Been a ham since 1986. Started with Icoms & still have my 2AT. Thumbwheels were nice, except no ctcss. For the last 5 years, been using a pair of UV5Rs - 1 as a backup. Nice & small, will fit almost anywhere!
You! Yes you! Introduced me to the uv5r. And I absolutely love it!. First thing I did was turn that beautiful roger beep on. And thank you for the 40 menu options video. It was the least boring of all the menu options videos out there🤘
Here's a great reason. No one (not many) use the 1.25 meter bands. You also get the best of what the 2m and the 70cm have to offer, distance and barrier penetration.
I bought mine because it was cheaper than the 2 band version, possibly because Australia doesn't have the 1.25 meter band. Digital TV occupies those frequencies here.
I used to be an account manager for TESSCO on the 2 way radio team. In years of dealing with Motorola and Kenwood dealers selling to public safety--mostly antennas and towers--I never once heard a peep about HAM radio operators. They are so few and far between--mostly DXing or talking to their buddy up the street that they are a complete NON FACTOR when it comes to bandwidth usage. That was 20 years ago. now with cell phones, I can only imagine just how little traffic there is now. No reason why a family can't use these great radios for casual contact....The only reason they attracted regulation in the first place was that they were building 1500W DIY base stations....no one is worried about an 8W handheld.
Randy, I love my baofengs so much I bought one for each of my kids. Sometimes when I eat Chinese food, I get spurious emissions from my behind. Coinsidence, you be the judge. Oh and I'm a General class non sad ham. Keep em coming.
thanks randy, it is because of you that i own 4 Baofeng UV-5Rs and 2 BF-F8HPs and have given as gifts 6 more UV-5Rs to my family in Florida. You can not beat these radios for there versatility and price.
I set up neighbors with these radios. Used for emergency coms and some chat sessions. I've been using the " ham" frequencies for many years with no license. Have had a few " licensed hams " try to contact me while I was on air. They get rather nasty. I laugh and change frequencies. In short, I've never had any legal issues over 30 years.
@@bah5310 i am a licensed ham and the only meetings i know of are net control station meetings….sounds good until you realize that all of the repeaters around you have those weekly, and so the specific repeater is tied up for about 2 hours with old dudes you cant understand. 2:20 - Our local club had an 8-year old pass all three ham radio exams to get the highest level (Amateur Extra). It's easy to memorize answers and pass exams. Dunno if she remembers any of the material. To her credit, she also learned Morse code.
i think that's a good thing. there should be fewer hurdles (and cost) to get into amateur radio. I'd be ok with getting rid of the Tech exam myself and newbies (just) paying a nominal fee to access those frequencies. I'm for more people taking up the hobby.
I have made some ham contacts with my GT5R (the slightly updated version of the UV5R) and none of them knew it was a cheap radio. They just said they could hear me clearly and all was well. Hmmmmm, I like it and I am a happy ham.
Thank you for that great overview. I am old guy, compared to my old 2m/440 Alinco, the Baofeng is other planet good. Hard to beat at this price. Oh, and it does what I need.
A hilarious analogy of "some people"!🤣 My first pair of UV-5R's are a modified or rebranded version sold by Tidradio as the TD UV-5R. I have since purchased more powerful radios, extra-capacity batteries, higher quality antennas, and a few GRMS (GM-5R) radios to share with "some people" in my (very rural) neighborhood. 😊 I am also considering investing in a local repeater. Your previous repeater videos were very helpful - Thanks! 😎
GAAA, that face you put up there, sheesh, I looked down to get another spoonful of my chili, looked up and saw the "sad ham face", about made me spit chili at my screen, Happy Halloween Randy. Actually, those would be cool as masks for Halloween, while communicating with others in the neighborhood on your UV-5R. I love mine as a scanner, which is all I ever use it for anyway. I would be more receptive to paying more for a better quality radio, provided that it was manufactured in the USA, providing economic support for folks here. However, NONE of this equipment is manufactured anywhere but overseas, hence you might as well save some money and go for a UV-5R if all you need is communication. Spending more on another make radio will always be part of the hobby anyway, and to each his/her own. Thanks for the channel and your own valuable time producing it!
I was eating when that face came up. I almost spewed cinnamon toast crunch everywhere. And I love my Baofeng, great little radio. Thanks for the content. 😁
In my group of ham friends we're glad there's radios like the UV5R I helps people who otherwise can't afford or because of the cost might have been discouraged to get there license and get on the air.
I agree, people dont want to put out the funds to figure out if they actually want to put the work in to get their ham ticket if just the equipment is through the roof to get your feet wet. Great to get people into the hobby!
I think it's fantastic that cheap radios exist. Perfect radio to just keep in your vehicle or lend out to people if you need an extra radio. They definitely have their time and place.
