The more i hear about this car, the more i fall in love with it. They really have put a LOT of effort and tech into it. ..and.. To me it's the most beautiful hyper car out there. Perhaps partly because i know why it looks as it does, the form following functuion part of the design, but i really like the look of it. Brilliant car. Have watched Chris Harris get totally blown away by it. Always up for another driving video. Get it up there already!:-)
This is more than just a car, this is a beautiful piece of art. You can see how proud he is while he is presenting this car to the world. No other car can be compared to this because every bit of this car is beyond perfect. Even though it produces less horsepower than a Bugatti Veyron, even though it is slower than an Agera R, P1 still has the greatest performance of all time. Amazing
When the McLaren MP4-12C was released and Jeremy Clarkson reviewed it, he liked it but wondered if McLaren knew the meaning of the word "fun". Soon after McLaren launches the P1 and Clarkson called it "A gamechanger, a genuinely new chapter in the history of motoring". So I think someone at McLaren was listening.
A full review is gonna come. Evo makes probably the best car reviews evere- for sure the best magazine (Chris Harris was an evo journalist. Nuff said).
correzzana1992 I beg to differ, I think Evo makes good car videos, I do not think they make the best videos. Chris Harris quit them for a reason, right now I think /DRIVE has the best RUclips content.
I've been on this planet for quite some time now, seen a lot of very impressive super and hypercars, the P1 has the air of something very special about it, a game changer, maybe even the pinnacle of what can be achieved in car engineering. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Audi, and Pagani must be shell shocked. This car resets the bar beyond what was thought possible. I can't wait for their answers.
I can tell you Ferrari's answer already: P1 is number 2. Although P1 is a very good sports car it is a step or 2 below Laferrari. Just like P12 disappeared in the shadow of 458, P1 will also be in the shadow of Laferrari. Mclaren understands efficiency and speed but has no clue when it comes to flare and drama. These are sports cars for the road and not supposed to be race cars for the track. P1 with all the areo and that huge back wing and diffuser looks more like a C-class race car than an elegant sports car for the road. These super cars need a perfect mix of flare, drama and performance. Something only Ferrari masters to perfection. Look how F40 became a legend while Porsche 959 is barely mentioned. Efficiency and speed make people respect some cars (959, P1) but the perfect mix makes people love and remember some cars (F40, 458, Laferrari). I thought Mclaren hade learned the lesson with the failure of P12 but they did the same and went wind tunnel crazy with P1. Maybe next time.
bezor Ta You have no idea what you are talking about. "Just like the McLaren P12 disappeared in the shadow of 458..." Really? I assume you meant to say McLaren MP4-12C, but I guess you don't know anything about McLaren. McLaren P1 is the product of the P12 Project. And who said it's in Ferrari's shadow? Have you even compared MP4-12C sales with 458 Sales? Also, McLaren's been known for their ability to be a great road car when needed, and a fast track car when wanted. They're advanced suspension and active aerodynamics allow them to have a more streamlined appearance. There is one big thing you left out as well. THE FUCKING MCLAREN F1!!!!! You can't even compare any Ferrari to the McLaren F1, it was ages ahead of it's time in technology and design, and it held the record as World's Fastest Production Car for 15 Years. 15 MOTHER FUCKING YEARS. Also, while a Ferrari F40 may sell at around $1,000,000 at Auction, McLaren F1s are fetching around $5,000,000 and one recently sold at Monterrey for $8,000,000. Maybe you should get your facts straight next time.
anthony6151 Sorry, meant 12C not P12. But these numbers and letters are so confussing so you can't hold it against anyone mixing them. As I said Mclaren builds great cars. They are fast and efficient but a bit neutered. Yes F1 was a great car and is very valuable now. But he higher price compared to F40 is simply because there are very few of them while F40 was build in much greater numbers. You should know simple facts like this. Try to get them straight next time. But even F1 fades in comparision to all great Ferraries built through the years. F1 is Mclaren's only great car but there are many great cars from Ferrari. Some go for $20 or $30 million, a number far exceeding F1 prices. I thought Mclaren would learn from the mistake with 12C but not so much. 12c was sometimes even faster than 458 but to no use. It lost in all compressions and the second they parked them next to each other it was always game over. This time they built a wind tunnel racer, P1. Now they try to build a car to stand up against Speciale but not even some Mclaren enthusiasts are buying it. If they want to play in the super car league they should learn it's never just about speed. On this level they should build cars people dream of, just like Ferrari. I know your pride is strong and I'm not trying to be rude to you but fact is fact. Ferrari has been in this for a long time and Mclaren needs to insert some passion in their car manufacturing.
