This is why real adventure riders are going more and more for middle and lightweight bikes with more agility and less power. Adventure bikes belong in the wilderness, not on a track and the more track ready they become, the less off road capable they become at the same time. They become more work and less fun except on dry, well surfaced roads. BMW is selling more and more of their middleweight bikes and now with the G310GS people are going to start working with that platform. Rally Raid already makes a full off-road conversion kit for it. You are somehow right on the off road capabilities and adequacy for RTW trips, a lighter weight bike will save you much trouble and make your life much easier. However, this "arms race" between the big trail bikes, IMO, started in earnest with the 2010 Ducati multistrada, who dared put a superbike engine in a trail bike, and the ms is such a magnificent bike, it would be a crying shame if it hadn't existed. I tell you, I have a multistrada, (my 5th big bike after my 1st ever, a 125cc Casal), I just can't put words to how much fun this bike is. KTM's are a bit more unstable at high speeds. Longer suspension travel and conventional forks/shocks (compared to para/telelever) are more setting-sensitive than BMW's setup. Had both types (990R vs 1200GS).

That’s cool and all, but ride them from Virginia to Oregon and then tell me which you’d rather be on. Beamers can add miles to your days. I’m not sure I could tolerate 12 plus hours on the KTM (stock ergonomics on both bikes)
I do know DriveMag love BMW e.e, however even If the KTM is powerful the exhaust sound sucks really hard, both bikes are great I can say, but this BMW is awesome
I love both bikes and both companies. If you bought either of these machines and thought you missed out on something actually measurable, you would have probably been happy with a Tenere. Gs is the category definition of what a premium ADV is and KTM meets that quota and chooses to stretch it a little
Nice video, good review of the differences between the bikes. There was an italian website doing the same test including a Ducati Multistrada 1260, all with the same tyres. Of course the Multi it was faster than the other two on a track, but KTM was slightly slower than BMW in that occasion. Then they made a race starting all from the same line: BigK got 200m by the first turn. Amazing. Oh, by the way: KTM rules, always! XD
I drive the SA 1290 as a daily driver and it works perfect and if you have the possibility to go full goon this bike is absolutely the best in its category

Another great video. Thanks, guys! I do enjoy these comparisons. It would seem here that you certainly can't go wrong with either bike. So it really comes down to personal preference. Personally I lean towards the KTM, but that is just me!
I love your content but I don't think these two bikes are meant for spirited riding or racing. We already have so many segments of bikes that are made just to do that, super-naked's, hyper-naked's, super bikes, hyper bikes, track only bikes like the HP4 and so on. Most people buy the GS, Tiger, SAR or Multistrada for crossing continents. Still if you wanted you could have brought the BMW S1000XR, which competes directly with the 1290. Just my two cents, not hating in any way. Keep up the great work!
Amrit Swain i dont agree. I have seen a lot of people on these that ride fast and shoot past guys on full race bikes on the street. Even though they are going fast as well. Talking to a lot of riders on these, they are former or still circuit racers but their body just cant handle the driving position on those anymore. That is why they got one of those. So they like it that they still can go fast on these bikes.
The XR competes with the Ducati Multistrada and other street going motorcycles with a 17 inch front wheel... the Super Adventure, with its 19 inch front wheel directly competes with the GS...
Great compare guys - really nice ride and drone footage - would be fun to compare these again this time with the same track day tires and push them a bit - I often group ride with my RR rider brothers and have been able to keep them in site with my R1200GSA with Metzeler's Karoo Streets (very sticky & precise - though very short-lived rear) - always amazed at how well the GS handles with good tires! Currently testing Michelin's new Anakee Adventures (very sticky though less precise, handles rocks better off-road though) Again, thanks so much for all you do!
I owned the 1290S but decided to traded it for the R1250GS. I miss the 1290S, it is way, way quicker and turns on a dime. The R1250 is more than enough power, but I like the suspension way better. The 1290S suspension is pretty firm, but it is the perfect bike if you are chasing your friends (or leading them) around the mountains. I think even faster and more comfortable than the Multistrada (1290S). If you are doing multi-day trips, you will probably like the R1250GS more. My experience and opinions :)
I love the Beemer for it's outstanding touring comfort and all around credentials... it really is good at almost everything (it's what I rent when I'm in the Germany and the weather is good enough for riding)... but it's not fast like the KTM is fast. The Beemer runs out of breath too early - right when my Multistrada is just getting into the power the Beemer is going flat and asking you to shift, (and the KTM is very close to the 1260 Multi... bit stronger in the midrange where the Multi is strong off idle and at the top end). The Beemer is actually right with them at the low and into the start of the midrange... but after that it's goodbye GS.