Well, I am an amateur extra and I own two UV-5R handhelds. They are great to use with my radio mentoring group at school since they are cheap enough to allow teenage students to bash them about while they learn about radio technology. As far as spurious emissions go, they are not the best, but with prudent use I doubt it will cause a problem. It is my belief that all radio technology has a place and when people use the technology with good manners and generally within their licensed part of the spectrum, it is good for the hobby to have more people involved. We need all the help we can get to keep spectrum from being taken from the amateur bands. I hope this doesn't mark me as a radio poser, but I also own, and occasionally use, a couple of CB radios, and am looking to add GMRS mobile radios to my arsenal of radio transceivers. And, the Baofeng GMRS handheld that was recently reviewed on this RUclips channel looks pretty tempting....
That eye transplant seems to have been successful. Pretty awesome technology that let you choose the vision parameters you wanted for it. Did you notice a transition period to get used to it like I do when I get new glasses? Thanks for uploading that video as well, amazing stuff!
Came here for a Radioddity review and broke down adding a Baofeng to my order. I'm having so much fun re-learning stuff I did when I was 10. The thing is the Baofeng isn't set up out of the box for people who think it is going to be a cell phone.
I am a new ham as of July 2020. The Baofeng does have the issues that others mention but it does allow new hams to figure out what they need without spending a lot of money on something they won't like.
I bought my uv5ra about 9 or so years ago...it is still going strong. It's a great little radio and for around $30, I'm not worried if I break or lose it. My one major complaint...after 9 years of use, some of the printing on the keys is wearing off, lol
After 9 years you don't need printing on the keys. You should see my Dell desktop keyboard. If you are a hunt and peck guy it's useless. If you just know where the keys are, it's perfect
So, did you get to keep your old eye? The new one looks like you've always had it. If there's one thing that I've learned from hams is, how to do a lot of talking about nothing. Similar to politicians. I have my ham license and don't really want to talk to other hams. They bore me and annoy me.
Dude thanks for your great videos about these. I'm getting them to use them to just talk to people I'm with, when camping and out about near my house. you know friends. I can't wait to bump into one of these hand people in real life. Forget annoyed with me cuz I've got one. I'm going to piis them up to no end.
I like this radio even more since you shared that i can use it for other things. Like, weather radio and normal FM radio. Its now second favorite ham radio. I can yuck it up with friends then jam out to tunes in one easy package.
Baofeng makes a the best radio for the dollar in my opinion. Alot of the range has to do purely with your location. I have a line of site to the repeater here on mount diablo in california and I hit it strong with my BF-F8HP. the same sound that high dollar radios do.
I just ordered myself that exact radio. I also just subscribed to your channel to learn how to use my radio once I receive it. Yes your sarcasm seems to me to be extremely funny.
not sure about this but I thought I herd somewhere that when the FCC took one or more frequencies away from the HAM bands, and some of them became bitter (it was either cell phone or FRS/GMRS added channels? a Happy HAM might know) I also hear they became angry when the FCC dropped the need to know Morse code for a Technician license I'm thinking a low priced radio used for communicating by new HAM operators might of been the last straw in the beginnings of a sad HAM's life.
That left eye transplant is looking great. You were very fortunate to survive that. There are punishments the government can do for pretty much everything in life now (they're working on a bill to regulate flatus) - hell its illegal to cross the border but the ratio of those that get away with it vs being caught is almost as astronomical as the ratio of the FCC actually enforcing its laws even when snitches tattletale for them. And yes, I did buy a few of thus UV5Rs to give to my kids and friends for use in an Emergency, for the 'immediate safety of life and/or the immediate protection of property' which is an Authorized Non-Licensed use of the (sad)Ham frequencies... Love your show and that trip you did to Salton C - Blues Clues FTW!!!
I just bought the radio and its handy for radio controlled roads here in canada . The biggest flaw i find with it is the volume . I have to hold the thing rite to my ear to hear people.
They hate it because the realisation of finding out they just spent a small fortune on all the best radio equipment…………..too talk to someone on a $25 radio that can basically talk to a whole bunch of other radio’s on different frequency’s 🤷🏻♂️ I’d be a little pissed off too , but don’t blame the Little UV-5R radio because you was duped into spending all that money 🙁
I bought mine because it was cheap and I don't know if amatuer radio is for me yet. I live in the middle of nowhere so am not picking up much, this has made me learn about RX/TX frequencies and I'm currently planning on building my own antenna. I already added a rats tail, which has made a slight difference. Now I'm looking into building my own dipole and trying that out. It's more for fun at the moment. I am having fun with it too, so guess it was a good 25 quid to spend.