bezor Ta I was correcting you because there was a lot of information that you had left out in your comparison of McLaren and Ferrari and it was clear that there was a bias towards Ferrari in your comment. I'm defending Mclaren, but I don't prefer them over Ferrari. They're both amazing automotive manufacturers but you can't say that one is better than the other. You're looking at it from the wrong perspective. People buy Ferrari's for the flare and passion behind each car. People buy McLaren's for their engineering and advanced performance behind each car. The original question was about how an Automotive manufacturer would respond to a new pinnacle being reached in Automotive by McLaren with the P1. This isn't a question about flare, passion, and other non-observational measurements. If I wanted flare and passion, I'd buy a Pagani Huayra. If I wanted the absolute pinnacle in automotive technology using advanced engineering to set new benchmarks in what a car is capable of, I'd look not further than the McLaren P1. I highly doubt the LaFerrari will be able to achieve what the P1 has achieved, but it's not a bad car either. It looks to be integrate more engineering than Pagani, and more passion than the McLaren P1, so in the hyper-car world, It looks to be aiming to be somewhere in the middle. That's a good thing, but it means that the LaFerrari will not break any new grounds, it will just be a good mix. McLaren has set a new benchmark, and I can only see the Ferrari following behind.
Jesus H Christ that turbine noise in the cabin! Gorgeous! Also noticed a smaller second caliper on the rear, I assume that is for the handbrake, and the other is for hydraulic?
when i first saw the P1 a few months ago, i was disappointed, in fact i thought it was rather ugly. but the more i was looking at the car, the more i liked it, its one of those designs that really grow on you, just like the greatest music does. as of now, i think this is probalby the best looking supercar out there, its one generation ahead of the competition.
The McLaren F1 (1993) is still my one and only true automotive love. It had problems with heat though in non-chilly temperatures as in the British Isles. Several owners of the F1 overheated driving through the deserts after buying the car. Pretty disappointing, heat-wise. Glad to see they learned a lesson not to make a car so particular to a buyer segment that it becomes only driveable in set conditions.
Best performance car in the world right now, absolutely no doubt. The Agera is a bit last-gen but has an awesome internal combustion engine and comparing it to the 918 is just blasphemy. Love the subtle styling cues like the roof vent from the original Mclaren F1.
Clarkson was blown away by the P1. Harris was blown away by the P1. I'm sure the EVO boys will also be blown away by the P1. Seems like another extraordinary piece of kit from McLaren.
I've seen almost every review available on this car online, and only now i noticed something.. if (knock on wood) the engine compartment catches fire or there's a sudden failure, there's no way to access the engine at all! or is there any opening that I'm missing?
I love the rear wing over th laferrari wing. I love how it pitches on acceleration and then on lift off. I have no complaint about this car until we hear the wastegate sound then for me its off putting. but other than that I absolutely adore this car. i wish they engineeree it like the 488 where you dont hear the wastegates. for me it spoils exotic cars as it is usually associated with tuners. So the pagani huarya is the same issue. but still I love the p1. The brakes are phenomenal....The whole engineering of this vehicle, its a masterpiece.
I wonder if the titanium heat-shield underneath the exhaust will get hot enough to get heat anodized. It would be cool if it eventually formed a subtle gradation of bronze, blues, and purples.
I love the design of this car. All the lines, and shapes form such an sleek and amazingly fast looking car even when it's not in motion. Wish I was rich....one can only dream.
Anyone notice the brake ducts surrounding the rear caliper at 6:50? They're no where to be found on any other images on the web. I know many sports cars have under-performing brakes on the track, especially for long durations like this P1 must have been through at Yas, but could it be the P1 also needs custom parts to survive a day at the track?
function is where the beauty of the p1 lies. the only problem is that this car will age badly because it's so based on technology and function. i think that inevitably this car will begin to feel old and lose its beauty with time, something the f1 and other analog sports/super/hypercars won't do... still a superb machine and probably the best digital car ever. can't wait to see the driving video, the ending clip is epic!