I own a KTM adventure and agree about track times or even off road prowess. The GS wins in the resale and comfort. I love my Adventure but you can't ride it easy and kick back. It is a high maintenance beast that hates going slow.
These Bikes are not made for Track , I think The Review should be on the Handling and Functionality and not flat out speed . Take it off road and it would be beneficial for your audience. Thank you.
We also did a touring/functionality review last year. But since everybody's curios about their performance, we also took them on circuit. Of course, we'll be back with a complete test to include everything - from track to every-day use.
@@DriveMagRiders It was entertainjng to watch, thanks guys. It's a shame that some people get so upset and worked up over what is essentially just a fun video!! Interesting . Fun video . I think I would buy the BMW . I don’t really care about speed and quickness with a bike like this . I wouldn’t even take it off road. I would set it up with different tires for long highway rides . Thanks guys.
A GS isn't actually made for "racing" purposes that's not what it is designed for. That's why they keep the hp low to. Ofcourse they need to listen to the customers so that's why they increased it and made it faster over time. if u want to go really sporty with a GS, buy an XR
That test is irrelevant for adventure riders, in the real world with those bikes what is important is low mid range, nobody gets an adventure bike to do track days.
How is it irrelevant?? If you are going to purchase a adventure bike why would you not want to know how it performs on asphalt? If you just want a off road bike go with a dual sport or dirt bike, an adventure bike is the best of both worlds, and if im going to purchase one I want the best and fastest street, and most aggressive off road.
KTM are also very good offroad. If you haven’t seen the KTM Australia rally (especially the 2018 Outback), I highly recommend it. 200+ amateur riders going places you simply couldn’t take a GS...very hard offroad sections with big rocks that I know none of my 3 GS would have survived
No they're not. There is a lot of difference in HP. Put the BMW xr1000 up against the ktm and see....It's a closer comparison. I like ktm, I have 2 of them.
I considered both recently, but KTM’s after sales, service is appalling where BMW’s is amazing, so went with the GSA 1250 HP. If I wanted a speed bike, I would’ve got another......
Please make an comparison this year with the new Multistrada V4, KTM Super adventure S, BMW GS1250 and the upcoming H-D Pan America. This would be an awesome test 🙏🏼
Initially I was going to buy the BMW but due to the local dealer's terrible presales service I decided to look at options. I am down to 3 bikes - the KTM1290, the BMW R1250 and the Africa twin. I live in Vancouver and service is a big one for me. The local BMW dealer (there is only one) is terrible. Complaints are numerous and they seem more motivated by $$$ than they do in helping customers. They dont even allow test rides. This alone may knock BMW of the running. I am glad I watched this because the BMW is an expensive bike with average performance and the local service is abysmal plus I will never buy a bike I cant test ride.
I knew it was the one with the glasses the test pilot !! Two magnificent maxitrail bikes and overall compared to other mounts. Bestial the KTM and BMW: the Austrian is like a good diamond and the German like another good diamond but, more polished and detailed with respect to its design and throughout the bike, especially in every detail of each piece that is at a level of premium. Is BMW the same polished diamond in its mechanics compared to the KTM?
In my books, the KTM, which is 24 hp more, 47cc bigger, and 14 kg lighter, the looser here. Simple if you equal the hp as the KTM has and weight to the BMW, who do you think will be faster around the track.
well mate...i am a bimmer fan actually and i am pretty happy with the results. None of these bikes are made for trucks. Speed, dynos, timers are not for these bikes... This test would fit better between an s100 xr and a Ducati multistrada i think...
@@andreasargiriadis6125 Nothing personal my friend. Love the BMW GS too but a KTM Knicks it for me purely because it's a BEAST!! BMWs are more relaxed I guess. To each unto his own 😉
Each to their own.. but I didn't really absorb this video as seeing two adventure bikes on a race track with a dude in full race leathers... kinda missed the point of these bikes and what I was looking for... But again, I guess each to their own. :)
Interesting comparison, however being ADVENTURE (not racing) monster bikes, I'd be more interested to know how they both perform on a NORMAL on-road and off-road ride. And not really interested to know how much maximum power a bike may give you at 9K RPM, but rather how much and HOW IT'S BEING DELIVERED that power at a normal usage RPM (up to 4-5K). Anyways, thanks for sharing this video.
I don't see the value in track riding them, their value is blasting down autobahns and freeways, as both only have application off-road, in the hands of the capable few, who can handle these heavy machines, when the going gets tough!!
Really none of both bike are meant for track racing, so I would rather compare them for what they are designed for; long distance travel. Anyway thanks for your video
Why not? I’m a girl, I own ktm sas 1290 and I’m planning to take it to the track. I cannot afford owning two bikes. It’s a very relevant test I enjoy watching!
