    Instead of using a brush, I use an applicator pad which is very similar to finishing, de-nibbing pad. There is no risk of over-applying.

    Hi, great video. The osmo site has a roller application video and it doesn't mention wiping off excess. They say to leave it because it adds protection but this video suggests you wipe off the excess. Which is correct? 3 days after my second roll coat I kind of agree with you, it feels squeaky but not tacky. Just curious.

    • @WoodFinishesDirect
      @WoodFinishesDirect  Месяц назад

      Hi, thank you! We would always encourage wiping off the excess with a lint free cloth. If too much product settles on the surface it could mark with contact and be tacky to touch. A roller does tend to put a fair amount on also, so more reason to wipe off excess. If its not tacky I would not worry too much! I hope the project goes well and if you need any further assistance please give us a call on 01303 477555

    • @WoodFinishesDirect
      @WoodFinishesDirect  Месяц назад

      Apologies for the delay in replying.
      You need to be very careful with veneers as oils can soften the glue that holds the veneers on and can delaminate them. It really comes down to the thickness of the veneers and the type of glue used. If you have an off cut, ideally you should do a test area. If the veneers don't delaminate during the drying time then they will be fine.
      And yes, you will need to lightly sand to open the grain.

    • @WoodFinishesDirect
      @WoodFinishesDirect  Месяц назад

      Hi, thank you for getting in touch.
      All Osmo products are designed to soak into the timber. A knotting solution will prevent this so it is not recommended to use any knotting solution with the Osmo products.

    • @WoodFinishesDirect
      @WoodFinishesDirect  3 года назад +1

      Hey Michael,
      Good question, We recommend sanding through the grits up to P120. P400 would close the grain making it hard for the oil to penetrate and may lead to pooling on the surface leaving a sticky tacky feeling.

    Does this finish yellow overtime like polyurethane? Does it need to be reapplied ever?

    • @WoodFinishesDirect
      @WoodFinishesDirect  7 месяцев назад

      Yes it can yellow over time and this is due the the natural oils which it's made from.
      It tends to need a maintenance coat every 1-2 years depending on a few things such as how heavily trafficked the area is or if water is left on the surface for a long period of time. However, oil is one of the easiest products to maintain. As long as the surface of the wood is still in good condition, no sanding back will be required. Clear any dust, dirt and debris from the surface and simply apply a thin maintenance coat.

    • @WoodFinishesDirect
      @WoodFinishesDirect  2 года назад

      Osmo products need to be applied onto bare wood so you'll need to remove any existing finishes by sanding first and then give the wood a good wipe down with methylated spirits to degrease. (Do this also about an hour before your chosen Osmo finish is applied). You can take a look at the Osmo Polyx Oil ranges. Osmo Polyx Oil is a clear range with different sheen options that will give the wood a 'wet look' so will darken the wood like water would and will enhance the natural features and woodgrain. Osmo Polyx Oil Raw has been designed for blonde woods and will retain the natural look of the wood and dry to a matt sheen. Osmo Polyx Oil Tints are a range of tinted oil. You'll need to carry out test areas first to ensure you are happy with a finish before you proceed. Osmo sample sachets are available on our website.

    • @WoodFinishesDirect
      @WoodFinishesDirect  3 года назад +1

      Hello Kim Thank you for the question. Osmo Polyx Oil is suitable for kitchen cabinets if the old finish is completely removed. You may have to patch repair along the way due to wear but it is highly resistant to scuff and scratches and does not crack, peel, flake or blister. I would recommend a full re-coat every 2-3 years.

    Late to the game, but I just finished a Chessboard and I was told my someone at my local Woodcraft to use the Aqua Coat Wood Grain Filler, and then apply Osmo Polyx once dried. I have noticed a sticky tacky surface as the finish is drying...do I need to resand back to 120p again or how do I address the sticky tackiness that I'm noticing now? Thanks in advance!

