    For collecting games today, I'd say get a Dreamcast. I've had mine for about three years and I've managed to get my hands on around 90% of the games that typically show up on "best of" lists for the system (MvC2, Sonic Adventure 1&2, RE: Code Veronica, Skies of Arcadia, Space Channel 5, Jet Grind Radio, etc.) as well as some hidden gems. Once I can get Soul Calibur, Shenmue, Grandia 2, and Power Stone 2, my collection will pretty much be complete. I've gotten a little lucky with what I've spent on my games so far $11 for a MvC2 disc and I'm still kicking myself for not grabbing Grandia 2 for $30 when I had the chance) but a lot of the staples for the console still run less than $20-25 with the case and manual, and if you're willing to settle for just the disc, even more of the better, rarer games drop below $50. Good luck finding prices in that range for most of the best or "essential" N64 games, and I'd say the Dreamcast library has just as many quality games if not more than the N64. Plus the console itself will cost you half as much as an N64 I've noticed in retro shops, and that's just comparing base models, and the accessories like controllers and memory VMUs won't set you back half as much as the Nintendo console's equivalent. Getting an N64, enough controllers for multiplayer and the quality staples will set you back a hell of a lot more than doing the same for the Dreamcast.
    The one thing I'll say for the N64 is that it's much, MUCH easier to find quality games for the N64 in retro gaming shops, and of you frequently visit those shops you will eventually find whatever you may be looking for while most shops I've been to have been lacking in their Dreamcast offerings; if I'd started collecting N64 games three years ago instead of Dreamcast, and I'd had the cash, my collection for it would have been complete after a year just by buying games from one shop in my area.
    I should also point out Dreamcast interest has been on the rise the past couple of years in the retro gaming community (at least in my area) so price difference in collecting the games for either system could be more equivalent sooner if not later. So if you're really interested in the Dreamcast and what it has to offer (and you want hard copies of the game, like myself instead of using the burned ROM hacks), you should start collecting now before pricing starts going up.

    The Dreamcast is from the GameCube generation, but its a "What should you collect for" comparison. I guess it's OK to vs different generation for that reason.

    People have too much nostalgia associated with N64. Like Goldeneye? I'd recommend playing Timesplitters 2, or the remastered 60 fps Perfect Dark on Xbox 360/One. Want to play Shenmue? Then pick up that Dreamcast, boy. It just has that style.

      You're the fanboy here. I'm just speaking about what I know about the systems. Do some research. Also, the N64 does have advantages. Both storylines are on the cartridge, and because of the format, the game has little to no loading. You could've picked a better example. Since most N64 versions of games are worse, because of the limited space on carts.

    I just couldn't get into the N64. There's pretty much nothing that interests me, and the visual quality is awfully muddy. It's not that I don't like old graphics, it's just that EVERYTHING 3D on the N64 is ugly.

    Not sure why you would compare a 5th gen console to a 6th gen. The N64 was a rival to the Saturn back in the day. The Dreamcast destroyed the N64 (look at Shadowman) but are both excellent consoles. Own them both.. I do!!

      therock3314 I still own all 5th and 6th gen consoles which are fully functioning and have huge collections for them including many unofficial unreleased games. I have owned most from launch and can see the merits in collecting for all of them. It is true, as you say, that the DVD player aspect of the PS2 was a huge positive for many for the PS2. Whereas I can see that the Dreamcast had a far superior post-life homebrew and indie scene. I truly find it idiotic and asinine for those trying to continue the console wars from decades ago.. many of whom were neither born nor active consumers at that time!!

      referral madness Goemon aged very well. It is one of the very few Nintendo 64 games to have music equal to that of the quality on a disc, as it made great use of the extra space on the cartridge. It had amazing environments, though could have had a vehicle system at some point; amazing castles, which had music that progressively got better the farther you got and so much more.

    A lot of people say the Dreamcast is cheaper to collect for, but here in Colorado, N64 is the most common console I have seen to date! A regular N64 here with AV cables, power supply, and a controller will cost you about only $35. But a Dreamcast with all the cables and controller, usually is about $200 here in your local ma and pa game store. And I have been to every Goodwill in my state, and every one of them has at least about 5 N64 carts in stock, and when you ask for Dreamcast games, they all say: "What's a Dreamcast?"

    my two favorite consoles of all time! personally i'd give the n64 the slight edge over the DC just cause the n64 was by far the most groundbreaking console of that generation and did everything from force feedback, to analogue thumbstick control, to being an upgradeable and 4-player console out of the box before anyone else really did any of that. it also pioneered all the elements of modern 3d gaming that other consoles of that generation and generations since have essentially only borrowed from and built on. if there had never been an n64, there would almost certainly be no dreamcast, or at least not the dreamcast as we know it.