An italian channel did a similar test with the multistrada also. The result was a ktm and bmw very close. I think it is interesting. The reaction you described are the same but probably the bikes are sensitive to tires and track. Interesting for enduros. I love this tests.
Before I even knew the result, I knew the austrian was faster than the Berliner. That's just the way it feels. Also true is that the KTM feels a bit twitchier at high speeds. Both bikes' supensions feel tremendous and with its latest 2019 tweaks, KTM finally caught up to BMW's ultra nice blend of comfort and performance. To people saying the KTM should be put against the Multi 1260 and the S1000XR, I disagree. They look only at max power and performance, but the thing is the KTM 1290 can still really be used as a trail bike. You can take that thing (I have the 1190 but the argument stays) on the autobahn and blast like a big, and then stop and take a single track trail between rocks and logs, which is something you'd never do on the Multi (not enduro) or the S1000XR (which I even preferred engine wise to my KTM, but is quickly getting you scared even on light off-road stuff)
Great video. It’s good to know stats like the ones you’ve produced here. The KTM IS the faster bike which I think we all suspected. I’m concerned with all the issues the KTM is having especially with the electronics. Ive been monitoring several KTM, BMW and ADV Facebook pages. The majority of the GS owners are posting about their newest farkle while most of the posts for the KTM seem to be about their frustrations with dealing with their dealer about another issue with their bike. I want to love the KTM but if I were going to pull the trigger on one of these bike I’d go with the GS due to its reliability. Although time will tell how the shift cam works long term.
Shifter on my '17 1200GS Rallye is same, doesnt like to go next gear above about 5500rpm. Have to clutch it everytime. Full torque is at closer to 6700-6800rpm should be where you can quick shift. Sounds like they havent fixed that deficiency in this model either.
Did he have the BMW on Endurance mode, bliper - quick shift, try using that in the winter in Scotland. People buy these bikes and hide them in there garage. I have a BMW GS Rally TE and it got me back into ryding after 10 years. I had a Susuki GXSR 600 ex track bike. Me too. I’ve had 3 GS, and I really like them, but I knew even the updated 1250 would get smashed.
That’s cool and all, but ride them from Virginia to Oregon and then tell me which you’d rather be on.
Beamers can add miles to your days. I’m not sure I could tolerate 12 plus hours on the KTM (stock ergonomics on both bikes)
Great reviews guys. Thank you.
Both are fantastic bikes. In the end the difference is also a matter of personal taste. There is no wrong decision.
You are great! Greeting fro Serbia.. next review kawasaki versys 1000 se 2019😉
Verseys 1000 is a sports tourer not an adventure Tourer.
And Verseys 1000 is shit.
Gs is the category definition of what a premium ADV is and KTM meets that quota and chooses to stretch it a little
That was entertaining and informative. Top shelf content guys. Cheers from America 🇺🇸
wish I could give more thumbs up, really good stuff
Nice video, good review of the differences between the bikes. There was an italian website doing the same test including a Ducati Multistrada 1260, all with the same tyres. Of course the Multi it was faster than the other two on a track, but KTM was slightly slower than BMW in that occasion.
Then they made a race starting all from the same line: BigK got 200m by the first turn. Amazing.
Oh, by the way: KTM rules, always! XD
Sure not !
Sure not
I drive the SA 1290 as a daily driver and it works perfect and if you have the possibility to go full goon this bike is absolutely the best in its category
Agree completely
Nice review, enjoying your channel. Hello from USA
Nice video guys! Always good to see you :)
a good bike can perform best almost everywhere, with a best rider and thats ktm.
Ktm ready to race!
BMW ready to cafeteria !🇬🇷😃🇬🇷😂

yes you are right, BMW is always the first in the service:) KTM the best.
Another great video. Thanks, guys! I do enjoy these comparisons. It would seem here that you certainly can't go wrong with either bike. So it really comes down to personal preference. Personally I lean towards the KTM, but that is just me!
Man, you are doing awesome job. I wached and the other videos you made. They perfect...

As Always, very good comparative test.
Good job guys.
Yeah, am I missing something, what difference does it make who's faster on the track?
I like your reviews guys! Good job! Greetings from Ukraine!
👏🎉😉🔥
Compare BMW F 850 GSA and Triumph 800 xca !!
Love these guys videos, exciting, clear and informative, from keen enthusiasts 🤔 experts in the field of bikes! Keep it up 👍
I own a KTM adventure and agree about track times or even off road prowess. The GS wins in the resale and comfort.
I love my Adventure but you can't ride it easy and kick back. It is a high maintenance beast that hates going slow.
Closer than I expected.
