in Kolkata. আমি 20 বছর যাচ্ছি .... ওনাদের Upma আমার মতে Kolkata এ best. Rao saheb বেশ দাপট er সঙ্গে দোকান চালাতেন , but Covid এর সময়ে উনি চলে গিয়েছেন...এখন ওঁর ছেলেরা দুটো restaurant চালায় . এখানকার South Indian Thali, Pongal, Vada etc shob items ভালো . ওঁদের Dosa batter authentic এবং khub ভালো.... কিনে এনে বাড়িতে dosa বানানো যায়. এছাড়া South India থেকে আনা dhup kathiও quality wise বেশ ভালো . আমার মতে Original non AC restaurant এই যাওয়া উচিত.

I love fried idly. It's not common in food outlets. A Mallu friend in school used to bring it in her tiffin. Her mother made it with leftover idlis! It tastes divine with green chutney...never served in food joints with fried idli though.

As far as I remember Prema Vilas restaurant opposite Lake Market was there in 1970. Also Ramakrishna Lunch Home near Charuchandra college. All south Indian.Quality wise Prema Vilas was far ahead. Written without prejudice or malice.
The glass to bowl coffee (or tea) transfer also helps aerate the drink, further enhancing the taste. Always wondered why dosa and coffee are so much more expensive in Kolkata compared to similar places in Bangalore or Chennai?
The aeration you're pointing to is for wine that enhances taste. But in coffee or tea, aeration means the transfer of coffee or tea from glass to bowl maximizes the amount of liquid exposed to the air and will lower the temperature rapidly.

You do not possess enough knowledge about South Indian food. The stuffing is known as palia. Moreover apart masala and sada dosa/dose you have Mysore dosa, set dosa etc. The Chole Bhatura show was excellent though

What do you mean by South Indian food? There are several states having their unique touch in every single dish! Stuffing is known as palia yes you're right,but what is it called in Telugu?
