I'm in the sub tropics on the east coast of Australia. My main time for indoor drying is in our very humid, wet season. I use a fold up clothes airer that I place under a ceiling fan. Due to our low income, we are able to join a $5/yr charity food store. It gets the almost out of date food stores from all the local supermarkets and sells at very cheap prices. We get day old bread for free. Some foods that the supermarkets wont purchase from our local farmers, due to blemish or odd shapes, are donated and are available for free. I preserve as much as I can for use when those foods are out of season, like your frozen peppers. We have an extensive vegie garden which keeps us in salad veg and steamed green veg all year round. The extra work is well worth it. We live right on the coast so fish is abundant and readily available. Hubby loves a good deal and hunts them out. He picked up a 6.3kg whole rump for $60. At $10/kg, usually $20+/kg, this was a super deal. Hubby cut the rump up into meal size packages for us and these are now in the freezer. We have meat for months.

I live in Alberta, Canada and the weather has been unusually dry and mostly sunny. I moved here 20 years ago from Newfoundland, Canada where the weather tends to be mostly wet and overcast. I miss those rainy days so much! Nothing like a ‘mawsey’ day with the wood stove going, a pot of soup or baked beans cooking, and a good book to read by the stove. Perhaps with some fresh baked buns. Thank you for your lovely videos. I am always inspired to keep going!

    USA.
    1) Finally turned the heat on. Before that, I was wrapping up in many layers. Turned the heat on to 60°F. Don't know what that is C, but it's way too cold inside for most people.
    2) I only did one load of laundry, to keep the water and electricity bills down.
    3) I sold $45 worth of clothing and Christmas decorations.
    4) Saved $47 off grocery bill by putting things back.
    5) Didn't go out anywhere so no gasoline use.
    6) Found I had enough cat litter at home not to have to buy it for at least a month.
    7) Used up canned tomato sauce to make spaghetti sauce (put my own spices in it).
    8) Bought some new spices at a discount grocery.
    9) Put an extra blanket on the bed.
    10) Put on fleece lined slippers and boots to wear.
11)Wire fingerless gloves before I turned on the heat.
    12) Turn the electricity off to the stove while I'm not using it by turning it off at the breaker box.

@@FrugalQueeninFrance Well, thank you! I've been frugal my whole life. I came to be this way by listening to my grandparents who raised their children during the Great Depression in the U.S. and through WW11, and from listening to my parents who grew up during the Great Depression and WW11. Frugality is in my bones!

I set my self a challenge at the beginning of the year not to buy any new clothes and I have stuck to it,only buying things from charity shops. I will definitely do a weekly menu plan. I think that will cut down the food bill and prevent so much wastage. Cant wait for your next video x

So i do something slightly odd/controversial but highly effective for heating/cooling. i use pet mats, those wipeable padded mats that they use for animals to sleep on. they have ones that keep them warm and ones that cool.
The cooling ones i use mostly because in Australia our summers are horrible. you can get larger mats you can put under your bed sheets that help regulate your body temp.

I live in Kansas in the United States. I hang clothes on the line unless it’s raining or snowing. If it’s raining, I’ll wait. If it rains multiple times a week, I wait. Sometimes I will hang things up in the house to dry if I get desperate. We use propane heat and have one stove for the entire house and it gets very chilly. Sometimes it’s downright cold. If it’s too cold,I bake some thing to try to warm up part of the house.

Hi Jane, I love your videos so thank you! I live on the south coast of England (Littlehampton) and try to live frugally. Today I made butternut squash and ginger soup for lunch, and a banana bread as we had some over-ripe bananas which would otherwise have been chucked out. The soup was made with the squash, onions and garlic all from our allotment so very frugal. We also have pumpkins at the moment but I was changing it up a bit! For dinner I had the leftovers from a Chinese takeaway we ordered last night (not frugal but our once a month treat) so my meal was free. My partner had something from the freezer as he doesn’t like leftovers (that’s what he thinks anyway, ignorance is bliss 😂). X

It does seem that food is more expensive in France than here in blighty. It's not as though you had lots of different cheeses or wine. It makes no sense when most of the food in the UK is imported. I think all those cookery programmes suggest that there is an abundance of cheap fresh produce in places like Europe.

    • @FrugalQueeninFrance

Thankfully water, council tax, houses themselves, going on holiday, clothes, wine (that we rarely drink) are cheaper. Cars are three times the price in France too.