I take my hat off to McLaren. They have produced just 2 hypercars for the road (and 2 other supercars for the road) and both set the bar extremely high. Ferrari have their work cut out for them with the LaFerrari if they want to match this. If they do, then it will be epic. The exhaust note of the car seems to sound even better in this video. Yet it still lacks a higher more refined pitch like a Ferrari F12 has. But thats just my taste. If you ask me, the reason supercars of today handle so much better and are much more thrilling to drive than supercars of the 80's, 90's and even the 2010's (apart from the obvious fact that the handling of cars today are computerized) has a lot to do with the ability of supercars to manage the air around them much more effectively than in yester-years. As much thought has gone into managing air flow of supercars today as has been put into Formula 1 racing cars. That and computerized handling combined with hybrid electric / gasoline engines have given hypercars close to Formula 1 performance. This car with its flowing curvacious lines is almost as sexy as a Ferrari 458. That back end is awesome looking! Arent those devices behind the back wheels Flux Capacitators from the "Back to the Future" Delorean LOL
***** On paper the LaFerrari does seem to be better. But I think that if Ferrari are taking so much time perfecting the performance of the LaFerrari, it is because they know McLaren have set the bar very high. This is going to be one epic showdown between two Formula 1 Greats
***** Except for the fact that besides EVO no major automotive magazine has gotten to take a look at the LaFerrari, while the Porsche 918 and the McLaren P1 have been given to most large publications to review. Both McLaren and Porsche have sent their cars around the Nürburgring, and both cars have achieved less than 7:00 minutes, the 918 even set a street-car record of 6:57. Ferrari has done none of this. Remember when Chris Harris wrote about the scandalous way Ferrari let's magazines review their cars (if not, Ferrari always asks the journalist which track they will use, fine tunes their car to this track, and then sends an additional car fine tuned for straight-line speed, so that the review will be as positive as possible), well, I bet those numbers you get from Ferrari are aren't fairly achieved, but achieved using racing tires, optimal wind-direction, and fine-tuned dampers. Ferrari also never sends their cars around major tracks (Spa, 'ring, etc.), while Porsche does and shows off the times they achieved. All in all, Ferrari is scared of being beaten, which is why they do all this bullshit of making their cars do as well as possible, even when it's slightly against the rules. So I bet you, there won't be anything negative about the LaFerrari written anywhere, because every magazine knows, one negative word, and they won't ever see a Ferrari again.
Benedikt Ayrle ALL manufacturers send special cars for testing. What Chris Harris said was, Ferrari cars are so good they don't need to prep them. Porsche said they used ONE month of preparations and testing to set the Ring time. Does it sound like a normal Ring time to you? Is there any neutral organization to check these times and cars? Who knows if the engine mapping, suspension, tires and so on are the same as on normal production cars? Anybody can prepare their car to preform at top on the right season and day and temperature to get the best possible time around the Ring. I think Mclaren finally realized how irrelevant the Ring time really is. Also Ferrari never bothered with Ring time. It's not something they need to do to prove themselves. It's kind of beneath them.
I absolutely disagree, mainly because sending your car around the 'ring is something you're gonna want to set up for. I agree, they probably changed the suspension, maybe added a roll cage, anything, but that isn't what Chris Harris was talking about. He was talking about 'normal' tests. Just when they send their cars to Evo, Auto-Bild Sport (german), or even /Drive. They set up their cars for the track to be used, and send, as I said before, two different cars for two different purposes. This is totally beneath all other companies, specifically Porsche and McLaren.
I wonder how much faster it can go with the latest Pirelli or Michelin Tires. The new corsas are said to be as grippy as the old Trofeo R. With this much power, lap times are just about grip, grip and grip.
Dont shit on these guys, they put a lot of hard work in this. Its fine if you think Drive did a better job, but don't discourage other peoples work. Imagine if it were you and people wrote that in the comments about you.
So you're happy with just one video? By the almighty Drive? I'm very happy that Dickie is going to give us another video and I know it'll be a good one too… Quit your moaning.
