Vader's delicate lightsaber swing is taken directly from the Empire Strikes Back film (the first wide shot after Luke gets up from being knocked down early in the fight) - it was such a distinct movement in the game, and then while watching the film and noticing it I couldn't believe the developers actually referenced the film choreography in the game sprites - gotta give them props for that!

For me, the n64 games, particularly rogue squadron really drew me into the star wars world. The Super Star Wars games were probably more true to the films but I couldn't appreciate them till later in life because they were so difficult 😅
That last flight while trying to escape the exploding Death Star was incredibly difficult. My brothers and I must have tried and failed hundreds of times before we finally made it. (Also, nice use of Mandy.)
The checkpoints help a lot, but the last two stages are troublesome if you don’t know to press the “speed up” button. Finally managed circa 2004 to beat it legit, but don’t think I’ll even find it a fun level.
"No other game hated their players like this" I don´t think it was as hard as contra or mega-man, but souls like creators probably developed their fetish with these games.
The titles honestly crack me up. Sure, "Super Star Wars" sounds good enough, just like other SNES games from pre-established series having "Super" in the title like "Super Metroid"... but then you have "Super The Empire Strikes Back" and "Super Return of the Jedi" which just sound silly. God, imagine if the first one was called "Super A New Hope."
I remember playing Super Empire back in 1995 at a friend's house. I hate it cause I sucked so bad. I thought I was just terrible at games in general, but it's good to know it wasn't just me and the game was actually difficult for most people.
Empire was definitely the hardest, then a new hope, then return of the Jedi. I beat return of the Jedi as a kid but could barely get passed the first stages on the other two
All three of these games were criminally hard, I love challenging games but these games made me want to break the controller in half, they really weren't that much fun because of it
Comeon man, the bug guy on Bespin is 4-Lom! I also never knew that so many Jawas needed to be murdered before I played these games lol. I absolutley loved the SSW Trilogy when it came out, and still play it to this day. I just wished the Prequel trilogy got the same treatment on the GBA because those games weren't that good. If you really want to become a Jedi, try playing Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back on NES. Throw Star Wars on Famicom in there for good measure. This was an entertaining video.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, this style of gameplay would have been sick for the prequels. I think that New Droid Army game was probably the closest
Luke Skywalker ANH: " But why would Imperial Troops want to slaughter Jawas?" Well, to find out where the droids are Luke. The big question is, why would YOU want to slaughter Jawas in the ANH SNES game?
You didn’t mention that the first one lacks a save function. You need the skill of a speedrunner to actually beat it without starting over from the beginning each time.
You got it wrong; Boba Fett didn't spend 30 years in the Sarlacc. He was in there a relatively sort time. Dengar found him not long after the battle having blasted his way out of the beast, killing it in the process. It's all right there in the 1998 novel "The Mandalorian Armor". You should check your sources.
Super RotJ is the only one I ever was able to beat as a kid. ESB, was wayyyyyyyy tooo hard, I don't think I ever made it past the wampa. The first one was better, but I seem to remember it had no save system... so with my limited video game time per session I could never beat it.
To quote something that usually MASSIVELY annoys me, but... All three of these games are the 'Dark Souls' of the Super Star Wars trilogy. And probably the best Star Wars games that don't have the words "Rogue" or "Squadron" in the title. Wow, that does also mean six of the top ten Star Wars games ever released were Nintendo exclusives.
Back in the day we made due with the games we had lol I played the hell out of these games. Well, the first two. Jedi was a rental. Never did beat them on amy setting above easy though, considering that was hard as hell as is.
I loved these games. Though I've yet to play Super ESB, I can imagine its gameplay is as ball-breakingly challenging as the other two. Last time I checked, Super Star Wars was the only one of them available digitally on PlayStation Store, which is an utter shame and pretty baffling. They were all made by the same developer, weren't they? Why have just one of available digitally when you can include all three? One of my fondest memories is getting to the Death Star trench final level of Super Star Wars on my best friend's old CRT television screen that would flash bright white for several seconds each time you were hit. That meant that a single hit could cause a chain reaction in which you're subsequently hit repeatedly until you die because you can't see what's happening on the screen. This practically forced (tee hee) me to beat it without taking a single hit, but it was incredibly satisfying when I did it because it felt like I had done the impossible.
I make pixel based mixed media art and am working on Jedi rn. Consider me a brother in arms because the shading on Vader being from Empire drives me absolutely bonkers

@WesDoesGames I cant tell if your reply makes me feel old or not lol. But I just replayed it on Switch and its every bit as good as I remember. After those and the SNES games and Jedi Academy 2 i dont think I 'love' any SW game but there are a ton that i find real entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed Force Unleashed; Dark Forces, Shadows of the Empire... probably a ton more (there are a ton) But I truly loved these SNES ones.