Another good video- always enjoy them. Have you thought about potting up your parsley And bring it inside to grow on a window sill? We usually pot up a few of our hot pepper plants and herbs before frost - we’ve had some luck keeping them going all winter long. We’re going to try a couple bell pepper plants as well. Once frost pass in the spring we take them back outside for the growing season

Heating? Well firstly I closed off the chimney in the other room. My other fire place provides heat, hot water and I too use my clothes horse ( x 2). I did my own energy audit, you know the drill. Crock pot over oven where possible, then if the oven is on, extra garlic bread, fridge, extra scones, freezer, large chicken, sandwiches or stir fry etc. Curtains inside rads, hot water bottles, socks, layers, chopped our own kindling and blocks and timber over the summer, got offered pallets and got my 19 year old busy before he falls into his PC. TV in my bedroom instead of sitting in a cold livingroom, super cosy. Plenty hot drinks. One other thing. I usually ask for jewellery or perfume for Christmas..not this year. I actually asked for a pair of really fleeced lines slippers..the type that turn into booties. 12.99 euro, navy with sparkly bits, and not slip for the tiles in the rain...closed backs, heaven..yeah..Im getting old girl..lol

We can use coal on it if we wish to keep it lit during the night. Clothes are dried by it and I love it. It only takes a minute to light and we clean the fire and chimney ourselves. This week?..let me see..I took in an emergency dog sit for 24 hours ( adorable)..50 euro, I cut my mans hair, I gratefully received 2 bags of clothes and got 8 x dresses and 26 tops, really good pieces. I also went to a thrift store and got a black and stainless steel globe for my sons Christmas present 5 euro very fancy piece. Bought a new bra ( labels on ) and a pink fleece cardigan all for 6 euro. Cooked a fry up so we wouldn't have to eat out, filled the crock pot before leaving. Let my son actually use his bus pass ( 55 euro, he pays himself) instead of me collecting him from one of our local towns, told him I'd ask for petrol money otherwise. Hmmm, Got my better half to clean the chimney with our own rods ( 60 euro per chimney ) and he fixed the leg on my ironing board, I'm not buying a new one, hammered the car insurance down by 120 euro. And if anyone is interested..I'm not doing a frugal Christmas, I'm doing a free Christmas with the lidl app....hows that?

Great video! I love seeing everything at the recycling center. There is so much nice stuff available there.
I’m cooking more from scratch and simple meals to keep my food budget under control.
I pressure canned chicken breasts a few months ago in half pint jars. I was craving Chicken alá King so in less than 10 minutes with some pantry staples I had a yummy lunch.
I used a couple of jars of chicken, a small jar of diced pimentos, a small can of sliced mushrooms along with some whole milk to make the sauce. I used some Ultra Gel to thicken it because it won’t separate like using corn starch can when it chills in the refrigerator. I have plenty left for several meals this week.
I like to serve it on toast as an open faced sandwich but it could be served over rice or noodles.
You always have great meal ideas, I hoping to get some fried fish made tomorrow afternoon. I don’t fry fish in the house, it makes the house stink too much.
I fry my fish in a large cast iron skillet on my patio. I take my induction burner out and set it up on the table, plug it in and fry my fish outside.
Yummy Battered fried fish and no stinky house afterwards! 😏

Rainy days means clean those corners that get left because the weather is too nice to worry about those corners, repair clothing or work on sewing projects, read a book and wash the clothes in cold water. Most of our clothes go in the dryer when it rains and a few get hung up on our portable drying rack. I usually make soups on those cold rainy days--yum.

Hello from Pennsylvania in the US.
I am new to your channel and love your videos.
My husband and I are retired. We have 2 grown daughters and a grandson in university and a granddaughter in high school.
My brother lives with us and helps me as my husband has some health issues
Our home is heated with natural gas as is my hot water boiler and my oven and cooker. t
The cost averages out to about 50 euros a month. Very economical by American standards.
My brother and I go to the market once a month although we may need a quick trip for milk or bread in between.
We also have a dog Stewie and the average cost for the 4 of us is about 150 euros. My brother and I will each have an overflowing trolley (the cost is for the total of both together)
We eat well and healthy. I am fortunate to live in an area where groceries are affordable and we can stock ahead for winter so we are not out in bad weather
Our basement is warm and I hang my clothes to dry down there.

