If there's anyone who hasn't watched Knives Out yet.... biggest miss out of two centuries. It's visually brilliant and the whole thing is a love letter to detective fiction genre as a whole especially Christie's starstudded close circle mysteries. It's beautiful and quaint and funny I love it so much.
I thought you were bashing it, I was about to tell you you’re objectively wrong 😂 but YES, Knives Out and Glass Onion are some of the best films to come out in a WHILE
"So many of you guys like happy shows, and I don't have a lot of happy books"😂I can 100% relate. I just seem to naturally gravitate towards book with darker themes.
"Good Omens" is a happy show! Especially for a story about the end of the world, literally. But it's funny and witty, and full of love, and very, very humane, even tho half of the characters aren't even humans. And it's based on a brilliant book by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, AND Neil himself was the script writer and the showrunner, so he made sure they made something sir Terry would have been proud of. Highly recommend.
@@dead_poet143 that's one of my favorite books of all time, I kid you not, even thinking about it makes me instantly happy. I'm also a huge fan of Sir Terry, so please consider reading some of his works, they all are ridiculously awesome!
If you like Howl's Moving Castle, you definitely have to give A Winter's Promise a try! It just has that same energy and I could definitely see it being adapted into a ghibli film.
@@reynajelly it ages well. It’s about a teenage girl with super strength basically that saves the world… a lot. Slayers are a part of something bigger but their slayer ability is all tied to fate. The best part of the show is the writing and the friend group. PassionoftheNerd does a really good video on why you should watch it def recommend checking it out.
About Buffy, some don't know that there is a book called Slayer by Kiersten White that takes place some years after Buffy. It's not about Buffy but it's a brand new series that's set in the Buffy Universe. Also Gossip Girl is based of books as well. Great video as usual 🥰
You tell the whole summary of a book without even spoiling it. Love you Cari. Found this channel recently and already in love with it. I read to kill a kingdom after watching your video on fantasy standalone books and loved it. I'm currently reading sorcery of thorns and it seems really interesting. P.s. As I think about it, you look like Elizabeth from sorcery of thorns.
Bunny by Mona Awad has very similar vibes to Heathers! A group of MFA students who all call each other Bunny and do very interesting (cultish) things to write theirs stories
If you need more happy books, I recommend Ascendance of a Bookworm by Miya Kazuki. Book-obsessed girl dies and is reincarnated as commoner child in a medieval world, thus starting her quest to find (or make) her beloved books. Early chapters are a little weak (it was originally published as a web novel) but gets better fast, and now warms my soul when I read it. Anime adaptation was pretty good too, if you'd rather just watch an episode to get the vibe.
This video idea is so cool and I definitely just added a bunch of books to my tbr! Also it would be great if you left the picture of the book you're talking about all throughout you speaking about it so it's easier :)
I think that your description of Ace of Spades was perfect because I feel like you can prepare for it but nothing will fully prepare you for it lmao. I also love The Inheritance Games! I would say Ninth House is perfect for Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
You have such entertaining video ideas! Always love your content 😍 Here are my recommendations for: Heathers (film) - Bunny by Mona Awad (book) Bunny follows Samantha, a New England MFA student, who is randomly invited to join a clique of rich girls who call each other 'Bunnies.' It's a weird story of magical realism, dark academia, and feels like a fever-dream. The Good Place (show) - Anxious People Fredrik Backman (book) Anxious People confronts themes of existentialism and ponders on the value of life, which reminds me of TGP. The book is a unique take on a bank robbery and hostage situation, following a group of strangers whose lives unfold with more common ground than they think. It's charming, heartwarming, and also heart-wrenching; it made me laugh and cry! Gilmore Girls (book) - The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater (book) TRB follows Blue and a group of private school boys who are on a quest to find and wake an ancient Welsh King. It's an atmospheric urban fantasy (set in a small town in Virginia), extremely character-driven, and whimsical. TRB is not necessarily feel-good all the way, but Blue's feminist witchy family dynamics reminds me of the girl-power of Gilmore Girls. Also, Blue's initial reluctance to associate with the boys reminds me of Rory's unwillingness to go to private school. I hope you'll find these useful!