Hang on. The originals films were perfect until George Lucas decided to 'improve' them. In all seriousness, these games are great... on paper but dear lord the difficulty. I've beaten plenty of NES hard games but these are built different. I think the only way I ever revisit them is if someone creates a hack that eliminates enemy respawning. Someone did this with the first 2 Ninja Gaiden games so I know it's got to be possible.
15:49 For the love of god, what crime could possibly render such punishment? I love Star Wars. I read the Zahn trilogy in the early '90s when it came out. But after beating Star Wars on Game Boy I knew how masochistic these designers can be, knowing that people will buy the game anyway because of the franchise. If you really want to hurt yourself, do the Star Trek games.
Visually, I loved these games as a kid... but the gameplay and difficulty was way way too high. As for games that hate the player more than Super Star Wars Trilogy... Mega Man franchise on the NES is one of the top.
@@WesDoesGames exactly. I agree 100%. The X series were actually enjoyable, and some levels really cozy. Sure there were some levels and bosses that were wayyyy too much (MMX5 Virus Stage insta-kills, MMX4 Sigma has 3 fucking forms), but mostly they were amazing. X1, X3 and X6 are my favourites.

Finally managed circa 2004 to beat it legit, but don’t think I’ll even find it a fun level.
Another great video dude 👏
Thank you!
These games are too awesome. If you don't own them, they're definitely worth getting now while they're still cheap.
I've got empire and Jedi on snes carts, still need a new hope
@@WesDoesGames New Hope cart only is under $20
@@YourFunkLord Interesting Super Star Wars is available for PSN but not Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi.
I bought Empire on SNES used, and it was password-locked. I was crushed.
Hes a real sick son of a bitch...
Vader: "thats ma boy!"
Mark Hamill is 5ft 8ish and he is the Jedi Master.
Short king 👑
"No other game hated their players like this" I don´t think it was as hard as contra or mega-man, but souls like creators probably developed their fetish with these games.
I can definitely see the connection, especially with the creative but horrifying monsters
Super Force Awakens. It's super awakened, you guys
I beat return of the Jedi as a kid but could barely get passed the first stages on the other two
All three of these games were criminally hard, I love challenging games but these games made me want to break the controller in half, they really weren't that much fun because of it
Try the indy super nes game, the market fight will get bloody annoying real fast due to the music, i use to turn it off through that section.
I used my game genie on these games. I still love them!
Luke Skywalker ANH: " But why would Imperial Troops want to slaughter Jawas?"
Well, to find out where the droids are Luke. The big question is, why would YOU want to slaughter Jawas in the ANH SNES game?
There is also the Game Boy version of Super Star Wars Return of the Jedi...which plays differently and has a few different levels
I will *never* be okay with Chewbacca not getting a medal with Han and Luke. Definitely a fair time to pull the race card imo
He eventually got one in the sequels if that makes a difference lol
when someone says they like harder games like Dark Souls
yeah buddy you ever played Super Star Wars
That was a force kick.
You didn’t mention that the first one lacks a save function. You need the skill of a speedrunner to actually beat it without starting over from the beginning each time.
Times were tough before modern saving 😅
You got it wrong; Boba Fett didn't spend 30 years in the Sarlacc. He was in there a relatively sort time. Dengar found him not long after the battle having blasted his way out of the beast, killing it in the process. It's all right there in the 1998 novel "The Mandalorian Armor". You should check your sources.
I'm referring to the time between RotJ and Book of Boba Fett. It's a joke 😅
Super RotJ is the only one I ever was able to beat as a kid. ESB, was wayyyyyyyy tooo hard, I don't think I ever made it past the wampa. The first one was better, but I seem to remember it had no save system... so with my limited video game time per session I could never beat it.
Im not afraid to admit that i liked Jar Jar as a kid. He still makes me laugh
I admire your bravery
Love thee games wish they would remaster them for today's consoles
To quote something that usually MASSIVELY annoys me, but...
All three of these games are the 'Dark Souls' of the Super Star Wars trilogy.
And probably the best Star Wars games that don't have the words "Rogue" or "Squadron" in the title. Wow, that does also mean six of the top ten Star Wars games ever released were Nintendo exclusives.
The 90s were the best period for Star Wars games
Back in the day we made due with the games we had lol I played the hell out of these games. Well, the first two. Jedi was a rental. Never did beat them on amy setting above easy though, considering that was hard as hell as is.
It took me anf a buddy of mine the better half of a week to get thru Super Empire Strikes Back.
It's a Super hard time
You're f***ing hilarious 😅😅😅
✨😎✨
Those sound like great memories
That thumbnail is great
I make pixel based mixed media art and am working on Jedi rn. Consider me a brother in arms because the shading on Vader being from Empire drives me absolutely bonkers
Wow, genuinely surprised to see someone else cares about this lol
I liked the video... these games were cozy.
Definitely
no combat experience?? umm hello bullseye womp rats not good enough? lol.