We have soup for lunch every day during the cooler months. Basically carrots, red lentils, stock and spices, puréed. Soup costs next to nothing. It’s versatile and filling. I’ve also been making meat-free ‘sausage rolls’ , experimenting with different fillings such as fried mushroom and leek, mashed beans etc …again, whatever you have! I add breadcrumbs if the mix is too wet, add some grated cheese or nuts, herbs and seasoning for flavour. Thankyou for your brilliant channel. We don't usually have problems drying the washing. I'll dry a white wash in the sun to get the clothes even whiter and a coloured wash in the shade so the colours don't fade.
Here in Spain prices have gone up. I shop at Mercadona (The Spanish equivalent to Morrisons supermarket in the UK). We never used to spend more than 50€ a week for the two of us, now we're lucky if it's less than 70€ !!!

I just put it on for an hour or so at night luckily I have one side of my home is south facing and if the sun is shining this helps to warm the place. Over night I put my laundry in the kitchen on an airer this helps enormously. But it's easy for me in a single person household but it must be a nightmare if you have several children. Thank you the vlog would love to visit a ti recup the quality and variety is very impressive .

I'd like to share one way of drying more clothes on a rack and it was a godsend, not having as much space to dry everything.
Wire Coat hangers are great space savers when pegging
up socks underwear trousers dresses etc this leaves more room to hang other clothing such as tea towels flannels from one corner of the item.
    Anyway you get my drift.....

Another great video Jane, thank you. Iv not long subscribed so been catching up on yr channel. One thing we do, is to have each month certain jobs we do. As i'm disabled l cant do full spring cleaning all in one go, so each month we 'spring clean' one room at a time for that month. November is our 2 Bedrooms deep clean , declutter etc. l usually give each room a refresh at the same time with any little crafts iv made or a little charity shop find or move a few pieces of furniture around after its deep clean. The guest room is then all ready for any visitors. The next month of December is my busy month freezer cooking in the first 2 weeks. Then January is the Kitchen 'spring clean'. and so on, for the rest of year for each room and garden. It stops me getting worn out, the jobs are done and we dont get over whelmed like we would if we tried to do the house all in one go.

Is it less expensive for you to buy lasagna than to make it? I would think making a large pan of it then portioning it and freezing it would save $$$ . Your tortillas look delicious. I live in Arizona so from November to the end of May we don't need heat. The weather is gorgeous here. I do a load of laundry about each day, usually because we swim most nights, so there is always at least a small load to do. It's easy to keep up on it for my family of 3. I do use my washer and dryer, but also have a drying rack. Our electric bill in the winter and spring is only about $55 USD. All of our lights are leds. I have all of the usual kitchen appliances, but like to use my counter top convection oven often. We also enjoy grilling outside, tfs 🍃🍂🍁🌞🌛🦃🥰✝️🥧😃🙏🧡🌲🍃🍂🍁🌞🌛🦃🥰✝️🥧😃🙏🧡🌲

Hello Jane and Michael from Ontario, Canada. Thanks to you I have been faithfully menu planning for the past 3 weeks and sticking to once a week grocery shopping. It really helps! I'm trying to make more meatless meals to save on grocery costs. I made my own version of greens, lentils and butternut squash after seeing your pic on FB last week - it was delicious! Butter is the same price here I believe with the conversion of Euros to CAD. It's $4.99/lb now at the cheapest grocery store - up from $3.99. That's a 20% increase - crazy!

Super video Jane, great editing by Mick. Here is Yorkshire it is cold wet and wild, Leggings under my jeans extra socks in my winter slippers(which are roomy enough to allow this). Extra layer on top of my fleece, I have a couple of jumpers which are a size too big and fit well over my normal fleece or jumper. Fleece blanket over my legs when I am sat about. Not had the central heating on yet this year but I don’t think that is going to be the case for much longer. I put 2 water bottles in my bed an hour before I go to bed so that even if my bedroom is not heated my bed is already nice and warm. I now have porridge for breakfast for a warm start, thick homemade soup for lunch which is again warming. I put a casserole in the slow cooker in the morning which gives me another warming meal in the evening. I make enough to do at least 2 nights and maybe even a meal. One pot meals are easy to do, keeps cooking costs down and can be cooking its self while I am out at work. Long slow cooking allows me to use cheaper cuts of meat that need long slow cooking and can be bulked out with extra winter vegetables which again keeps the cost down. On cold winters nights I go to bed early with a book or to watch tv or a movie on my laptop while snuggling down under the quilt.

My mum sewed and knit to keep us all well clothed and could make a meal out of nothing to keep us all fed. I wish she was around these days to give us all her wisdom. When you are young you don’t take much notice of how your mum makes the money go round and with a full time job mum didn’t have much free time to impart her knowledge to us all. I sometimes sit and try to remember how she did it on what must have been a very small budget.