Love your content 💖 I read this book back in elementary school called "the westing game" and its totallyyy just the kids version of knives out! This video was a nice little reminder of when I first started to really enjoy reading 😊

Thank youuu 🍀 I’ve literally downloaded every book you recommended 😅 Maybe it’s the way you can describe books and how passionate you talk about them! Love it 🤗
I thought the inheritance games was a lot like Rebecca by daphne du maurier. They both have the mysterious girl that is not longer around that everyone reveres but also won’t share too much info about. And there are even identical scenes from both books… which I won’t specify because of spoilers
" I don't have a lot of happy backs " - I can absolutely relate with that because I don't read happy books, everything I read or is on my TBR list has a dark theme . 😂😂 And I was desperately waiting for your new video to come because I love it when you talk about books, I like to watch you because you're someone who treasures books as much as I do ❤️ and your voice is like therapy and you make me laugh at times . ❤️ and Girl you look gorgeous in that top 👍👍 ❤️❤️. I came bc of the Buffy thumbnail and stayed for the great recs:) for the Gilmore girls one you could do a vid about all the books Rory has read (there’s lists on the internet about all the books the show references). I think there’s at least a couple hundred though so maybe just talk about the ones you’ve liked… looking forward to ace of spades when it’s out in Canada- thanks for the rec!
Honestly! Her recommendations for Buffy are all books that I have that are on my TBR, it made me very excited to read them. I started watching Buffy the very first day it premiered and it remains my absolutely favorite series.
I started watching Buffy last year because of Kiersten White's Slayer duology which is based on the Buffyverse. I'm 17 and I didn't really expect to love a show that premiered years before I was even born! It's officially my favorite show of all time.
omg i'm early, also i want to recommend If We Were Villains by M.L Rio if you liked gossip girl, they are actually really different but the plot about rich kids gettin away from crime is in some way related
As always, thanks for the recommendations! For those wanting books a kin to Juno (early 2000’s hilarious coming of age/teen romance with great female leads) I recommend the Ruby Oliver books by e. Lockhart and Sloppy Firsts by Meghan McCafferty. ❤️
Knives out was really popular in Spain because the main actress is from Spain. She was really famous when I was a teenager because of a tv show about a boarding school where a series of murders happen 😏 Also, similar? to buffy there is beautiful creatures, the book and the movie are amazing (or so I remember)
Ohmygosh, I loved The Clique and All American Girl as a teenager, it's so nostalgic to see you bring them up!! Also, so many good recommendations in this list!! I would love for this to be a continued video idea~ it's very fun!
Heyy, regarding comedy, there’s the “O’hare and fox” series by Janet Evanovich which starts with “The Heist”, it’s about Kate, a FBI agent that catches this con artist called Nick who is really charming and they have to team up and use his connections to solve another case. It’s a light read, it’s fun, has action and comedy!
Really enjoyed this recommendation video idea! I would love if you could make a video about the “Vampire Academy” book series by Richelle Mead! It’s my favorite book series! It’s YA fantasy! The world the author built is so cool! It starts in an academy in America but it looks like those old European universities! (Cool aesthetic haha) and the main character is sarcastic and sassy haha, it has action, the love story is amazing but focuses on friendship as well! :)
I know this is literally years later, but another recommend for Heathers could be The Luckiest Girl Alive. It is about a woman's journey from high school to reunion about how she has formed this perfect image of what is expected of her in society, but doesn't shy away from the real traumas she experiences due to high school drama and how that shaped that image.
I honestly don't have too many happy pure text books either, but! I think if you're open to manga there's a whole new dimension of possibilities. I will never stop recommending Witch Hat Atelier - I could actually go as far as recommending it to the Gilmore Girls enthusiasts.
I know in one of your last videos you mentioned giving recommendations for book videos and one I recently came up with was book recs based on your favorite Ghibli movie. Although I feel like that could be potentially hard because I feel like some Ghibli movies have similar vibes so maybe a video of just book recs that have Ghibli vibes 😂 But while I’m here I have a book rec that I personally thought had some Ghibli vibes and it’s called Egg and Spoon by Gregory Maguire. It takes place sometime in the 1800’s in Russia and these two girls from very different walks of life meet each other and their worlds get flipped upside down. And there’s magic and a bunch of other stuff and I was reminded of a Ghibli film especially with the Baba Yaga part.
