MAD MD-82 Nearly Runs Out of Runway at Newcastle Airport

  • A crazy departure out of Newcastle Airport by this ALK Airlines MD-82 heading to Burgas Airport on behalf of Balkan Holidays. (Skip to 5:11 for the takeoff roll)
    Interestingly the takeoff distance at the airport was reduced by around 100m due to a defect being found near the entrance to the runway at D1.
    As you see the MD-82 was guided onto the runway following a follow-me vehicle which took the aircraft around the defect and lined up on the runway.
    This rare McDonnell Douglas MD-82 LZ-ADV was delivered originally to Alitalia on the 21st of December 1990 to Alitalia as I-DACS.

    Newcastle airport is my favourite airport in the world. It is small, but large enough that you have everything you need in it. The connection into town is perfect, I also LOVE walking to/from the plane. All other larger airports have no character, NCL definitely still has that.

    • @bmc9504
      @bmc9504 5 лет назад +1

      Walking to and from a plane is basically in every airport in the UK rain or snow depending on the airline. Also how do you define character? Heathrow is basically old and new(love it) and so is Birmingham, Manchester isn't bad either. Slightly confused.

    • @vickythecat1741
      @vickythecat1741 5 лет назад +1

      @@bmc9504 I was talking about all the large airports in the world like Dubai, the new Istanbul airport, Atlanta etc. Smaller airports simply have more charm, to me, personally. Opinions differ, this is simply my opinion and feeling. I also love BHX. Heathrow is one chaotic airport though, especially when transferring between different airlines.

    Air traffic control: How much runway do you need?
    Pilot: Yes

    • @ihmcallister
      @ihmcallister 5 лет назад +1

      I'm retired ATC. The speed V1 is calculated as the point at which you can stop safely. After that Vr (rotate) and V2 (lift-off) speeds are calculated. If the runway is long enough to get airborne, assuming an engine shuts down after V1, you have enough runway, simple as that. This is a case of the telephoto foreshortening the view, and making the available length at take off appear less than it is. No dramas there.

    I flew with Emirates 777-300 out of there. We only used up half the runway. I'm guessing that's due to only being partially fuelled and having giant wings.

      I would not argue against a longer runway haha.

  • @mizzyroro
    @mizzyroro 5 лет назад

    Do you know why this is a difficult takeoff. If he is heavy his rotation speed will be high and for a short runway he will want to get it up pretty quickly because the runway end is approaching fast. However, because he is heavy, he risks a stall, if he pulls the nose up too fast.

    • @JonathanWinton123
      @JonathanWinton123  4 года назад

      Also they had a little less runway to use due to work near the threshold.

  • @time.5316
    @time.5316 5 лет назад

    Well, all you can do is run the numbers and trust they're right. And if the inputs of weight, elevation, temp and wind are correct (which is your job as the pilot to make sure are right), then you CAN trust the aircraft manual's takeoff performance numbers to be right. Nice work on this video, BTW.

    Hard to judge how much of that runway before wheels lifted off the tarmac, dramatic nonetheless. I lament the gradual disappearance of these beauties from our skies in the U.S. American will retire the entire fleet this September, while Delta will continue flying them a little longer. MD-80s may have a nostalgic flair with some, but if you live anywhere near an airport that uses Delta Air Lines, you will learn to hate the noise these make compared to modern airliners. Yes, I know these are quieter than 727s, DC-9s but they are very noisy by 2019 standards. Wish Delta would retire these faster than they are doing now.
