- A first look at the Carenado Piper PA-28 Archer II in Microsoft Flight Simulator - taking it for a quick flight from Boonville to Cloverdale in the US. Along the way we try out some of the avionics, do some stall tests, and have some fun.
Wonderful little plane.

I used to own a PA-28 and was very impressed at how stable it was in the air. I picked up this plane for MSFS the other day and was suitably impressed. It feels like the actual plane. The lack of an autopilot is not a problem as it's incredibly easy to hand fly.
Yep - it really is very, very easy.
Yep flew the Archer TX which is a new model all glass and that thing is rock stable compared to the C172s I flew!
Carenado is simply an excellent developer of GA aircraft. For high quality aircraft at a fair price, it's hard to go wrong. As you pointed out in this video, this aircraft is impressive both inside and out. I can put a lot of hours flying all over the place with this plane and enjoying every minute of it. Oh and the thumbnail, looks real.
I tend to re-crop the thumbnails and tidy them up so they look nice :)
thanks for this brief review. this surely will be my next purchase for the flightsim.
maybe carenado does not build the most realistic aircrafts, but they look just wonderful and since I don't fly on vatsim or other online communities and I just fly to relax after a day at the office to cool down its not such a big deal for me (nevertheless I also love the P28 line of just flight)
I just like those old fashioned steam gauge cockpits since I did my first "lessons" in the build in "flight school" with the C152.
I've had watch quite a few of your reviews and guides and wanted to give you a thank you as it often was helpful and I like your calm kind of presentation.
Thanks for being one of the first ones to review this new aircraft!
Totally agree Carenado look so much like a picture.
The PA28 flaps are mechanical so move instantly, in real world you don't taxi with flaps extended, start with fuel pump on and put it on for take off and landings. You do run up and take off checks prior to departure, check left, right and both magnetos. No flaps needed for normal take off, only short field departure. Rotate about 85mph.
I'm really enjoying this, lovely flying and a great airplane 😊👍
Many thanks!
@@jonbeckett My pleasure 😊
I used to fly the Piper Archer and loved. The video was enjoyable to watch. Next time you take this bird up and want to do an aileron role turn the fuel pump on first and see if that helps with the engine.
Uh another GA classic, a true beauty inside! Only in the older days they made such beautyful cockpits instead of "cheaping out and as much purism as possible" design idea. This thing will be an absolute beauty when flying in VR.
It does look good :)
The aircraft looks good. I'll certainly get it for my X-Box flight sim..
I want the Archer 3 which is the one we use for training at my university. This is a very welcome addition though.
Really enjoying this 👌🏻. And a great price
It's a great plane.
It’s actually very cute ! I always liked these basic aircrafts, hand flying is really fun ! Would be even better without GPS :)
I totally agree with you. 👍🏼
Great video.Thanks.These do spin quite well depending on fuel/weights.Not sure about now but in the 70s spin recovery was part of the PPL test. Incidentally what you call a compass was known as a DI which you correctly adjusted to match the real compass reading.
Directional giro = direction indicator (at least in my head) :)
Spin recovery training was not allowed during my flight training in the early 2000's. I learned to fly in a Piper Cadet and did my final check ride in a Piper Warrior. Very very familiar in these Pipers 😁
I flew a cherokee. Pretty much same. But i tried stalling it. It’s very hard
Nice plane and good review of it. I think I will be picking it up soon. Sounds like your getting over your cold. Mine lasted about 3 weeks. Not fun, thak care.
Yeah - the cold/cough has been hanging on.
Fire en commrnt...good one
Just a heads up with the click spot to return the tablet to its pocket. It felt like to me like the click spot was wonky but I found if I held the button in it worked everytime. Thanks for the review! I bought it and like it. A lot. :)
Good to know!
On the fence with this one, lots of these planes already released going to watch your video and see what makes it better than the others
It's just a bit of variety really.
Hi, Thank you for your video (and YT channel), I'm a french pilot but follow you for the quality of your video. I've a quick question: in Little nav map, what is the theme used in this video (appx 6:09) ? Thank you.
This will be interesting, just started watching. Wonder if I need one more GA, it looks good, though
I thought the same (for about 30 seconds) lol
Damn Jonathon - you're a video production machine! 😂✊🏻
I had a night with little else going on for a change :)
Beautiful video and good commentary, just clicked the subscribe button. I cannot really tell all those pipers apart. Is there some significant difference to the Just Fligh Warrior II?
