They should have admitted very early on that a derailment occurred. It was very fortunate that there were no serious injuries or deaths. But by making things sound like a simple "fault" and not adjusting expectations on the severity of the incident, people were angry over why the train line has to stay closed for days and this only attracted unnecessary pressure on LTA and SMRT.

The smoke is due to the tremendous frictional pull by the heavy load(the train) forcefully into the depot. The power cable is running align along the rail is grossly affected by the frictional heat with no naked fire but only smoke. The harder you pull, greater is the resistant minus 'one wheel' really 'koyak!'

Its not that dangerous normally but it can be in an emergency situation. Just like seatbelts on a plane are not necessary when the seatbelt sign is off until things go wrong. Standing away from the gangway is not necessary until the axle box falls off.
It may not be that necessary but you would really want to avoid it anyways, similar to how people are advised to wear seatbelts all the time in flight regardless of the seatbelt sign.

The Government refuse to accept simple truths. Generals and Colonels run MRT. Part of the top should include qualified/experienced Engineers.

Now, that's not very nice to say when your country has highly regarded as the best public transport in Asia, maybe not as Japan best, but you get the idea. As a Malaysian, I think Singapore has a very good bus and rail integration. I can confirm that if you come to my country and ride our PT for yourself, you'll be grateful to have your country's public transport system. We have decent LRT MRT and Bus service, although not the best and frequencies need to be improved, but we're trying our best.
