@@JPDeRoseOutdoors thanks for the response. Im in southern california and we fish 6-12lb/8-17lb rods for perch, corbina, croaker, halibut, hence why ill go for a 3k sized reel.
This is from the website: “Lighter than its predecessor, the Sustain now features Long Stroke Spool to provide anglers with improved casting distance. MicroModule II gearing combined with Shimano's HAGANE Gear and SilentDrive technologies offer anglers smooth reeling performance. “
You got a new subscriber here. About 4 weeks ago on the Shimano school I asked you about the Chronarch G and you told me everything I needed to know. Fished the first one two days and had another one on the way. Will be getting a third before long, love that reel lol so thanks to you and CA.
Thanks JP for the great breakdown. Great reel. But, noticed if you want to purchase an extra spool the spool on this model does not come off when drag cap is removed. My other Shimano reels allow spool removal - easy slip off / slip on....keep fishing. Am I missing something obvious here to remove the spool? Do not want to tinker with a brand new reel. Noticed a 4 point-pin (key) inside. Do I remove this to pull spool off and put another spool (and line) on? Any ideas comments appreciated.
Main differences are bearing count, body material compared to Vanford, Ridgid Support Drag and slight weight differences. The Sustain also has the MGL rotor combined with Aluminium frame. Best of both worlds between stradic and Vanford really.
@@FinFactorFishing Superior 🤣Just one more bearing and not much else. Vanford is just as good, I own both. Actually prefer the Vanford, it's lighter and looks better 😁
A great review JP! I've had Sustains over the years, and have always enjoyed them, but not a big step above the Ci4+. Would you be willing to comment on how it contrasts with the Vanford, in general and their drag systems specifically? Just wondering whether the extra $60 is for any thing but the stylish looks of the new Sustain. Just bought the Exsence 3000 - what an upgrade on that drag system!
I have an expride B 6’8” M spinning rod that i needed a reel for. I went with a 20 Twinpower fd c3000mhg. Is it going to be to heavy? Should i have gone with a Sustain fj? Thanks
The Twin Power has 10+1 bearings and a Ci4+ side plate but very similar. I've always thought personally the Twin Power in the smaller sizes for inshore fishing isn't what it was designed for. I really like the 8000 size for offshore fishing but the D versions for inshore being $430 or so I'm not sold. The offshore competes more with the Saragosa and it's a big step up. From the Sustain to the Twin Power in say a 4000 size, not sure it's worth 40% more money. Just my thoughts.
I believe the 1000 and 2500 are felt drag washers which are actually better for finesse applications. The Cross Carbon washers tend to have a sticking point sometimes but they are more durable
I was hoping they made a 1000 size again, the last 2 models didn’t have a 1000 size! I guess I will stick with my Stradic ci4 FB and the Vanford 1000, Please Shimano make a 1000 size in the Sustain again!
Ive still got a fg 1000 only fished 2 time just serviced it found it in my boxes of reels so got another 10 years + use left. My 4000 just died i fished the to its death though.
@@smoovefishing nice just got a fg 2500 today not a great deal of improvement first impression more solid drag knob on old fg this locks down better though have to fish it now. Got a fk stella 5000 last week smooth as all i can pic is spool noise but not a mechanical issue.
Just ordered the 4000 for my man but now I see that the stella fj 3000 is on sale for 525$ I want it! Lol but, was wondering if that's worth grabbing n stashing away for Father's day as well? Not necessarily a technical question lol but damn when I saw this sustain I wanted it for myself! Haha so I ordered it straight away, then surfed some more online and see the stella on sale. Was wondering how they compare tho, any thoughts anyone?:)
Didn't have the 5000 to shoot so I am not sure but I can't see why not? I didn't look at the back of the reel foot to see if it was Japan or Malaysia. They don't make reels in China that I know of. Malaysia is their own factory so it doesn't make a difference if it was Japan or Malaysia. Shimano doesn't outsource the production to anyone. It is always their factory and their employees from what I understand. Wish I could give you a more definitive answer. Sorry man!
From what I have seen in the other models it is usually 3000 and up. Not certain if the 2500 has it on this one though. Didn't get that deep into the spec but I can find out

Awesome reels! I have a 2500FG still going strong! What’s the difference with this new sustain and a Vanford spec wise please
Body material being the main thing. Sustain is the all metal body, Vanford is a Ci4+ body. Both have the MGL Rotor.
Can I use this with a Shimano anarchy shore spin which is 6-12 kg for jigging and rock fishing?
Which would be better for fishing off the surf, vanford or this new sustain? Thank you for the informative video, subscribed.

How would you say it compares to a twin power xd? Thinking of getting a 3k in either sustain or twin power
Amazing review , explains everything clearly in layman's terms. I'm still deciding on a saragosa 5000 or sustain or a vr50 for river/lake stripers