    • @BLY99
      @BLY99 8 лет назад +1

      So much bullshit in such a short comment. Force feedback is what you call the rumble function which was just a shitty version of what arcades did before. The Sega Genesis already had an analogue controller and so did the PS1 before the N64 had it. Upgradeable consoles are way older than the N64. The N64 came out 2 years after the PS1 which was all about 3D gaming and you also had the Saturn, Atari jaguar, 3DO and so on which already did 3D gaming before the N64???? Are you serious? Do you really think that Nintendo invented 3D gaming? Do you not know that other consoles and especially PC did it way before them? Are you really this stupid?

    • @adesignersperspective
      @adesignersperspective 8 лет назад +5

      BoloYung firstly, you need to find real problems in life to get your panties all in a twist about.
      secondly, let's break down your rebuttal one thing at a time:
      1. many consoles had analogue controllers before the n64. that's known. the majority of them, including the one for the genesis, were not at all commonplace and not first party accessories. the ps1 dual shock with thumbsticks came out well after the n64 was the first console to really make analogue control via the thumbstick front-and-center (literally and figuratively) in 3d game design from that time forward.
      2. plenty of companies and consoles were doing 3d before the n64 yes, even the SNES and genesis and several before them, but the n64 really pioneered the 3d art form in home consoles and set the standard for what modern game development would become in that area. no one - not sony or anyone - was making 3d games remotely like mario 64, wave race, zelda OOT, goldeneye, etc etc etc - especially on consoles - before the n64 set those and many other standards. the ps1's game library largely blew ass for its first year of two of existence and its games started getting a lot better once nintendo showed up and set a higher bar and made so many types of games on the n64 that had at best never been seen before at all, and at worse never been seen before on a console. also we're talking about consoles here, not arcade machines, but nice try. because...
      3. the rumble pack made force feedback the industry standard in every console controller that came after it. rumbling steering wheels on arcade machines didn't do that. sorry. again, nice try!
      4. for the above-mentioned and everything else, the n64 made things commonplace and set so many industry standards that just didn't exist before it did. from 4 player control to creating entire genres and subgeners that simply didn't exist on any other console before it did.
      anyway, thanks for trying to prove to me how big your dick is. i'm so impressed. d-:

    • @adimifus
      @adimifus 8 лет назад +2

      +BoloYung While I don't necessarily agree with the original comment, you seem to be really picking and choosing things he said and taking them WAY out of context.
      He never said Nintendo INVENTED 3D. He said he felt Nintendo pioneered modern 3D gaming. Very different.
      The analog Genesis controller you speak of was an obscure third party controller. While the PS1 analog joystick came out shortly before the N64 launch, you had to buy it separately. DualShock controllers weren't included standard until well after the N64 launch. All N64 controllers had that functionality out of the box from launch-- that was the point he was trying to make. Although a number of systems you neglected to mention did this long before Sony, such as the 5200 and the Vectrex (and even the Odyssey!)
      It's clear you don't agree with what was said, but you don't have to twist and convolute what was said to try to make an argument. It only makes you look like the one who doesn't know what they're talking about. Getting facts straight also helps.

    I already have a N64, i want a Dreamcast, while i think the Dreamcast can be better, idk if i'll play a game there even more than i have played Super Mario 64, easily one of my favorite games of all time, i have been following Panenkoek tricks and trying to imitate them on console, with some nice results... so again, i'm biased, but i'll be acquiring a Dreamcast soon, even tho i have already played all the games i wanted because Steam and Gamecube.

    I'm personally a fan of the N64 except the stock controller and use a Superpad 64 Plus, and these days it's easier for me to find N64 games at decent prices then the Sega Dreamcast, but I do own a Dreamcast, and pick up games for it when I can find them at a good price out in the wild, which is not often, so my "official" collection is still kind of small lol!

    I tend to throw more along the line of Sega, but that doesn't mean I don't like Nintendo, I love the Gameboy Advance, Color, SP and the GameCube. I recently got my hands on an N64 console and am currently trying to get it to work. I have the Sega Genesis model 2 and a lot of Sega collection games made for later consoles like: PS2, PS3 and GameCube. All and all, you cannot go wrong with any of them. like Frank said, make your choice based on the game catalogs

    The thing about the N64 controller is that it feels great playing games like Mario 64, it feels as if the controller was designed for that game. When it comes to 3rd party games it often feels awkward. I can see Nintendo's thinking behind the design, the middle grip with the analog stick is for playing 3D games, and the left outer grip with the D-pad is meant for 2D games. The N64 had very few 2D games in the end, and the button placement wasn't really suitable for them. The analog stick is great when the controllers are new but without maintenance they eventually fail.