George gronge Why should we support rubbish? I made a living by giving presentations - if I made a hash of it I wouldn't get another booking and someone better would. Effort does not equate with effectiveness. Grow a pair - the real world is dog eat dog and if you're shambolic you fall by the wayside. As a video presenter Meaden makes a good magazine writer.
Gawd... this car is sooo intelligently designed; it's beyond sexy. Makes the LaFerrari look like dog-shit by comparison. This coming from a Ferrari fan.
It's funny cuz before mclaren was only known for the 12c which was known for being pretty dull and not much styling, while ferraris were very stylish. The P1 on the other hand is very stylish, looks like a spaceship, and exciting, while the LaFerrari is ugly in comparison, can't stand those mirrors on the ferrari.
Evo, you guys need to step it up! Drive got this car right! Evo must have drawn the short straw, you guys got the bloated designers view, Drive got the sharp and eloquent test driver's view of how truly great this car is! Get Harry back on this show!
Funny when he says at around 7:19 that absolutely every design decision was analyzed from a perspective of what would make it the best driver's car. That's bullshit, because they went with turbos...
TroublingStatueVII It certainly does have lag, and such has been pointed out in most of the in-depth reviews of the P1... Haven't you seen them? There's many on RUclips. The fact that they've tried to cover the lag via adding an electrical motor doesn't change the fact that turbos inherently have lag. It's just a physical reality. Turbo is a feedback loop...it can never be as quick response as normally aspirated. The LaFerrari on the other hand, does not have this problem. The normally aspirated V12 has instant response at any revs...and it ALSO has additional instant electric torque. The P1 electrical system is what Maclaren THEMSELVES call "torque-fill"...that should tell you something....
Ok, fair enough. Still doesn't detract it from being an amazing car. If I had the chance to buy one I definitely would not be put away by a bit of turbo lag, witch would probably be the last thing you think about when you are flying down the track anyway.
this car has grown on me more with every new video review. I now reckon its the best car ever produced. My god that blow off valve is orgasmic and i usually hate bov
Ferrari isn't ready to show it off to the world. I guess reliability problems is the main reason as I think no customer has received it yet although they prepaid for it.
giorx5 you sure make up a lot of bullshit, several customers already have LaFerrari there are 3 in Monaco at the moment and a few more in the States but unlike McLaren or Porsche they don't need to show the car to all the journalists to make it become more popular because unlike the other two..well.. it's a damn Ferrari
Lorenzo Locchi Mclaren doesn't choose to do so. They don't care about the fame really, just like alot of people never heard about the F1, while this was one of the best supercars ever made, holding the top speed record for almost a decade
kinda of a pointless question when in a technical vid but is that car a blackish purple or is that just the reflection?? either way its beautiful color, and that car is way more pretty then I thought it was going to be.
its actually just heat treated carbon fiber, they coat each piece with the lacquer then fire it again. it gives it a gorgeous shine, extra protection vs regular clear coat, and a beautiful blue/black sheer.
Porsche 918 is pretty much a hybrid of electric motors and gas. The new definition of 'drivers cars' ate these tech-infested cars. Gone are the days of proper isportscars that your grandmother could never take around the block, nevermind the track. Just accept whatever cones ur way or buy used like I do. 997 Porsche's are creeping in price so I'm in searching around without a care fir cars like these, no matter how fast they are.
+TheBi3N Haha get the 918. It's the bigger technological achievement IMHO. As Richard Hammond put it in his review of the 918: "McLaren (and Ferrari) used hybrid technology to spice up the supercar of today, Porsche used hybrid technology to save the supercar for tomorrow."
Came out 6 years ago and it's still amazing.
I'm such a car nerd. Love this car and detailed insights from the people that made it. Great video.
Who was be chief test driver. No Google allowed
Saw one of these up close at Mercato in Naples, FL the other night. Wow and still saying wow.
i need to win the motha f cking lottery!!
The engine sound of the P1 takes my memory back to the sound of the F1, it is really a great and fantastic sound!!
If thunder had a voice, it would be this. Angry and powerful.
Well done Paul Mackenzie, always great to hear from the people behind the McLaren P1 what an awesome car.