I have 2 Yaesu VX-5s and VX-8. They cost over $300 a pop. Oh, I have also been an Extra for close to 25 years. I have had nothing but problems with all 3 of those name-brand HTs. I have a bunch of UV-5R. One was bad, but the others have worked flawlessly for years and years. I also recommend UV-5R to new hams at test sessions.
I have a GMRS license, from the beginning I went out to buy a radio .. I met the UV-5R demon .. Hahahaha everyone pushed me towards expensive radios, GMRS legal but I tried the forbidden apple (UV-5R), Hmm What radio so versatile .. This is the Radio of the future although many do not want to accept it
Hey Randy, your eye transplant is looking good. You can hardly notice the scarring. That should fade with time so don’t sweat it. It would have been nice if they could have found a donor that was a better color match, but all in all it looks great.
Like you I love my little uv5r too. Here in PR the FCC don't bother to enforce those rules because I press that PTT bottom to connect with my local repeater all the time ( never talk )and also talk on channel 16 (GMRS) all the time. This radios are built like a tank, only wish they make it tuffer for the battery to lock because if you drop the radio on hard surfaces ,that little plastic latch in the battery breaks easy and can't lock the battery in place again.
Ive learned how to fix them all ready and waterproof them to i am so interested in them i got 3 bf radios i like the 10watt bf h6 for $33 and its really 10watts or more.
You are Indubitably one of the coolest guy’s on Utoob,,, Who would send there $200+ radios 1000+ feet up on a drone w/vox on,600+ step to talk 10+ miles❓ Not me❗️ only on Baofengs can this be possible🤣 Luv you Man❗️
My ear-holes truly enjoy this channel. And..... thank you for pointing out... that.... I'm your favorite viewer..... (damnit Randy.. now you got me doing it... LOL)
One time I keyed up my UV-5R and my neighbor's garage door opened, the burglar alarm at the nearby bank went off, the speakers at the McDonald's drivethru caught fire, and a satellite fell out of the sky into my yard. After the FCC's black helicopters and SWAT teams appeared in my driveway 5 minutes later, I was sent off to Guantanamo for 5 years.
I had one Baofeng that had problems with spurious emissions. But there were no hard feelings. I used to have spurious emissions myself sometimes, before I got married.
I like to build antennas. A lot of times I will transmit on a UV5R and I have not heard once someone say, is that a UV5R transmitting. It sound horrible. I always here you sound great. I cannot see a reason to pay $100's of dollars for an HT. I would rather spend that much money for a mobile or an HF radio.
I just got 3 in the plus version for $40 all work perfectly for my simple needs. On both vhf & uhf. I do have a FRS & gmrs license. Ham...? Maybe in time. I always loved the old CB radio. This works much better. I'm still learning repeater tech locally. It's interesting listening to Ham folks. Dungeons & dragon. Radio theory....
I just bought four UV-9Rs a few weeks ago and they work great on the bands I require. They were not the plus ➕ version, that was on purpose since I figured they were old stock sitting in a warehouse. Also it seems like reviews were indicating the plus model was not really any higher wattage than the original.

Been a ham since 1986. Started with Icoms & still have my 2AT. Thumbwheels were nice, except no ctcss. For the last 5 years, been using a pair of UV5Rs - 1 as a backup. Nice & small, will fit almost anywhere!
That left eye replacement is looking good dude. Prayers.
Actually the youngest to get a ham license was 8 years old.
And in my club, a 92 year old lady got her license earlier this year.
Arent we so proud 👍
You! Yes you! Introduced me to the uv5r.
And I absolutely love it!. First thing I did was turn that beautiful roger beep on. And thank you for the 40 menu options video. It was the least boring of all the menu options videos out there🤘
Ah, yes the beloved Roger beep
My UV5R Tri Band is a great radio. Why did I buy a Tri Band? Don't know why but 3 is better than 2 is all I know.
Here's a great reason. No one (not many) use the 1.25 meter bands. You also get the best of what the 2m and the 70cm have to offer, distance and barrier penetration.
I like the tri-band units too. Have a uv-5x3 & uv-5rx3. I put tri-band antennas on them. I discarded the original antennas.
Now that’s funny.
Taco Bell does that to me. The Baofeng hasn't so much
thanks randy, it is because of you that i own 4 Baofeng UV-5Rs and 2 BF-F8HPs and have given as gifts 6 more UV-5Rs to my family in Florida.
Being a ham pirate is where it’s at. Amen
I bet "they" have special meeting just to talk about someone using THEIR airways without going through the ritual. Heads may be exploding.
@@bah5310 i am a licensed ham and the only meetings i know of are net control station meetings….sounds good until you realize that all of the repeaters around you have those weekly, and so the specific repeater is tied up for about 2 hours with old dudes you cant understand. Thats my only problem with ham, but then again they do own those repeaters so i guess its whatever? Cant complain much but damn lol
@@ryanhorn4190 just listened in to one meeting on my new Bawfeng!
