  • The Canton Police Department reports that a 53-year-old man who was apprehended by two police officers on Thursday after fleeing from a crash died while in custody.
According to a release from the department, officers responded to a report of a one-vehicle crash in the 1700 block of Sherrick Road Southeast on Thursday evening around 8:15 p.m. Officers apparently observed a power pole in the roadway that had been sheared in the accident and found the vehicle nearby.
Canton police say witnesses directed officers to the AMVETS in the 1800 block of Sherrick Road SE, where the driver of the vehicle was reported to have fled. At AMVETS, police report that officers encountered Frank E. Tyson of East Canton. Police officials say that Tyson struggled with the officers, before they were able to secure him in handcuffs.
Shortly after Tyson was taken into custody, Canton police say the officers at the scene noticed that Tyson had become unresponsive. Officials say he was given CPR and "several doses of narcan" before paramedics arrived.
Tyson was taken to Aultman Hospital, where police say he was pronounced dead at approximately 9:18 p.m.
Canton police officials report that the Ohio Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) was immediately contacted and will conduct "an independent investigation of the incident." Meanwhile, the two primary officers on the call, Officers Beau Schoenegge and Camden Burch, assigned to the Traffic Bureau, have been placed on paid administrative leave per department policy.

This man was in no way a "choir boy" and I don't like how the media doesn't say "Mr.Tyson has a lengthy criminal record dating back to the late 80's". I'm looking forward to hearing the toxicology report to see what was in his system that would MAKE HIS HEART STOP after resistance.

So because you have an extensive record that means you aren’t afforded the right to breathe and be safely detained ? I’m not saying someone should be apprehended if they committed a crime. But I have seen plenty of instances where both white men and women (one of which who went to actual police department and let off rounds) was detained safely and with the proper restraints. I wonder what he rap sheet was an what drugs she had taken.

@taylorhaze8651 yep that's exactly WHAT I DIDN'T SAY. The Media is piss poor about full disclosure, it seems like they only wanna blame LE instead of the person or persons who caused the situation in the first place.

@taylorhaze8651 And "safely detained" ??? He could have been safely detained but HE chose to fight and resist, so he set the pace not the Cops.

@@chrisrojice7475 sir please. First… you completely forgot to address my statements on how I’ve seen people your hue fire at officers, and be safely apprehended. So I already know the type of person you are and how you think when it pertains to people of color (specifically black people). Secondly I watch the same video you did. Once he was detained he was laying down of the floor, not resisting anyone. While the officer continued pressing his knee in his neck, while he was struggling to speak that he was unable or breath.

When someone tells you they can’t breathe listen. Yes police are doing their job and yes the criminal should be detained but where does it say let’s just ignore that he can’t breathe he wasn’t a threat he’s in cuffs now . Now the city is gonna be sued.
