There's a guy called Tommy Hughes from Ireland Stephen's part of the world. He's in his 60s and Tommy and his son hold a world record for the fastest father son marathon they both ran 2 hrs 30
Ur channel is one of the reasons I got back to running after 8 years. The mental health videos and the “humanistic” style motivates a lot of us. From this disabled veteran I hope you brush off this and come back stronger. Thanks again Steve.
Never commented before but I wanted to say it blows my mind that I can find you so relatable, given what you do and what your goals are. It reminds me that we're all competing against ourselves - our own bodies, minds, and at times our own negativity. Thanks for always being so honest, and I hope the thousands of people who are as grateful as I am for your integrity & courage can somehow propel you to where you want to be.
Don't give up on the Olympic Games. I've already done several marathons, some ultras and your channel and your experience helped me get back to training and improve my training. I just have to thank you. Greetings from Brazil!!
Love the outlook. Was listening to a podcast with Ryan Hall in it a while back and he was saying how western culture really take it personally when they have a bad race whereas say Kenyans are like ‘hey it wasn’t my day’.
Saw you twice on the course, even shouted "Come on, Scully!" Looked strong both times when I saw you. I had my own little break around km 13 when I bonked and had to jog back to the finish line. This video speaks to me on a very personal level. Keep grinding in, you'll kill it at London and get your ticket to Paris.
Stephen I follow most of the RUclipsrs and you by far have inspired me the most. Trust me, it’s bigger than the Olympics. Don’t give up on your dream and keep inspiring us back of the backers!!
Thank you for this Lion! I finished your Marathon Training Program and ran LA Marathon, set a PB on that course after not running since pandemic. Your program really helped, training and especially recovery stuff. Executed race plan well, negative splits. You’re right, you will know more about yourself during a race. I will sign up for another race, make new goals and apply all things I learned ftom Jogging Room! Thanks again and never give up Paris!
You made one point that I totally agree with...I went out at a 61min pace..and I maybe should have gone at 65min... Yes..I personally....and I am not a coach...think you got a bit over excited...I was never an elite runner but my PB is 2hrs 28min....and even with this I always had a lot of friends and family that was cheering me on and always expected more from me...I can imagine the presure thats on you....just keep going mate...you love what you do...now I am 70 and just came back from a 11km run in more than double the pace that I used to run...thats fine. .I love running... Running is part of our DNA mate ....
Dude, you're so inspiring. Often you can speed up by slowing down, and being more intentional in your training. I'm running Boston in a few weeks, and your tips and techniques have been invaluable. Thanks for everything you do!
That really helped me. I’ve been preparing for my most exciting time of running ever (started running age 45 2 years ago). Injury 2 weeks ago. I’m so gutted. But this outlook was so positive for me - thank you
Thank you for continuing to share your experience. I always find it so relatable. In the past few weeks I DNF'd two of my long runs, and they were also in high heat and humidity. Went out trying to train at my usual paces and just fell apart. As a new marathon runner of less than 1.5 years, I tell myself "maybe you're not cut out for this". But your videos serve as a reminder that there's more I could be doing. There's a reason why I find it hard. I've finally gotten in the habit of prehab, and it's done wonders. No injuries since I started doing it, but I'm still not on top of gym work. Until I start doing that, I can't tell myself "you can't do this" because I'm not doing everything I should yet. One piece at a time, and I owe it to your videos for helping keep me straight.
I have used your videos and resources as my motivation to run my first marathon at 38, I am 6 weeks out. You are inspiring, motivating and genuine. Keep grinding, stay focused and love yourself my friend
I started running in June 1977. Your videos help keep me going, because of your brutal honesty. I suffer with depression, and it's a good thing for me to listen to your struggles... you're inspiring.
That’s such a great message. Memory of past successes always plagues me, which I just call hubris. This a wake up call for me and what I want to do this Spring since I’ve skipped the gym the past few weeks.
Well I'm 66yrs old & been running/training/racing for 42yrs. On a come back trail from cancer/Chemo during 2023. Next Ambition is in 20 days time. 56km Two Oceans Ultra Marathon. I am so not ready!! However Scully, you have been such an absolute inspiration to my running. Thank you. I do not believe that your choice was a failed choice. It was a Wisdom choice. Good for you. You listened to your body. Go get that sub 2:08:10, you deserve it.
I really like the idea of being injury free trough strength training. I do about 75km a week distance run 4 times a week. I joined a gym recently and explained I only do gym to supplement my running. One of the exercises was Bulgarian squats 3x 10 each side. Next day I run low impact zone 2. after 9k suddenly my hamstring tears out of nowhere. I guess I learned it’s important to keep it low impact it’s not traditional strength training for building muscles. So now I am out being injured for a few weeks☹ oh well so much for my new year goal to have an injury free running year.