    LOL come on. I'm an N64 fanboy and even I can tell you the Dreamcast kicks the N64s ass :P There isn't really much of a comparison to be made. Dreamcast was the best console of its gen (technically I count it as N64/PS1 gen since it was released shortly after the N64 iirc and a few years before the PS2 and Gamecube, even though for some reason most people consider it gamecube gen?), it has great performance for the time, an excellent game library, internet connectivity, a mini console thing you can hook up to the controller. AND Windows (I think windows ME). How can you beat that? :D

      Dreamcast came out less than a year before the PS2. The Saturn came out like a year before the N64.
      Basically the Dreamcast belongs with the ps2/xbox/gamecube gen.

      Indeed, Plus the Dreamcast is very nearly on par with the ps2 in terms of power, In fact multiplats that existed for both systems almost always looked better on Dreamcast due it being an easier console to program for.

      it's kind of like an atari 5200 fiasco where its difficult to define its generation since it was launched at the end of one generation yet a bit too early for the beginning of the next. if you say it's fifth gen though, that means Sega released two entirely different consoles in the same generation which doesn't really fit the model but again, look at the 5200

    The N64 kind of doesn't hold up as most of its best games can be found elsewhere like pretty much almost every Rare game from that era via Rare Replay, or a remake like Ocarina of Time for the 3DS. Plus like pretty much anything Nintendo nowadays you're paying a premium for the real thing, since a lot of people want it, and sellers notice that.

    Has Sin & Punishment gone up? In the last year I think I bought the game for like $30 loose which is cheaper than I was expecting. I hadn't heard of Giga Wing until recently and now that's like a $100 game, and $150 for the second I think. :(
    The other "spaceship" shooters I know of on the N64 are Bangai-oh (Japanese, and the cart is over $100 loose), Dezaemon 3D and the only one I know to get a US release, Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth.

  • @kedishi

    I have both, but I find myself playing my Dreamcast more... I think it may be because I didn't play the N64 much when it was relevant, so I don't have the nostalgia with it I guess.
    Everyone I knew at the time had PlayStation, and I had my Saturn. I did eventually got a PlayStation, but I kinda wish I went for anN64 at the time instead.

  • @KoopaXross

    Dreamcast is very relevant now. Games are comng back online in droves now. Chu Chu Rocket and a boling game went online this summer. Because bad disc checking you can pirate Dreamcast games to all hell and back. I tend to avoid that, but in the case of Shenmue you have to go piracy route if you want a version with Japanese voices and English subs. If I get through and like I'll see if I can throw down dem bucks for a PAL Shenmue 2. My Dreamcast was modded by the last owner to work with games from all regions, then I tweaked the disc reader to make it work more consistently as it struggled with some regions still. It's a PAL Dreamcast at heart with the blue swirl.

      and you can play burned games on a bone stock dreamcast, so even if you dont like to pirate games you can use it to try games before you buy them as well as make back ups of your own games so you can keep the original safely stored away. you can also get a mod to play games from a sd card or ssd so you can keep your entire collection on it all the time. plus with the vga output dongle you can adapt it to hdmi to easily get a nice clean picture.

      Ripping GD Rom games is a non trivial task.
      The game files need to be modified extensively. Not a job for the average user. Easier to burn pre-modded ISOs taken off the net.
      Or do the SD card mod and load it with games, again, taken from the net.

    Coming from somebody who grew up the N64 & Gamecube (ex Nintendo fanboy), the Dreamcast is much better system. It has a more "arcadey" game library and plus it still gets new games. Plus alot of Dreamcast games have aged alot better than N64 games.

    DC wins hands down for the superior multiplat ports for that gen and it's first party and arcade titles (as short as they were). N64 DID have more long adventure games though I'll give it that (even though most were just one big long collect-a-thon) But everytime I see a person in the comments section of a Resident Evil games review that says the N64 version of RE2 was the best I'm just like, "Are you fucking KIDDING ME? Dreamcast version says Hello!" Yoda voice: "Eyes checked, you must get." Like, are they SERIOUSLY gonna tell me that the system that Debuted RE: Code Veronica has worse graphics than a system whose BEST looking game was Perfect Dark? CTFO..😩😆

      not sure i agree, it's better than the sega saturn at least, but the dreamcast and the ps1? i'm not so sure....
      i love ocarina, banjo, mario kart, and mario 64...
      but compared to ps1's libraries with all it's jrpg's, platformers, action games, gran turismo, just the number of games on ps1 is huge compared to the n64, plus the controller is infinitely better...
      and the dreamcast with soul calber, crazy taxi, skies of arcadia, phantasy star online, shenmue 1 and 2, sonic adventure 1 and 2, nights into dreams, space channel 5, jet set radio.
      the dreamcast was a beast... and the dreamcast's library is one of the reasons the gamecube was so great as they all got ported over for the most part...
