    They didn't bother to mention the main effect people will have with this storm is loss of communications and a slight possibility of losing the power grids.

      An LE relative of mine in a major city told me their radios aren't working. My HAM/GMRS radios are just heavy static, they're useless in an emergency.

    • @aarongriffin81
      @aarongriffin81 12 дней назад +3

      @@ChrisReparationslul My ham radios work just fine but propagation comes and goes with solar flares. That's normal on any day of the year but the range is cut way down for a day or so during a flare. "radios not working" is lies. It's not an EMP blast that kills the radio and electronics. However, if a repeater tower has no redundancy for power backup, then you would have to use simplex during an outage. No prepper with a ham radio relies on repeaters to function in an emergency. Your LE relative should learn to use simplex if their repeater sucks and has no battery backup. If their radios simply don't work at all, it has nothing to do with this solar storm. Everyone elses work just fine.

      @@aarongriffin81 In the carrington event electric power was induced into the long telegraph lines, sparks came out of the ends and set some telegraph houses on fire. What do you think will happen with the high voltage overland lines and the transformers in such a case? It would take years to rebuild the power net. I do not thing such an event is likely to happen, thought. There is the possibility to cut the transformers off the grid and have a black out for a day or so until the event is over. If it gets really bad, it might burn any electronic cards even in cars if they do not stand very deep down in a parking garage. But that might be an event that happens every 100000 years - just as the 9.x earthquake in Japan some years ago.

    We had better hope that auroras and high frequency interruptions are all we get from this. Also, it’s not the size of the sunspot that matters, but it’s complexity - there is a categorization scale for that. What is concerning about this event is not that it is X-class flares, but that it is six of them in succession, so that while none of them is powerful in itself, they will have the effect of a long-duration flare, which significantly multiplies the potential for damaging effects, and secondly, that our magnetosphere, which was still robust only twenty years ago, is no longer, meaning that vastly less powerful solar events have increasingly powerful results. This event has the potential to put much of the world into darkness for a good long while, and while that amounts to only a few percentage points of probability, that slight potential is fraught with such immense consequences that it deserves a lot more consideration than “be sure to look at the pretty lights”.