I'll have to get back in the Warrior to tell you. Doesn't the Warrior have an autopilot? The Archer II doesn't.
Do you use a bluetooth keyboard? Mine turns off after a certain time and it freezes the sim when it reconnects.
I hope A2Ac172 will come to MSFS soon.
I've got the Just Flight Piper Warriors and Arrow. This is similar but you get a crude autopilot with the other models.
You do :) The JustFlight is the Arrow III - this is the II
FYI, the Just Flight PA28's are not yet updated for the new flightmodel msfs uses since the last update. They are not realistic at all to fly and way too twitchy at the moment...
This plane, however, flies perfectly as it should in real life.
Source: I'm a student pilot who flies the warrior in real life
Interesting News I did not know about. Thanks for telling us. I have found them to be quite heavy when landing and they do act a bitweird in their flight behaviors. So that's the reason then? I thought that just flights planes was going to be updated kind of often. Are they abandon or of the about to release new updates?
@@rymdskrotet They said they would update the pipers but it's been a while already :(
What issues come from the PMS50 750nx?
It’s a cute plane. It does make me wish JustFlight hurried up with fixing their Arrows. They’ve been parked in the hangar for months now 😢
Are they broken? I've got them - not tried them for a while.
@@jonbeckett Let’s say their flightmodel has not kept pace with Asobos updates over the last half year. It’s behaving a bit erratically sometimes. I don’t like flying them at the moment. They are working on it though!
I do wish someone else would have made this aeorplane and good video by the way
I fly an Archer II IRL and I must say I have never had the wing come anywhere close to dropping when stalling XD
Yeah - that's what I thought. I was forcing it into a pretty deep stall though. That said - when I threw it into a turning stall and leaned into it - it absolutely wasn't going to spoin or tumble.
Same...I fly IRL and just mushes, not drop a wing. Be great to tweak those stalls cause it's gorgeous aircraft, well done Carenado. Just wish slow flight was more spot on. Bought and will enjoy it.
The Cadet and Warrior I flew IRL did drop wings when stalling but was mushy at first.
Nice review, she's a beauty and definitely fits the Carenado label.
Have you tried the new freeware Version 2 mod for the 152?! It is amazing, absolute payware quality, with a tablet, failures, circuit breakers, state saving, maintenance. I am kind of stunned.
I'll have to check that out!
I love it.
And where praythee can I get this?! Thanks in advance.
@@peterbassey9668 you can buy it from the marketplace
Good educational video ! Do you have your PPL yet Jon ? What GPU are you using, such sharp picture!
No - no PPL :) GPU is NVIDIA 3080 - my monitor here is in 4K - I downrate it to 1080P in OBS for RUclips.
@@jonbeckett Very good picture, super sharp ! Thinking of upgrading 3070Ti but it won’t make me a better Pilot 👨✈️ :) We’ll see
What is your views on this Vs the just flight version ? I have the JF and wonder if it's worth getting this or just sticking with that
It seems to behave a little more predictably. It's worth noting that it's not the same aeroplane though - the JustFlight version is the Archer III.
The JustFlight Archer III has an autopilot too, if that's important to you.
@@jonbeckett just seen it's the warrior 2 that just flight do not the archer 2 so mainly engine differences
Looks like a nice plane but I wouldn't bother myself already owning the Warrior 2 from Just flight seems to similar.
It is similar - still good fun though :)
how u get a Piper Warrior on MSFS Fx ? does it come w it ? or gotta get via Carenado ?
Just flight makes a Piper Warrior 2 for MSFS, it costs $46. There are no Warriors or other Cherokee-likes in the base game.
I see a brown panel...other times I see a black panel. Is that interchangeable for some reason Mr.Beckett?
The different liveries have different interiors.