For anyone looking for something along the lines of A Quiet Place, I'd recommend Bird Box by Josh Malerman. It's a horror where people immediately die if they make eye contact with this unknown ~force~ so they're forced to stay home or walk around completely blindfolded. It's creepy, it's great. (It's also a movie.)
For the criminal minders I recommend the mindhunter book (which also a tv show). It’s so interesting. Made me give up fantasies of becoming profiler cuz .....not a spoiler the some people are ...not nice. It’s interesting cus the author explains how this serial killers are made not born. Walks us through the process. Great video I like all the books you recommend. I came your channal after watching shadow and bone and bought the six of crows after your recommendation. Love u 😽
Movies or TV shows that were based on obscure, little-known books or plays would be amazing. I wouldn't be surprised if some of these adaptations changed names.
THE ALIENIST REPRESENTATION!!!! i love this, i feel like this book and especially the show are so underappreciated. the first season is _STELLAR_ . would 10/10 reccomend this to everyone 😌❤️
Annihilation was such an interesting book; it’s the best book in the Southern Reach Trilogy. If there are any fans of the movie Arrival, then I recommend reading the collection of short stories by Ted Chiang, Stories of Your Life and Others. All the stories are interesting, Arrival is based off of the one titled, "Story of Your Life.” For the Buffy fans I reckon reading the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics would probably be worthwhile. Some of my recent reads: Orphan X by Gregg Hurwitz - Very Jason Bourne-esque. Bedelia by Vera Caspary - A pulp novel written in 1945 within the “femme fatale” genre. I am currently reading The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.
If you liked Knives Out, there's a good chance you'll like The Crooked House by agatha christie, which also has a 2017 movie adaptation. Both works share a lot of similatirties and I haven't seen anyone talk about it. Both talk about an old and rich man who suddenly dies and his co-dependant family who want the inheritance. But, interestingly, Knives Out and Crooked House go to totally different directions in the solving of the mystery.
Gossip girl was originally a book series, but it is very different from the show and not particularly good imo... but it was a perfect beach read 10 years ago lol
Both 'You' and 'The Silent Patient' were straight out 5/5 for me..My favourites...but I don't see much of a connection there😅...still happy you recommended both😜 'The guest list' has a very similar vibe to big little lies. We don't know what crime has happened till the very end but in the first chapter itself, we have the feeling that something bad has happened
Oh, for Dark I highly recommend Recursion and/or Dark Matter by Blake Crouch. And Middlegame by Seanan McGuire. These books blew my mind recently and they get pretty dark and twisty (not AS dark and AS twisty as Dark but I don't think that's even possibel :D).
Both the book and the film of Annihilation are so unsettling. As in I've now got trauma and can never look at deer the same way again. Psychological horror is just so terrifying.
An interesting take on suspense is Emma Healey's novel "Elizabeth Is Missing" (it is best read in audiobook for dramatic effect), Glenda Jackson did an excellent job as Maud in the 2019 BBC adaptation. Regrettably, now my husband references the film whenever I buy canned/tinned peaches!
I have nearly 200 books on my TBR which I cannot read yet cos I'm preparing for board exams, and now I have just added a couple more 😂 but I always love your reccs. Have you read the Warcross series? It's something one might like if you like Ready Player One!
recommendation for Big Little Lies: if u want the same thriller u might want to also try The Husband's Secret by the same author. And if u like the "moms involved in their children's school activities" (lol idk what's that called) aspect, u might want to read Where'd You Go Bernadette?
For those who want a book with the feeling of The Heathers (with The Craft) read Bunny. The book is the most insane I ever read but feels like a crazy mix of this two movies.
If anyone is into serious (not happy) fantasy, I've heard that Dreams of the Dying by LIetzau (can't remember first name) is very Inception-like (but very grim in places). Also, for Heathers, a new release that would work well with that is The Ivies by Alexa Dunn.