@@cynvision Me too last Sunday. Whatta boredom! I painted my wall, I unclogged my toilet, we need a rain badly, etc.
My grouchy neighbor has a pacemaker.
I think I found the perfect birthday gift.
Thanks again for providing the community with such content! I (and obviously "We") appreciate it!
I'm for more people taking up the hobby.
yeah. I think it would be another 52 years for me to learn Morse, so I applied for the GMRS.
Technology amazes me. You now have a wonderful prosthetic eye that has a UV5R chipset built right in. Incredible.
Holy moly Randy! The next time you're putting that glass eye in, try to be more careful. I hope that bruise heals quickly.
I pressed the button on my UV5R and I heard humanity cry out !
My firearms were lost in the boating accident....
My UV5's were involved in a tragic hunting accident!
I just got my first baofeng UV5R because of your videos! Thanks for the help in a new hobby of mine!
Great video. Great sense of humor.
Nothing is wrong with it. Best radio along with Uv82
What I thought was cool about mine was all the stuff I got for under 60 bucks. Im happy with my radios too
That eye transplant seems to have been successful. Pretty awesome technology that let you choose the vision parameters you wanted for it. Did you notice a transition period to get used to it like I do when I get new glasses? Thanks for uploading that video as well, amazing stuff!
Got Mine just now and the pain went away almost in about 3 days. Now I can turn the Heads Up on and off 100% of the time when I want to.
The Doc that did your eye transplant is a master of his trade ! It looks like a very close match to the other . Here's to a speedy recovery !
If they made it illegal, I'd buy 2 more!
I hit a repeater today 67 miles away on my UV5R. So good enough for me. Was told i sounded great and rx was good on my end too.
The eye-translate is looking really good!!
Thanks for the great video.
Dude, that eye transplant is looking good.. I'm assuming there were no real side effects attributed to the surgery?
Love the no nonsense talk! Keep it coming!
Randy, the orbit re-settlement is looking good...

I had a uv5r about 2 years ago I don't think I have it a chance so I just ordered another one and give a good try... Thank you for your videos 😊😊😊
Thank you so much for your insightful videos. You have inspires me to purchase a pair of Boafeng UV-5X radios for myself and spouse.
The eye implant is looking great. Hope you are able to see again. It is healing nicely.
This is the Radio of the future although many do not want to accept it
Dude the eye transplant is looking rock solid glad it went well!
Randy, I bought my fist UV-5R on your affiliate link and I’m so happy I did.
I got my UV-5R and just started my HAM test prep. I went from FRS to GMRS and now HAM.

Hey Randy, your eye transplant is looking good. You can hardly notice the scarring. That should fade with time so don’t sweat it. It would have been nice if they could have found a donor that was a better color match, but all in all it looks great.
"Normal people don't care"... Yup.
I don't know why but it triggered my anxiety when he pushed the button without an antenna.
Then I realized the radio was turned off. lol
Thanks again radio daddy 👨 😘 ❤
Ive learned how to fix them all ready and waterproof them to i am so interested in them i got 3 bf radios i like the 10watt bf h6 for $33 and its really 10watts or more.
You are Indubitably one of the coolest guy’s on Utoob,,, Who would send there $200+ radios 1000+ feet up on a drone w/vox on,600+ step to talk 10+ miles❓
Not me❗️ only on Baofengs can this be possible🤣 Luv you Man❗️
My ear-holes truly enjoy this channel. And..... thank you for pointing out... that.... I'm your favorite viewer.....
(damnit Randy.. now you got me doing it... LOL)
Let's go Baofeng!
haaa
I have my uv5r unlocked and I'm raw dogging it from 125 to 550 mhz . I'm an enemy of the state and public enemy number one
Another entertaining and Hilarious 😂 Video as always Randy @NotaRubicon Productions
That was you? Dang you! Welcome back, btw.
You got off easy. Sometimes they'll just 'disappear' you. Count your blessings!
I had one Baofeng that had problems with spurious emissions. But there were no hard feelings. I used to have spurious emissions myself sometimes, before I got married.
Now its twice a day?
hahahaha!
I’d like to find an old stock UV5R. Bought 2 in September, one was a good one, the other just regular.
I just bought four UV-9Rs a few weeks ago and they work great on the bands I require. They were not the plus ➕ version, that was on purpose since I figured they were old stock sitting in a warehouse. Also it seems like reviews were indicating the plus model was not really any higher wattage than the original.
i have the BTECH version" bf-f8hp". BTECH is a American company that made all the modifications to this radio so it operates cleanly.