Pinky121971 looks like you know nothing about this channel
@@DriveMagRiders It was entertainjng to watch, thanks guys. It's a shame that some people get so upset and worked up over what is essentially just a fun video!! Yes, the race track is not on the top spot of both bikes design brief, but I personally spank any bike I own in any setting so I enjoyed it lol.......jeez get over it and take a breath people...
Bravo fratilor sunteti cei mai tari nu oricine își permite sa puna mana pe pe asa motoare
Interesting . Fun video . I think I would buy the BMW . I don’t really care about speed and quickness with a bike like this . I wouldn’t even take it off road. I would set it up with different tires for long highway rides . Thanks guys.
I am the KTM owner, but the comparison is a bit unfair. KTM is on alloys, BMW is on spokes.
Care to explain what do alloy wheels have over tubeless spoked wheels ? 🤔
JIGA BACHI
1. Alloys are higher torsional stiffness => better handling
2. Allows are lower unsprung mass => better handling
3. Better handling => faster lap time
@@EvilChem1st 👌
A GS isn't actually made for "racing" purposes that's not what it is designed for. That's why they keep the hp low to. Ofcourse they need to listen to the customers so that's why they increased it and made it faster over time. if u want to go really sporty with a GS, buy an XR
Now you can go round the world faster.
Faster, power, KTM. Comfort and less
money on the bank account, BMW:
Thank you guys much appreciated
Nice video. Big fan from Brazil.
That test is irrelevant for adventure riders, in the real world with those bikes what is important is low mid range, nobody gets an adventure bike to do track days.
I do. I ride a 1290 Super Adventure (2016). And I do trackdays. Checkout my video.
The BMW is built for comfortable. KTM is a beast for those serious about all out power.
@@ronanrogers4127
Agree the KTM’s roots are in motocross and dirt orientation. The GS/GSA more about road comfort.
BMW = king of marketing
No they're not. There is a lot of difference in HP. Put the BMW xr1000 up against the ktm and see....It's a closer comparison. I like ktm, I have 2 of them.
Prof. King of Adventure Bikes.
I considered both recently, but KTM’s after sales, service is appalling where BMW’s is amazing, so went with the GSA 1250 HP.
If I wanted a speed bike, I would’ve got another......
Ducati Multistrada probably is the fastest one.
@@renatooi88 funnily enough, I’ve since chopped in for an S1000XR

A great review 👍🏻
Please make an comparison this year with the new Multistrada V4, KTM Super adventure S, BMW GS1250 and the upcoming H-D Pan America.
This would be an awesome test 🙏🏼
Thanks. That was entertaining - those 13 minutes disappeared so quickly! 😊👍
I think he is the same guy cager on two wheels
Very valueable test. Everybody wanted to know how the big Tourers are on a racetrack….
You need a faster drone.
I hear there’s a pretty cheap one in Iran in need of a little TLC.
LOL!
Bravo ! Felicitari din Belgia
Yup, we’re now racing adventure bikes for lap times to see which is faster. This is funny! hahahaha
As always,thks guys.
Low oil pressure warning on ktm toward end of ride... fin issue even in my 390
It says tyre pressure front low not oil pressure from what I can see
As always excellent 👍🏼
Great work guys
Which One is Faster?
the best time lap : KTM - 2.4... , Bmw - 2.8... (around 4 seconds difference)
If the BMW comes with shaft drive as it should then that is the deal maker for me.
48 Beemer fans are JUST NOT HAPPY!! Awesome KTM! :D :D
well mate...i am a bimmer fan actually and i am pretty happy with the results. None of these bikes are made for trucks. Speed, dynos, timers are not for these bikes... This test would fit better between an s100 xr and a Ducati multistrada i think...

Each to their own.. but I didn't really absorb this video as seeing two adventure bikes on a race track with a dude in full race leathers... kinda missed the point of these bikes and what I was looking for...
But again, I guess each to their own. :)
What about service and fixing and reliability ???? And also the material
Let's see one with both bikes kitted out properly. Knobbies, panniers, crash bars, etc, just for kicks.
Love your work.👏👍
I don't see the value in track riding them, their value is blasting down autobahns and freeways, as both only have application off-road, in the hands of the capable few, who can handle these heavy machines, when the going gets tough!!
Really none of both bike are meant for track racing, so I would rather compare them for what they are designed for; long distance travel.
Anyway thanks for your video
Christian Mouraux you right my friend !
Useless video
Why not? I’m a girl, I own ktm sas 1290 and I’m planning to take it to the track. I cannot afford owning two bikes. It’s a very relevant test I enjoy watching!
I like your "home made style" of production👍. Stay humble and honest !😎👌
Berliner 🤬👹🔫
I love my BMW, it's a great go to work all year round bike, it's very comfortable to ride, after all who test rides an adventure bike on a race track, trol trollo.???