Brilliant, innovative technology and science of an art. Well done Mclaren! Cheers.
McLarne is a best technical innovated super/hyper car brand.
Beautiful masterpiece.
ALSO,i meant to say thank you for the in depth stuff. appreciate it.
Jesus H Christ that turbine noise in the cabin! Gorgeous!
Also noticed a smaller second caliper on the rear, I assume that is for the handbrake, and the other is for hydraulic?
The more I look at this car, the more details I notice, the more I am amazed.
So now all the things we do not know about the P1 after all these brilliantly detailed reviews are it's lap times.
you mean the nurburgring time? the one they say lapped in under 7 minutes, but wont say exactly how fast? tell me about it lol
AnHRTBus
- Yes, the Nurburgring and also Top Gear track lap time.
when i first saw the P1 a few months ago, i was disappointed, in fact i thought it was rather ugly. but the more i was looking at the car, the more i liked it, its one of those designs that really grow on you, just like the greatest music does. as of now, i think this is probalby the best looking supercar out there, its one generation ahead of the competition.

WOW What an engine. The opening chords of Kickstart my Heart.
Love the sounds that this engine makes, awesome machine!
what a great Machine. And what a great sound it makes. I'm in love with it.
Very cool how its form follows function, but it still looks amazing.

Beautiful. Just beautiful.
its even more amazing when you see it up close like this... ahh if only if only
Thank you, guys! I love the nerdy background!
the car looks so small besides those guys oO
People at McLaren build best supercars. More videos on details please. And I'd love to hear that whine.
Wow, that turbo at the end!
Porsche 918 has more features but P1 has more technical innovation.
i like it very much and everytime I look at it i like it more
Clarkson was blown away by the P1. Harris was blown away by the P1. I'm sure the EVO boys will also be blown away by the P1. Seems like another extraordinary piece of kit from McLaren.
Great Vid Dickie, Car geek heaven :-) Hadn't noticed the bloody great scoop in the door before, fantastic!
I've seen almost every review available on this car online, and only now i noticed something.. if (knock on wood) the engine compartment catches fire or there's a sudden failure, there's no way to access the engine at all! or is there any opening that I'm missing?
I want mine exactly like this one purple with that gray alcantara interior
EVO in print has always been the best, but they need to step up their game on here. Harris on /Drive and Shmee have the P1 covered.
Can you show how the taillights functions look, turn signals and reverse
This car is pure BEAUTY!

I wonder if the titanium heat-shield underneath the exhaust will get hot enough to get heat anodized. It would be cool if it eventually formed a subtle gradation of bronze, blues, and purples.
Surprised overrun is enough to keep the battery topped up. I know the regen braking has been one of the hardest parts of the porshe 918 to get right.
Fascinating. I wonder what that DRS feels like.
Damn I really like it :) 12C, 650S and P1... Great stuff
Excellent video. Deserves more views.
I love the design of this car. All the lines, and shapes form such an sleek and amazingly fast looking car even when it's not in motion. Wish I was rich....one can only dream.

Dream car. Beauty at every angle.
Beautiful!
If I put a K&N Filter in my Scion FR-S do I have a chance against the McLaren P1?
Stunning.
holy crap, the sound of it!
I would love to own a well made 1/8 scale model of the P1
Does anyone know if there will be La Ferrari videos?

ALL manufacturers send special cars for testing.
/Drive already did this, and dare i say they did it better
ShawJohn31 Chris Goodwin is chief test driver, not a salesman :)

Why should we support rubbish? I made a living by giving presentations - if I made a hash of it I wouldn't get another booking and someone better would. Effort does not equate with effectiveness. Grow a pair - the real world is dog eat dog and if you're shambolic you fall by the wayside. As a video presenter Meaden makes a good magazine writer.
thanks for this!
very informative. good video
i wish i had this job
Gawd... this car is sooo intelligently designed; it's beyond sexy.
Makes the LaFerrari look like dog-shit by comparison.
This coming from a Ferrari fan.
I much prefer the look of the LaFerrari, even though I absolutely despise Ferrari as a company and much prefer the 12C/650S to the 458.