    • @WoodFinishesDirect
      @WoodFinishesDirect  Год назад

      We wouldn't normally recommend a grain filler with Polyx Oil as it hinders the penetration of the oil. This is probably why it is sticky on the surface as 90% of the oil should be inside the grain and only 10% on top. It may also be the species of wood, if the wood is harder and denser than Oak then Osmo would recommend the Wood Wax Finish Extra Thin (1101)instead as this is a thinner oil and designed for denser hardwoods. I would recommend that you sand back to bare wood and refinish.
      Hope that helps!!

    I am wanting to go with a very natural look for a kitchen table so I was going to use 3041. Is it ok to use 3041 on a kitchen table? Is it somewhat heat resistant? I saw that someone recommended putting a coat of 3031 over the 3041 to prevent milkiness. But wouldn’t that darken the wood, thus defeating the purpose of using 3041 in the first place?

      Hey David thank you for your comment I would recommend the Osmo Polyx Oil Raw 3044. • @WoodFinishesDirect
      @WoodFinishesDirect  2 месяца назад

      There would be no need to use a penetrating oil prior to Osmo. There is only so much oil that can fit into wood grain, you may potentially stop the Osmo Polyx oil from sinking in if another oil is used. Osmo polyx oil is best used on bare timber.

      You will require an additional coat of the Osmo Wood Protector on any kitchen or bathroom doors for additional water repellency and this can darken the wood slightly more than the oil alone. You only need apply the wood protector on the interior of the bathroom and kitchen, as it will be on the opposite side of the door the difference in colour will be barely noticeable.

    • @WoodFinishesDirect
      @WoodFinishesDirect  2 года назад

      Thank you for your enquiry. The Osmo Polyx Oil is not suitable for exterior use. For exterior application we would recommend the Osmo UV Protection Oil. This is available in a clear (420) which will enrich the natural colours in the grain and also some light tints that will change the colour of the wood. This product will make the surface of the Pine completely water repellent, nourish the wood to minimise splitting and cracking also offer UV protection up to factor 12. This UV protection delays the greying effect that the UV light has on exterior wood.
      All of the UV oils are available in sample sachets and we always recommend test areas. These samples can be ordered via the Wood Finishes Direct website or please give me a call on 01303 213838 if you would like to order samples over the phone or you require any further technical information.

      As long as they are solid wood, we always advise to give a light sanding to essentially clean the wood of any dirt or other elements the surface might have picked up in manufacture and handling that could affect how the oil covers.

    Hi there, is 240grit to high/smooth as a final sand on a bedroom dresser before applying osmo? Thank you

    • @WoodFinishesDirect
      @WoodFinishesDirect  3 года назад

      Hey Raho,
      Thank you for the question, We recommend sanding through the grits up to P120. P240 would close the grain making it hard for the oil to penetrate and may lead to pooling on the surface.
      Warmest regards,
      Jay

    Do you need to sand even if the starting surface is untreated? Thanks!

    • @WoodFinishesDirect
      @WoodFinishesDirect  3 года назад

      It depends on the wood and the surface, I normally do give it a rub down before starting - its always best to start with the best foundation possible.
      Id try a test area/water test and see how the wood reacts. if it takes a while to absorb, it may need a sand to prep it!
      If you have any other questions dont hesitate to ask, theres no such thing as a silly question.

    What would you recommend for old Victorian pine or oak doors?

      Hi Megaman2016
      If they are stripped back to bare wood, the Osmo Door Oil (bit.ly/door-oil) or the Manns Door Oil (bit.ly/manns-door-oil) or if youd prefer the Manns Door Varnish is fantastic too (bit.ly/door-varnish) we actually released a video last week about this product, you can find it here - ruclips.net/video/7LMoEEd5D2U/видео.html
      Hope that helps!

      Hello Jon Osmo polyx oil is not suitable for exterior use. I would recommend instead the the Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra, its a professional grade, solvent-based, UV-resistant wood oil for exterior wood.

    • @WoodFinishesDirect

      Good Morning Marty, We have found after plenty of test that P120 allows for the perfect finish and opens up the grain enough for the oil to penetrate evenly.