Glad to hear you taking the positives and moving forward man. Regardless of how London goes for you, you’ve built a great community here and we’ll all be supporting you. Sending good vibes your way
Brilliant advice. As a recreational runner who is addicted to running, I can tell you what really helped with my fitness this past 6 months. Races! I was in a bad fitness shape that my first HM in the last season went really bad. But, I registered in a ton of races about once every two weeks and things changed quite a lot. Not only my fitness improved dramatically, but also I became much much more aware of my fitness and how to pace myself. Suddenly, I went from a person who whould always finish with a really bad positive split to someone who kept PRing with a nice negative split in the races. Keep racing Stephen! Good job
Been waiting for this one, love the transparency we all appreciate it, tough day in the office but we all know you've got this, cant wait to see you at the olympics
As a 43 year old Translink 212 bus driver... (And a dreamer as a cyclist @ 23 FTP @ 285W😅) 2004, and I fly passed you in my bus (212) knowing it's you. You've got this social media RUclips down to aT. Have a happy medium and life will fall into place.
Great video! I really enjoy your no nonsense, no flash and hype approach to sharing what you’ve learned to date over a very impressive running career. This content reminds me of that sage wisdom that says that when a person asks for patience, the universe doesn’t give them patience, but presents them with opportunities to learn it.
The great John Wooden defines success as "the peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming." I know your goal is a very specific metric in 2.08 in the marathon, but interpreting Wooden: he would say forget 2.08 and the end result, give the process / remainder of the Olympic cycle your all and once you get to the end, if you know deep down you gave everything - then you can’t fail. Wooden wasn’t 1 of the greatest coaches to live for nothing. Rooting for you Stephen, your my inspiration as always. ❤
Scully, your best results have come from pacing yourself and finishing strong. Don't let ego push you out too fast. Whatever happens, finish. EDIT: Race more. You are scared of the clock get over it. A man like you should be picking up prize money every weekend around the country.
This video is one of your best because this is how we common mortals feel a lot of times. We set too high goals and we fail. And we need to learn how to deal with failure better. Thanks Stephen, all the best, you've got this! 💪
Thanks for this post. Just did this last weekend. Completely psyched myself out of a race midway through. Good to know the elites can have the same issues.
Great outlook and coaching Stephen!!! Been racing marathons & Ironmans for 30 years since hung up the boxing gloves. You’ve been a key voice to help me w my run THANK YOU! Last weekend, I took second in my age group in a regional hilly half marathon. Took two minutes off my time since last year (funny actually won the group last year 😂 & got beat this year). Just wishing you the very best w your training to reach your goal. I’ve got an ambitious goal for Kona in Oct, I’ll keep learning from you. Cheers!!!
Such an outstanding video. I really appreciate you sharing your insights. Seeing how you deal with disappointment constructively and positively is inspiring me in my own running. Thank you! 🙏
Love these videos, the breakdown and analysis of performance and mindset. Very insightful and interesting to My take away from this: Sometimes running to failure in a race isn't a bad thing. As long as you walk away and analyse the 'why', learn something from it and use it to progress the fitness (mentally and physically). Most importantly don't let the dissapointment or shock regress your development towards that goal.
Kudos for making the right decision in a difficult moment. That line between injury and health is so narrow in these final stages. After a couple of Ironman preparations - there is usually one big race for me in a year - I can completely relate to that. That also goes for training. Sometimes it is good to change a training session just based on a feeling that I have not regenerated enough. There is always another session coming up soon (but not with a torn muscle).
OMG.... thats the 25th April Bridge, I was out of training but Lisbon is a great place to be... only just left Lisbon 3 days ago! Wish I could offer advice but everything you've mentioned fits...... and don't keep knocking yourself..... thats 10 miles 48minutes is breathtaking!!!
Yep keep cracking on, keep calm & carry on, thanks for all your inspiring videos, us hobby joggers are lucky to have the opportunity to watch & learn something from your amazing running experiences, awesome good luck Stephen ✅🙏👣🌳👍🏼✌️🥳🏃🏽♀️🌲🏃🏽♂️
I'm back at running after 1year brake, been totally depressiv, laying in bed, gaining 20(!)kg of weight. I completly lost it after several injuries and illnesses, I always fought back to shape, but finally my overpronation got so serious, that I could not run for 2k without pain in the foot (abd I did do 30min feet training 5days a week). I got orthotics, which did not help. At the moment I am building my own orthotics and I modified my old ones. 2 days ago I ran 3k. I already lost 6kg, since I changed from laying in bed to better food and training. You are on acompletly other level, see it as a little dent in your shiney performance. You made me consider running again. Now go and GET THAT MEDAL🥇
Your channel is so great bro! A person with such capacity ad expertice just openining up for mere mortals its just priceless, interesting thought process that can be applied at all levels really. Thank you for sharing.
