    I hope I can help.....my family raised bees years ago...If you do not split your hives every year, they will swarm, leaving your hive weak and vulnerable...when they are very strong and run out of room, the queen leaves and takes at least half of the hive....if the old hive doesn't make a queen quickly enough, the old remaining hive will die....so look into "splitiing" your hives if you have not done that....if not, I think that may be why you are losing your hives......Let me know if you "split" your hive....Hope this helps....Louisiana Homestead....Mr. E and Miss Kay Kay

    Also, you should get a mentor. I know that many beekeepers become mentors for new beekeepers. You can call and text them and they help answer your questions. Check around your area and online to see your options.
    Also, I don’t know when your hives died so it’s hard to say what the issue was. If it wasn’t too cold when they died, it could have been beetles. There’s a way to test how many beetles are in the hive and that will help you determine if you need to do a treatment or not. Good luck!!

  • @philipbutler6608
    @philipbutler6608 6 месяцев назад +6

    I watch Mike Barry. Hive beetles can be trapped with oil traps. Varroa Mites are a different critter. You treat for varroa mites when there is a dearth when they are not bringing in honey. Because you don’t want your honey contaminated. You only treat the deeps. Not the honey supers. I caught two swarms this spring. Put an old brood comb in your trap and use swarm commander or lemon grass oil and put it on a qtip in the box you can also sprinkle the top of the frame and put it up about 8 feet above the ground on tree. It is the propolis and comb smell that attracts them.

    Im not sure if you’ve spoken to anyone yet but there are some things you can do. Reach out to some local beekeepers in your area and see what they’d recommend.
    You can probably remove that comb and attach it to a frame. You can then put the frame back in without the bees losing any brood or resources. I’m not sure the best way to do this though because I’m not a beekeeper myself. I just love bees and have watched a ton of videos. Reach out for help to see what’s recommended!

    We put a Beatle hive container with vegetable oil in it in our hives. It helps. We also treat for mites every spring and fall. We use the strips in the hives. It helps a lot. Also the bees that you order in are not use to your area. It's always better to catch swarms because they come from your area and have made it through the winter. We also found out that feeding them over winter helped tremendously. I quit loosing so many hives just by doing those few things. Good luck. Bees are very fascinating creatures and also a mystery.

    You have to keep an eye on your hives, because if they are healthy they will self divide and create new swarms. It is helpful to place a small amount of lemon grass oil in the new hive as the smell attracts the bees for some reason. You did good trapping that new hive.

By 1983 we had expanded to around 800 hives, lage honey house 2 commercial extractors & steam heated decappers. I could tell about the time an old deep brood box & medium super fell apart. No suit on that day. Well I took off for the woods & Palmettos bushes. Wound up with quite a few stings. Face swelled up o bad I could hardly see. 😂😂😂😂 IT truly was a sight. Good luck with them!!!

    Coming home from work years ago, I had gotten off a bus in front of my local park when a bee went up UNDER my pants! It stung me on my behind. I didn't know what had "pinched" me, but I slapped at it. When I got home that dead bee fell on the floor. You should have seen me with my pants off and my mother inspecting the area for a stinger. I had an ice pack on it for an hour, LOL! I steer clear of bees. Glad that you two weren't hurt. Mr H falling off that ladder and the bees repeatedly stinging you Mrs H had me concerned!

    Second comment: I have always wanted to begin beekeeping but unfortunately do not have the space for it. Like you guys, I watch a ton of beekeeping videos.
    From what I’ve seen other beekeepers do, it seems that overwintering bees is the most difficult part of beekeeping. For your past hives, did you feed them at all? You shouldn’t inspect during the winter but you can put out some sugar candy on the top of the hive under the lid and that can help. I know that some beekeepers don’t feed their bees in the winter but many do because you’re more likely to lose the hive by not feeding them. I don’t know how much resources they’re supposed to have when winter starts but you can look that up if you’re not sure.
    Good luck with this season and hopefully they will survive the next winter! You have plenty of time to do some research 😊

    Well done on catching your first swarm. My excitement of catching bees was much simpler,I just left a hive out,baited with a few drops of lemongrass oil..within a week a swarm moved themselves straight in. My hive was a bit of a mess to start with as I'd left lots of open space, just added frames into gaps where I could and gradually they sorted themselves out into a more organised way. Still more frames to add into the box,mine wasn't a huge swarm though,they made up 5 frames in three weeks.

Free bees, but i am running out of room for them now LOL. I try and just keep 8 to 10 Hives a year. But as of right now I have 25 Hives. Love bees, but that many becomes a big job.