Annihilation (all 3 books in the series) is by far the strangest thing I have ever read. I don't think I finished the last book because it was just so weird and I forgot or couldn't even follow the plot anymore... Not sure I would correlate it with A Quiet Place though, but I don't read much post apocalyptic alien invasion books so I don't know what book would be more similar.
Ha ha ha only half way through but already sensing a funny pattern: I didnt like "Knives Out" at all, but loved "Inheritance Games". Thank you so much- it was also thanx to you that I found that book. I agree that "Knives Out" is a well made movie. And all individual elements of it are great: acting, cast, script, set, costume,... but I also felt like I had seen it all before somewhere. None of it was original to me. All nuances might have been an homage to many different sources, but to me they felt more like endless little inferior copies of superior original material. I really dislike "How to get away with murder", but "The Likeness" sounds really intriguing, thank you for the recommendation. I also started the first season of HTGAWM a while back, but was really bored. I thought it was too predictable and I didn't like the cast. I would not gravitate to any book with "The Heathers" as a theme, but just finished "A Deadly Education" and enjoyed it immensely! Finally I just decided to purchase "Ace of Spades" on Audible... and I have been going through my wishlist for days, desperately struggling to find the next thing I really wanted to read. Your review of this book intrigued me. And... that even though I would not at all be interested in reading something, which was in any way like Gossip Girl. (Don't get me wrong- back in the day I loved that show, but I am just not interested in that angle right now). But your introduction intrigued me, because I already have a few theories what was going on in the story ... and now I need to find out if I am right 😜 😜 😜 😜 ...ok just finished ❤ wow so many amazing recommendations... will def give Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Ninth House, and Crescent City a try... as well as will watch that murder in xyz street movie(?), too, cause you mentioned it alongside sherlock ... and I love sherlock... maybe also After Dark by Murakami, if I can find an English Audio-Book version anywhere. Thank you so much!!!!! 💓
You said the clique end I immediately thought about the BBC tv show. I highly recommend it for the ones who suggested Heathers or like thriller. It’s a psychological thriller. Careful, has some hard scenes.
Some things are best enjoyed the way they're originally made, like Knives Out, The Good Place etc. There really aren't anything close enough to satisfy because there are just so much going into it not just the script.
[SPOILERS FOR GILMORE GIRLS AHEAD] its funny to me that i stopped watching gilmore girls right after rory got to yale and now i see myself avoiding the ninth house bcs rory annoyed me with her whole yale thing lol
hey cari, read angelfall series by susan ee. its really good with angels and demon, post apokoliptic YA fantsay, not to mention a character that has schizophrenia which makes it really interesting.i bet you will love it.

Just a suggestion u can actually read Buffy the vampire slayer. The books I have personally r omnibuses but they’re self contained stories taking place within the tv shows early seasons. Season 1 and 2 specifically I do believe. So if ur more of a reader but what to get an idea for what Buffy is tonally I completely recommend them. They r written w the idea that uve seen the show so they’re light on the character intros and slip in some show mentions but nothing that u have to know for it to make sense.

Love u 😽
i had no idea mindhunter was a book first omg!! and thank you!!
Wow, so many fabulous recommendations! This is great, thank you so much Cari!!
Movies or TV shows that were based on obscure, little-known books or plays would be amazing. I wouldn't be surprised if some of these adaptations changed names.
Night Film was definitely an awesome book! It freaked me out and it was such a psychological twister.
I just bought Ace of Spaces which is totally not the type of book I'd normally read but it sounds so good!
THE ALIENIST REPRESENTATION!!!! i love this, i feel like this book and especially the show are so underappreciated. the first season is _STELLAR_ . would 10/10 reccomend this to everyone 😌❤️
All American Girl! Gosh that is a throwback!
Annihilation was such an interesting book; it’s the best book in the Southern Reach Trilogy.
If there are any fans of the movie Arrival, then I recommend reading the collection of short stories by Ted Chiang, Stories of Your Life and Others. All the stories are interesting, Arrival is based off of the one titled, "Story of Your Life.”
For the Buffy fans I reckon reading the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics would probably be worthwhile.
I actually finished all the series and I hated them haha
inception was very inspired by paprika!!