I was in Lisbon too, I think most of the runners (including other elites) struggled in the second half of the race due to the warm and humid weather. I wouldn't be much worried about that single race, it was actually a very good training session in the heat. Keep up the great work!
Like others have stated, so much appreciation for your videos and your example. I think you ran this half at the right time, found some things out, and you are gonna be right where you need to be for Paris. "You know what you gotta do. Do it. Do it." (Duke from Rocky 4)😀
I've just did a race yesterday in Valencia thought I would defo get a podium but halfway through my legs went, albeit after quiite a lot of elavation, my prep was down to a tee but only I managed to finish 10th so I can only put it down to as you mentioned a race i did a while back and I didn't give my legs the attention they needed. You're an amazing athlete so i think you'll agree with me on that we'll categorise this aa a training session, onto the next one!!
You speak so much sense, pearls of athletic wisdom. Possibly see you at Steeles, oh and my gran says "hope the shoulder is better..." and don't stop the surfing 🌊 😄 soul food.
I get anxious thoughts when racing too. Also in hard sessions when I gotta hit a pace. I'm focusing on "chunking" the session/race so it's not so overwhelming. Also focusing on my technique, breathing. And counting to 10 over and over again.
You learnt something from that run - going off too fast, didn't account for the heat, haven't done enough strength work etc. Learning that and responding to it is as important as if you'd run what you'd aimed for. Better to make mistakes now rather than when it really matters. 👍
I did sport for many years. Competed, got to a decent level. Retired and did nothing for years, probably almost 2 decades. Tried to take up running, did not get my head into it. Had a child, did lots of walking postpartum, started feeling like I could take up running. I found your channel, started running again, paired it with strength exercises and I can now do 1hr without stopping, even if I’m slow. To you, that’s nothing, to me, that’s huge. There’s no way I would have been able to clock a year worth of running had it not been for your outlook in your videos and on strava. No matter what you decide, I will be rooting for you.
Dealing with some tendinopathy in my Achilles and its really made me realise how much i should be doing to maintain and improve not just repair. Weird feeling right now is getting mild pain in the heel and it being a positive because while its not good yet the work I've put it has made the heel and Achilles more responsive and so that pain that was there but i couldn't feel is now something i can feel and work on and with
This may have been exactly what you needed. As my dad would say "It was a blessing in disguise." I'd rather see you deal with the tough moments when you can afford to, than at the Olympics during the moments of your life.
Hey Stephen.. Thanks for the video.. I'm an older runner approaching 50.. I was on my way to being close to the level I think I needed to be to hopefully run 2hr 30 or close to in a marathon in a couple of weeks. This time last week, I had an incredible 25km session with 3x3km in the middle around 3.12-18ish and was feeling alive. Ran about 120km that week and was preparing to start to ease off a little. 5 weeks today until the marathon and I've been hit with a pretty nasty bout of the flu and I have some ongoing respiratory issues as well as light headedness and a few balance issues. Not covid, seen a Dr etc and I'm pretty devastated about it.. Maybe I'll be right, but like the last bit of the title says.. Time To Quit?.. I've pretty much written it off and I'll still enter, but with absolutely no pressure.. Just another chance that will be out of reach and it's quite depressing. I would have done a 15-20km Marathon paced trial today and now I sit here typing this wondering when I'll be even able to run again. Went for a walk yesterday at it was atrocious.. So with this, I'm going through the exact emotions you did as you were on course jogging back to the finish with everyone around yelling at you etc.. It's hard man, I'm not too sure if I can bounce back like I used to.. It's quite possible I'll run as a hobby and to just keep the fitness up now instead of chasing numbers. Had a ripper year last year running some incredible times and also a 70min Half PB in Melbourne. If I stopped tomorrow, I'd be nearly content. Thanks for the video's.. Always the right one pops up at the right time. Best of luck in Paris..
Stephen, my life fell apart in many ways two days before a marathon. Also bit off more than I could chew, and shut it down after 28km. Felt like a total loser taking the metro back to grab my bag. I have a gift but mine pales in comparison to yours. In the end, what is your 80 year-old self going to say to yourself? Mine is gonna say I loved running and I got 28km in and pulled the plug knowing I could run the next day if I wanted. You did the right thing, and the you at 80 isn't gonna care outside of thanking you for taking him on a run.
You might the right decision to stop. We love your channel and the advice you give. The mistakes you made prove your human just like us and that helps us knowing no one is perfect in pacing
Love the content bro .. I have a question .. In the tapering period for a hm or marathon , how do u maintain the same level of mitochondria efficiency when u was already clocking, before from your training block ... Let's say ( going with random values ) maybe 5 or 6 hrs of running
have you ever experimented with doing heavy deadlifts, couple times a week for a few months? like powerlifter style to get max strength.. would make your hamstrings and glutes super strong, and they will probably be able to handle the pounding a little better. just an idea.