It's a shame they didn't continue the series on the GBA and DS
Apparently they were on Game Gear
@@WesDoesGames imagine Super Phantom Menace on the GBA or Super The Force Awakens on the 3DS
@Concreteowl i was also hoping for this. Jar jar doing that crazy double jump while throwing boomas everywhere!
The only one of these I ever beat as a kid was Return.
I think Return was definitely easier than Empire
Good Job… I made my son play Super Star Wars recently …yes, Video game child abǔse is what i do. ☕️😂💯
That is awesome!
There was also no Super Phantom Menace either. The Last Jedi is still my favorite Star Wars movie.
For me the Super Star Wars trilogy were my favorite Star Wars games ever made!
0:16 You are correct, the originals aren't perfect, but let's not pretend those 1997 cartoons were original.
Boomer-ass opinion.
Woof, cartoons is harsh, but I get it. Those changes were mostly bad (especially the three hour shot of the giant lizard covering the screen)
@@WesDoesGames You wouldn't call the replacement musical number in Jabba's palace a cartoon? With that that little brown furry guy that looks like the one from the Honeycomb cereal commercials?
@KasumiKenshirou 😂☠️
It’s crazy the easy ass games I was not able to beat as a 7 year old….yet besides being able to blow up the Death Star… I was able to get thru this game. Except the fucking Death Star…. Redo that whole ass game for one trail and error task.
That's crazy
Mode 7 isn't a software feature, it's a hardware feature.
Thanks for the correction
I remember these games from when I was a kid and two things , yes these Games are criminally hard. Lastly the original Star Wars is AWESOME the clip you showed was from the Special Editions which are crap.
Lol no argument from me here. I still have that VHS boxset with the Vader stormtroopers and Yoda faces
7:17 They fly now?
tHeY fLy NoW!
These are The best SW games after KOTOR. And we were owning this game when we were, like, 10... it wasnt that hard
Never played Kotor but probably will before the remake
@WesDoesGames I cant tell if your reply makes me feel old or not lol.
But I just replayed it on Switch and its every bit as good as I remember.
After those and the SNES games and Jedi Academy 2 i dont think I 'love' any SW game but there are a ton that i find real entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed Force Unleashed; Dark Forces, Shadows of the Empire... probably a ton more (there are a ton)
But I truly loved these SNES ones.
Yeah, get rid of about half the enemies and it'd be perfect
Fallen order) I'm the hardest Star Wars game ever created
Super Star wars) Hello there
Was Fallen Order hard? I breezed through it pretty easy and I'm not particularly good
I beat all these as a kid.... I tried to play them recently at 50 years old I got destroyed😂😂
It's quite an accomplishment to beat any of these once
15:49 For the love of god, what crime could possibly render such punishment?
I love Star Wars. I read the Zahn trilogy in the early '90s when it came out. But after beating Star Wars on Game Boy I knew how masochistic these designers can be, knowing that people will buy the game anyway because of the franchise.
If you really want to hurt yourself, do the Star Trek games.
I look forward to the n64 games and most of the PS2 ones... After that, it may become a bit of a slog, lol
Awe man! No intro? Bro it would be awesome if you put it in all your future videos
I'm glad you like my intro! I have to get to the point quicker for the shorter videos
Visually, I loved these games as a kid... but the gameplay and difficulty was way way too high.
As for games that hate the player more than Super Star Wars Trilogy... Mega Man franchise on the NES is one of the top.
I was always an X over original series Mega Man player for this reason, lol
@@WesDoesGames exactly. I agree 100%. The X series were actually enjoyable, and some levels really cozy. Sure there were some levels and bosses that were wayyyy too much (MMX5 Virus Stage insta-kills, MMX4 Sigma has 3 fucking forms), but mostly they were amazing. X1, X3 and X6 are my favourites.
I beat all of these. On easy
😅
I actually beat empire when i was 8, no idea how 😂
You're a wizard
idk if someone already said so but those where dark troopers at the end!!!!!!
The giant robots before Luke fights Vader?
@@WesDoesGames yes, the black giant robots, they where absolutely dark troopers from the dark forces game, a detail that i absolutely would love if it was true
I played about one minute of Super Star Wars and said "F this game". Horrible nonsense.
Lol
The first 20 seconds of a star wars fan making a video and they trash star wars. What a surprise :P.
It's possible to love something and be critical of it
Was going to like, but it’s on 666 so…. It has to stay
At least get me to 669 bro
Only the Super Star Wars games and Shadows of the Empire are canon. The movies and everything else are Expanded Universe.
Hey, I'm Wes!
But I'm Wes...
This is the new Trend...make fun of the old Titles.
The best version of these games was on Game Gear. What GG RotJ lacks in graphics and sound, it also lacks in stupid bullshit spam.
It's almost like a Castlevania when you play Leia with the whip.
I had no idea this was on Game Gear! I would have loved that as a kid. The only game I remember having for it was a crappy Sonic spin off