I recently saw the LaFerrari at the Toronto Auto Show. I was shocked how stunning it looked in person. Unfortunately the P1 was not in attendance.
+John Ralph americans will NEVER EVER be able to build a car close to this
Toronto is Canada, who basically built the Aston Martin Vulcan
It's funny cuz before mclaren was only known for the 12c which was known for being pretty dull and not much styling, while ferraris were very stylish. The P1 on the other hand is very stylish, looks like a spaceship, and exciting, while the LaFerrari is ugly in comparison, can't stand those mirrors on the ferrari.
This is the one car i wish i could drive in my lifetime...
i guess EVERYONE was at the Yas Marina , for the Mclaren event haha ... these guys.... Schmee150.... Chris Harris....
The motor sounds like a supercharger. I think this is my new favorite car. :U~
Wow! Thanks!
Lamborghini Aventador v Mclaren P1 is all we want to see
I want it. I need it.
+Huxxy What's wrong with turbos exactly?
TroublingStatueVII Lag
Ok. Good thing the P1 doesn't have any.
HEY DICKIE,any idea WHEN A LAFERRARI is going to be available for testing.
ALSO, have you heard any rumors about the laferrari having any issues.
Still waiting for video of the review...
I love how "sleeping policeman" became a nickname for "speed hump". Classic hit-and-run jokes #stopnostop
I find Richard a great car journalist
this car has grown on me more with every new video review. I now reckon its the best car ever produced. My god that blow off valve is orgasmic and i usually hate bov
Amazing car!
Honestly, and without any sarcasm or avarice, I can't decide if it's hideous or beautiful.
Fantastic car!
Okay i have a question for everyone. On this car does anyone else notice that the headlights look like the Mclaren logo?!
i am in love!
why i dont see any laferrari reviews?
Ferrari isn't ready to show it off to the world. I guess reliability problems is the main reason as I think no customer has received it yet although they prepaid for it.
The car hasn't started production yet.
giorx5 you sure make up a lot of bullshit, several customers already have LaFerrari there are 3 in Monaco at the moment and a few more in the States but unlike McLaren or Porsche they don't need to show the car to all the journalists to make it become more popular because unlike the other two..well.. it's a damn Ferrari
Lorenzo Locchi Are you sure they're final production cars though? I thought they're still fine-tuning it.
Lorenzo Locchi Mclaren doesn't choose to do so.
They don't care about the fame really, just like alot of people never heard about the F1, while this was one of the best supercars ever made, holding the top speed record for almost a decade
I didn't know that in race mode the p1 isn't a road legal car... interesting
shouldve released the driving segment first
Why does it have an open differential
kinda of a pointless question when in a technical vid but is that car a blackish purple or is that just the reflection?? either way its beautiful color, and that car is way more pretty then I thought it was going to be.
It's blackish purple. Very nice colour indeed.
its actually just heat treated carbon fiber, they coat each piece with the lacquer then fire it again. it gives it a gorgeous shine, extra protection vs regular clear coat, and a beautiful blue/black sheer.
Mr. Pagani, this is how a turbo engine should. Just a FYI.
For the price I would rather have the Huayra for many reasons. P1 is a monster however if your looking for track times
At this time, it is the perfect vehicle.
7:21 If you were trying to make the best drivers car why would u make it a hybrid?
Porsche 918 is pretty much a hybrid of electric motors and gas. The new definition of 'drivers cars' ate these tech-infested cars. Gone are the days of proper isportscars that your grandmother could never take around the block, nevermind the track. Just accept whatever cones ur way or buy used like I do. 997 Porsche's are creeping in price so I'm in searching around without a care fir cars like these, no matter how fast they are.
*are *for
Should I get this or the 918?
+TheBi3N Haha get the 918. It's the bigger technological achievement IMHO. As Richard Hammond put it in his review of the 918: "McLaren (and Ferrari) used hybrid technology to spice up the supercar of today, Porsche used hybrid technology to save the supercar for tomorrow."
Defo P1, just watch jeremy clarksons review of it, gives me shivers
See if you can count how many times the guy from Mclaren says "actually". I lost count :-D
Very good video, more like this, please.
Possibly the best car ever made ?
Maclaren are in a league of there own
is this the XP7 prototype?