Hey Scullion, Your time will come to run Paris Olympics! Stay focused and trust the process. You’re already a winner like you said! Keep up the good work
It is funny sometimes with your what you said is true you’re got the desire is ahead of your preparation. I recently ripped my adductor muscle or whatever working double shift at work sleeping about four hours a night. Haven’t worked out at the gym the morning I got up after I drove an hour to get to this place. I was so tight I couldn’t even do a squat, but what the heck I said it’s I ran a 50 K and about halfway through. I felt my groin hurting well it’s been a month since then I’m still in pain going to get the scan next week but it’s probably be out for months because I couldn’t be patient, get it back keep at it
Sorry it didn't work out in Lisbon Steve. It was a good test though. You had said previously that you wanted 63 and you were on that pace with 3 miles left. Get the training right and see how London goes. You did 2.11 in Dublin and that route looks way tougher than London. You're still an inspiration.
I believe your Dublin solid performance came after some adversity! Maybe this too will lead to another race that’ll get you closer to the Olympics! 🤞👍🏃🏻♂️
Sorry it didnt go your way. Keep your nose to the grindstone and just trust the process. We all have our want to quit days, them tommorow comes and we go again.
Totally understandable, you've been working your ass off. You're a fantastic runner, and I really hope you achieve your goals this year. Keep going, and don't let gym / rehab undermine your good work.
I'm 62 and still running. I'm never going to see a PB again. You're a pup, keep going Scully. Can't wait to see you get that Paris spot.

This is truly inspiring, taking positives from setback is a show of mental toughness
Thank you for all your videos!
Always a pleasure to hear your wise words. Stay strong !
Def one of your best broadcasts ever Stephen. Well done.
I get anxious thoughts when racing too. Also in hard sessions when I gotta hit a pace.
I'm focusing on "chunking" the session/race so it's not so overwhelming. Also focusing on my technique, breathing. And counting to 10 over and over again.
Dude it’s so refreshing to hear this kind of talk. Just what a lot of us needed to hear heading into marathon season. All the best for London 🤝🏻
Thanks for the insight. We all back you to achieve your goal in the marathon.
Very honest video - thank you for sharing. Rooting for you my friend
What ever you do don’t stop making videos! Because they are helpful! Unlike so many other running videos….
Weird feeling right now is getting mild pain in the heel and it being a positive because while its not good yet the work I've put it has made the heel and Achilles more responsive and so that pain that was there but i couldn't feel is now something i can feel and work on and with
Excellent, honest perspective on a race that didn’t go right. 👊
Sounds like you made a good call on pulling up! thanks for sharing. Rock on dude!!
Thanks for discussing this type of experience.
You got this dude! You'll have another amazing race!
I can't wait to see you back soon running marathons
Keep going! Never quit!
Congrats on 100k!
Well done
Haha forgot to mention, lol and like : subscribe
Keep going strong Stephen!
your were running so well as per your pace data....keep going strong man.
Great video as always 👍 I'm training for a marathon and won't a chest strap would you recommend the polar H10 that you us please?
I think you made a smart and wise decision. This is why you are an olympic marathon runner.
Good reflections
Good luck
Inspiring regardless. Keep going mate, you’re awesome
Hey Scullion,
Your time will come to run Paris Olympics!
I felt my groin hurting well it’s been a month since then I’m still in pain going to get the scan next week but it’s probably be out for months because I couldn’t be patient, get it back keep at it
Pure honest post mate. Olympics LFG you got it
So much wisdom here! ☺️
Excellent video and commentary!
London WILL be fantastic! 🤞🏃🏻♂️🤞
Discretion is the better part of valor as they say. A wise choice to save the body for the next one. Go get it!
Keep running, no need to chase Record. Enjoy the healthy lifestyle. Most people didn't take good care of body health. ❤❤❤
Man please please don't give up….
Just think Dublin wasn't long ago. you have this.
Winners never quit and quitters never win.
Keep it up and man I know you’ll fuckin* qualify for the Paris Olympics. Good luck. 🍀
Serious question here; why on earth have u not been doing your gym and your rehab? That's the very basics for an elite athlete, no?
Yeah. Lots of double threshold days, and more miles. Double run everyday, and prioritised the running, but you’re right my friend
Totally understandable, you've been working your ass off. You're a fantastic runner, and I really hope you achieve your goals this year. Keep going, and don't let gym / rehab undermine your good work.
Great Video 👌

You heard it here first
Have you officially announced you're running London then?
I believe it shows create discipline to know your body so well and stop before you damage yourself. Bring on the olympics
Such a hero
The bigger picture is always the right decision
