  • Accord: Metabolism for Mental Health is a new metabolic therapies residential program that will educate patients and help them implement the keto diet and other positive lifestyle interventions to treat a wide range of psychiatric conditions, such as bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, and major depression. The program, set to launch in the summer of 2024, will build community, fostering bonds between patients so that they can support one another on their metabolic therapy journeys. The program will be comprehensive and go over keto diet basics, like how to shop, meal prep and order in restaurants, as well as how to integrate other metabolic treatments, such as meditation, exercise, and sleep management, in a way that makes implementation sustainable outside of a controlled setting.
Dr. Matthew Bernstein, a Harvard-trained psychiatrist and the Chief Medical Officer at Ellenhorn, has become a metabolic psychiatry pioneer after seeing incredible patient outcomes. As the Chief Medical Officer of Accord, he is excited to directly impact patients’ lives. Accord plans to track patient data related to metabolic health markers and mental health outcomes. Evidence of how these interventions improve both physical and mental health, are preventative, and ultimately, highly cost-effective, will hopefully change insurance payors' willingness to cover metabolic health residential treatment programs. While Accord is private-pay and, therefore, not accessible to all, the success of programs like this can be instrumental to changing the mental health care system: They build a compelling case for metabolic treatment reimbursement in the future.

I was just talking to my husband this morning about how we wish there was a residential place, like a work ranch, where patients can have keto therapy and be properly tapered from their psych meds. I would give anything to have my son go to such a place.

Dr. Bernstein is such a brilliant psychiatrist. I was fortunate he invited me to speak at the 1st Ellenhorn Metabolic Psychiatry conference to discuss my lived experience with vegan keto for bipolar disorder.
My co-host @MichaelBDotHelp of the new "Our Healing Journey with Metabolic Psychiatry" podcast and I enjoyed Dr. Bernstein's conference presentation about the gut microbiome; we look forward to Dr. Bernstein's being our podcast guest later this year.

Two little secreta: 1) insurance doesn't make money by lowering medical costs, 2) patients pay for all coverage through premiums.

I agree ketogenic diets have great promise in eating disorders. As we first start the program we are trying to be safe so we are not offering it to folks who are significantly underweight (and that may change as we proceed.) Otherwise, we think people with eating disorders would benefit greatly.

I love all the info and hope that metabolic therapy can greatly help serious mental health issues. But most dont have much money, getting professional help with all of this seems more appropriate for the privileged and the poor have to take the risk of diy, which can be very hard considering levels of functionality.

It is frustrating that metabolic psychiatry is still widely inaccessible. We agree that finding care from trained clinicians is challenging, especially for disadvantaged communities. As an organization, we hope to make systemic change so that ketogenic therapy will be widely available in the future. In the meantime, we are providing as many free resources as possible. We also wanted to let you know that, in the next few weeks, we will be releasing a video and article on this topic. Please make sure you have subscribed to our newsletter and channel!

Hey is this normal? I’m in extreme pain. So I started the ketogenic diet with the goal of alleviating my chronic anxiety - I’m in the transitory phase which is marked by a severe unrelenting headache, severe tinnitus, nausea, chronic diarrhea, and abdominal pain. I also smell like acetone / nail polish remover. How long should this last - I still feel severe ocd and anxiety. I am using a lot of b vitamins sodium electrolytes magnesium Creatine and fiber but it isn’t helping

We are so sorry that we can't give individual advice or comment on individual symptoms. But in general, if any change creates severe symptoms, it may not be worth continuing and may be a sign that expert clinical guidance is indicated. It always comes back to individuals consulting with their own healthcare team.
