They didn't bother to mention the main effect people will have with this storm is loss of communications and a slight possibility of losing the power grids.
An LE relative of mine in a major city told me their radios aren't working. My HAM/GMRS radios are just heavy static, they're useless in an emergency.
@@ChrisReparationslul My ham radios work just fine but propagation comes and goes with solar flares. That's normal on any day of the year but the range is cut way down for a day or so during a flare. "radios not working" is lies. It's not an EMP blast that kills the radio and electronics. However, if a repeater tower has no redundancy for power backup, then you would have to use simplex during an outage. No prepper with a ham radio relies on repeaters to function in an emergency. Your LE relative should learn to use simplex if their repeater sucks and has no battery backup. If their radios simply don't work at all, it has nothing to do with this solar storm. Everyone elses work just fine.

@@aarongriffin81 In the carrington event electric power was induced into the long telegraph lines, sparks came out of the ends and set some telegraph houses on fire. What do you think will happen with the high voltage overland lines and the transformers in such a case? It would take years to rebuild the power net. I do not thing such an event is likely to happen, thought. There is the possibility to cut the transformers off the grid and have a black out for a day or so until the event is over. If it gets really bad, it might burn any electronic cards even in cars if they do not stand very deep down in a parking garage. But that might be an event that happens every 100000 years - just as the 9.x earthquake in Japan some years ago.
We all should of been told about this!
@@maryj2671 they're telling u now
I love how much they minimize the Carrington Event. If we lost power world wide the government projects 90% casualties in the first year.
I was just about to comment that! They are more concerned about watching the "pretty lights". FOX is the first station I've seen reporting on the storm, but it doesn't shock me that they are minimizing what could happen. Reminds me how they are NOT on our side, none of them are. Get stocked up for the worst and pray for the best!

Don't forget how dangerous this can be. This level of storm can cause electrical issues as well as enhanced earthquake danger. A little prepping can't hurt.
There is no evidence that supports the claim that coronal mass ejections have an impact on Earth’s seismic activity.

I don’t think they’re allowed to talk about the severity of it. It seems to be unlikely there will be a Carrington event, but the risk is not zero.
@@zalllon I very much agree. From those that suspiciously observe it's placed at 10 to 12%... considering the 6 X class solar flares and my knowledge of space weather, I see that as a reasonable estimate

This event could cost the lives of BILLIONS within 12-36 months.
Think, no power, no telephone, no deliveries, nothing, for of our modern life for generations.
There are six, yes SIX of them coming back to back.
There may also be massive earthquakes and/ volcanic eruptions
I live in central IL. I'm 67. I've seen the aurora twice in my life. Both times were pure red skies to the north. Once I was just out of high school, the other time was the mid 80's. By the time I called my dad to tell him, it was already gone.
It’s started here in New Zealand
What you do is amazing 😊 thank you for sharing with us these beautiful moments
Also the Earth's magnetic field has been weakening. We don't have the protection we had in 1859. Could be worse than the Carrington because of that. Probably not, but it's possible. Be prepared.
There is a little more to be concerned about than the northern lights. This could cause a bunch of problems. Make sure your generator is in working order, and you have fuel for it. Stocking up on supplies might not be a bad idea.
I'm in Dayton Ohio, and you can definitely see the sun spot with the eclipse glasses in the lower right corner. Active time 3:06 pm edt.

Medical Science may not know what causes a common headache, but I know my migraines roll in at about a Kp4-5.
This isn’t a good thing, it means our magnetic field that protects us from radiation is weakening and this is just for starters.

Signs in the suns, men's hearts failing them ..
We had better hope that auroras and high frequency interruptions are all we get from this. Also, it’s not the size of the sunspot that matters, but it’s complexity - there is a categorization scale for that. What is concerning about this event is not that it is X-class flares, but that it is six of them in succession, so that while none of them is powerful in itself, they will have the effect of a long-duration flare, which significantly multiplies the potential for damaging effects, and secondly, that our magnetosphere, which was still robust only twenty years ago, is no longer, meaning that vastly less powerful solar events have increasingly powerful results. This event has the potential to put much of the world into darkness for a good long while, and while that amounts to only a few percentage points of probability, that slight potential is fraught with such immense consequences that it deserves a lot more consideration than “be sure to look at the pretty lights”.
Seeing this now in north Georgia. Absolutely crazy!!
I am not sure enjoyment is the best words to use, if you know what the real result is. Just a wake up!
We honestly don’t know how the Carrington Event played out.
Was it one massive CME or multiple sent our way?
Either way, it will be a very bad time if we get hit as hard again.
Six Xclass flair’s coming our way.
@@benalexander9907 yea and we’ve gotten pink auroras in Arizona with way less the past couple years.

Do you realize our Magnetic field has weakened 25%? Fo you realize there is about a 12% chance of being a Carrington event kill shot?!
