    Haha, great video. I fly out of PAMR class D, Anchorage, Alaska. It can be utterly nuts, in part because it's sandwiched between a busy Class C and Elmendorf AFB. Last time I flew I was waiting for my take off clearance and the pattern was hopping. Another airplane reported in-bound full stop. ATC replied "Denied! I'm getting destroyed here!!" Just another day in Anchorage! :D

    A practical application of slow flight and ground reference maneuvers. It's very similar at Bedford, MA (KBED) which can sometimes be an excruciating wait at the hold short line for a departure clearance, sometimes upwards of 15 to 20 minutes paying $6/minute in a rental with an instructor. Why do instructors and students clog up the pattern doing several touch and goes when it's busy?

    • @FlyWithBruno
      @FlyWithBruno  10 месяцев назад

      I guess at some places there aren’t many options for flight training, so they all go/stay at the same pattern. I used to schedule my flight lessons early AM or early evening to try to avoid rush hour, but like you I’ve sat on that hold short line for way too long…

    My son was in the North Practice Area. He then tracked to Deer Park VOR and entered the downwind for RWY 1. They kept extending him further and further, until he ended up right back in the North Practice Area. Another time he was already over Southern State on approach to 32 when they told him to break off and enter the downwind for 19. I heard him acknowledge the instruction, but I could almost hear him thinking: I'm half a mile out and you're switching runways on me?

    • @FlyWithBruno
      @FlyWithBruno  10 месяцев назад

      Haha classic FRG! Once I was coming from the North, called them over the Northport Stacks, joined the pattern and got extend all the way back to the stacks again… 😂

    • @0ffcamberxj
      @0ffcamberxj 10 месяцев назад

      Entering the right downwind for runway 01, which goes south, and ending up in the north practice area doesn't make a lot of sense unless he circumnavigated the globe. If you mean he went to the South practice area/South shore, that's very possible if it was busy. We have 14 flight schools and a ton of private aircraft, we try to accommodate everyone's request as much as feasible... Sometimes that makes the pattern stretch out.
      With regard to the runway change, that's not really unusual if you're in a light GA aircraft and VFR. Switching runways with traffic can be a fun puzzle to solve, and we're often loading the new runway's downwind and/or final while launching the last departures from the old runway. If he was doing touch and goes, it's pretty normal to have aircraft on final for 32 track in until they get close to the field and then they can just turn right to enter the left downwind for 19. It's very efficient. If he was a full stop he may have been broken off to 19 because traffic was already short final or rolling on 19 and if we had to switch, we likely didn't have the wind for LAHSO. There are a few other reasons that could have happened too.
      If you both ever want to come by for a tower tour, reach out.

    • @josephveksenfeld5344
      @josephveksenfeld5344 10 месяцев назад

      Sorry, I was typing too fast and didn't proofread. He was on the left downwind for 19.
      When they broke him off the final to 32, there were three planes holding short; they let them take off on 32 while he led a whole train around up to the Mall.

    • @0ffcamberxj
      @0ffcamberxj 10 месяцев назад

      That makes more sense about the downwind. When 19 is very busy, straight ins become counterproductive very quickly, because the reality is they're often not straight in. The main reporting point from the north is the Northport stacks, which is miles east of the extended centerline of 19. Straight in aircraft will often head directly to the Walt Whitman Mall, which puts them on an angle to a five mile final. When the pattern is busy, this will eventually conflict with aircraft in the left downwind coming from the east or captree. Sometimes we'll instruct aircraft from Northport to "fly westbound to intercept final" in order to mitigate this issue. More often, though, we'll have aircraft fly to the DPK vor, then Belmont lake to enter the left downwind. This merges them with captree traffic at the midfield, and it's generally more effective at preventing conflicts. It also plays nicer with jet/high performance IFR arrivals, since we can delay a base turn instead of having an overtake on final to deal with. Sometimes at the DPK vor we'll have the aircraft follow the LIE for a left base, but if it's busy you're probably getting the whole pattern and yeah, you might extend. Things get pretty interesting when you have a lot of aircraft in the pattern and departures waiting to go. We try to have cancelling touch and goes or having pilots to full stop taxi backs be a last resort.
      With regard to the 32 break off, that sounds like what I thought it was. When we switch runways, we'll usually give departures that already got the the end of the runway the option to depart from there and not taxi to the new runway. Moving the arrivals into the downwind for the new runway allows us to blast those aircraft off quickly, back to back, and get the runway change over. Gotta just rip it off like a band-aid... An extended period with aircraft operating on two runways without the wind for LAHSO isn't fun. The ideal situation is that the last departures from 32 are launched before the first arrival to 19 lands. If your son was in the middle of that, moving him to 19 and turning him over the LIE or closer gets the departures out. If he was doing touch and goes, he would be changing runways on his crosswind turn anyway.

    Nice video! I fly from EFJY, which is where the Finnish Air Force pilot training takes place. Not uncommon having to do a few 360s in a pattern while a few flights of air force planes take off or land. I've also had four air force planes waiting on three separate taxi ways for me to slowly land and taxi off the runway in a slow ultralight airplane (even slower than a Cessna 150, I believe. It has a max cruising speed of 90 knots!) A bit embarrasing, that...

    • @FlyWithBruno

      That's amazing, Patrick! I'd gladly do 10 360s just so I could watch fighter jets landings from that unique perspective haha! And hey, I bet every time a pilot sees a slow 150 landing, they go "well, that was me back in the day...". Or at least I hope they do :)
