I don't think using blender is that dumb of an idea, if you're comfortable with it and don't need the tooling a more "traditional" CAD program offers, why bother? Great improvements so far, shaving 30mm off the width is pretty impressive and is going to cascade into (like you said) a lighter armor hoop, but also a lighter top plate and is going to stiffen up the body a ton from simply having less lever action going on over the longer distances.
Considering that it is on that list of improvements I held up at the start, I completely forgot to mention that it would make the robot more stiff. Thanks for pointing that out.