Why do I want to get this Piper if I already have the Piper bundle from Just Flight? What's you unique about this special aircraft? Inte thought they wore quite similar? Is this in some way a less complicated plane or is it more powerful or....? Please let me know. 👍🏼
It flies more nicely - the JustFlight aircraft need an update :)
@@jonbeckett I see. Did not know that. How to tell if the aircrafts I own are using the latest flight model supported in FS2020? I actually got it, Im a bit confused about the closer view out of the front window....that big hump is weird. Are we looking down over the hood more than straight outside? Also...when lookning left and right true the side windoes (pov control on joystick used, not with mouse) you are VERY close to the window (especially right window). Its like you suddenly are the co-captain. I just wonder why Carenado choosed to do like that? (ive seen it in other planes from them as well).
Thanks for a great channel btw! =) =)
@@jonbeckett Hmmm...forgot to tell you. Im not sure about the physics. I could fly upside down at low speed with very good flight caresteristics still there. Thats weird. Also...the engine seem to loose power, but never stalled. Would it do that in real life?
Many a circuit has been bashed and bumped in a PA-28 A2 without an auto pilot
Does the electric elevator trim work?
I think so :)
No autopilot is a killer on this one. I've owned this and it's too bad, because the flight characteristics of the airplane are very good. Very much like the real thing. I'm still looking for a good PA28-181 Archer II that matches my real Archer II. The Just Flight Xplane Archer III is way too unstable, and it stalls at way to high an airspeed.
But... but... the X-Plane crowd will lynch you for saying that! You can't question the flight modelling in X-Plane - that's as bad as blaspheming in St Peter's Square :) lol
I always wanted the Cherokee 140 but bought the pa28 arrow...oh well
I'm sure they will all arrive in the simulator eventually :)
Can't help but feel a bit disappointed in the lack of overhead switch panel for Carenado's version of the Archer. How else are us PA28 people supposed to feel like airline pilots??
What PA28 airplane had overhead switches? Granted I haven't flown all of them IRL but the ones I had didn't have overhead switches. 🤔
@@BHPilot82 Oh, this was kinda a joke, but yes - some Archers have switches (battery, alternator, boost pump etc) above the windscreen. Not really "overhead", per-se
"It's a nice warm day so it's debatable whether we'll need the fuel pump" - I think you are getting confused with choke, in a carburreted aircraft engine. The weather and temps have no bearing on the use of fuel pump. In the real aircraft (I have 200hrs in an Archer of this generation), you would use the fuel pump for engine start - with mixture and thrrottle set to full - until you see a positive reading on the fuel pressure. You then reduce the throttle to an inch, and turn over. Without the fuel pump, it will take a long time for the mech pump to get fuel into the cylinders, and although it would probably start eventually, you'd have 10-15 secs turning over of the starter.
I meant the fuel pump :) Several of the aircraft talk in their checklists about using the boost pump in adverse weather conditions (cold) to start the engine. Good to get the perspective of a real pilot on this though. I don't think any of the aircraft properly simulate engine management - but I think that's more to do with the simulator at the moment, than the aircraft themselves. I'll do a video about it at some point :) (as soon as we get a really accurately modelled engine)
Yup, you need the fuel pump on for starting, climbing, switching tanks and landing. Carb heat on when landing.
To be compared to the Justflight's one.
How much money is it on msfs on Xbox
Look in the marketplace, and find out :)
Acro with a Piper Archer? Forget it. The Archer, like almost all Pipers, is a flying brick, made for flying from A to B in a stright libe with a very, very stable aircraft. Nothing more. I don't know why simmers pretend to do acro with every plane. In RL you do acro with very few one. A tonneaux with an Archer I believe is mostly impossible and if you try it probably tgere us nkt a secknd chance. I have fliwn an Archer knly twjce but it is so heavy .... only a C172 is prkbably havier... simple easy to fly aircrafts .
We're just finding out how the aircraft reacts in unusual attitudes. While you're obviously not supposed to spin most aircraft, it's good to know what's going to happen if the situation ever occurs.
I watched a video today by "Q8Pilot" posted 5 days ago with some excellent tips on reducing or eliminating stuttering. Titled "5 New Performance Tips for Microsoft Flight Simulator". Might want to have a look at that for some things to check.
Yeah - I've done those things in the past - stuttering is a completely different problem - this is outright freezing. I think it's just down to specific hardware combinations.
Oh well, it was worth a shot. Thanks for the videos!
I’m a new simmer and purchased the Seneca. Once I got into the real details I was a bit disappointed. On the surface push to start pull to stop it was OK.