Annihilation is also a movie! Amazing analysis done by beyond the screenplay as well :)
Both 'You' and 'The Silent Patient' were straight out 5/5 for me..My favourites...but I don't see much of a connection there😅...still happy you recommended both😜
'The guest list' has a very similar vibe to big little lies.
Your content is very original and creative and i love watching it! thank you ♥️
Both the book and the film of Annihilation are so unsettling. As in I've now got trauma and can never look at deer the same way again. Psychological horror is just so terrifying.
For The Heathers I recommend you Hollow Pike, its like mean girls with witches and murders.
For Buffy, I believe Jim Butcher The Dresden Files can be a good series to check out
Cari, how do you find colors that complement you so well?! Love your style
the fact that i was cleaning my room when you talked about it
I have nearly 200 books on my TBR which I cannot read yet cos I'm preparing for board exams, and now I have just added a couple more 😂 but I always love your reccs.
Gossip GIrl is also based on series of books by Cecily von Ziegesar! But I'm not sure if it's good.
I read them and hated them haha also they aren't so similar to the tv show
IS THAT BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER I SEE IN THE THUMBNAIL 👀👀👀😍
that she isssss!!!
@@caricanread I am a simple person. I see Buffy, I click.
Book recommendations for 90s tv Shows: Friends, Baywatch, King Of Queens, 90210 etc
I haven't read series of unfortunate events since like 2011 but they were my absolute favourite books, I love the netflix show as well!
The Silver triology (Dream A little Dream) by Kerstin Gier is about dreams.
WE NEED PART 2!!!!
‘the likeness’ kinda sounds like the book i read in school ‘an inspection calls’
I love your channel! I would love more True crime recommendations too xx
thank you!! and i need more true crime recs too tbh ahhaha
Y’all have read the classic In Cold Blood by Truman Capote right?!? It’s great :)
The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin is also super Knives Out-esque!
Was looking for this comment. I loved that book!
Not sure I would correlate it with A Quiet Place though, but I don't read much post apocalyptic alien invasion books so I don't know what book would be more similar.
enjoyed this very much!!!! thanks to you now my tbr list is expanding....rapidly😂♥️
Ha ha ha only half way through but already sensing a funny pattern:
I didnt like "Knives Out" at all, but loved "Inheritance Games".
But your introduction intrigued me, because I already have a few theories what was going on in the story ... and now I need to find out if I am right 😜 😜 😜 😜
...ok just finished ❤ wow so many amazing recommendations... will def give Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Ninth House, and Crescent City a try... as well as will watch that murder in xyz street movie(?), too, cause you mentioned it alongside sherlock ... and I love sherlock... maybe also After Dark by Murakami, if I can find an English Audio-Book version anywhere.
Also! Nine perfect strangers is also a tv showssss
[SPOILERS FOR GILMORE GIRLS AHEAD]
its funny to me that i stopped watching gilmore girls right after rory got to yale and now i see myself avoiding the ninth house bcs rory annoyed me with her whole yale thing lol
LMAO
She was really annoyed and tbh, I think she gets worse as the series keeps going
Knives Out is such an immaculate movie 🙌🏽 you’re missing out if you haven’t watched it
hey cari, read angelfall series by susan ee. its really good with angels and demon, post apokoliptic YA fantsay, not to mention a character that has schizophrenia which makes it really interesting.i bet you will love it.
i'll look this up!!!
Love that book!!!
Omg I love the Duchamp poster! Where did you find it?
Omg I just found your channel and I’ve been binge-watching your videos, love your personality, you seem very sweet and chill, also you have *taste*
Btw you’ve convinced me to read Howl’s Moving Castle
The synopsis of a deadly education kinda reminds me of legacies
Just a suggestion u can actually read Buffy the vampire slayer. The books I have personally r omnibuses but they’re self contained stories taking place within the tv shows early seasons. Season 1 and 2 specifically I do believe. So if ur more of a reader but what to get an idea for what Buffy is tonally I completely recommend them. They r written w the idea that uve seen the show so they’re light on the character intros and slip in some show mentions but nothing that u have to know for it to make sense.
For Criminal minds you can read Mindhunter which is also a tv show with 2 seasons. 😊
Regretting You by Colleen Hoover is a bit darker than Gilmore Girls, but it does have the same vibes
