Fact #9 The original screenwriter, Gary, came to San Francisco State and he was telling us about that story of how Denzel was upset about the rewriting of the script. Thankfully they stuck with the original because it was what made the film great.
It’s such a beautiful story and I’ve tried to get my wife to watch it because she loves religious movies, but she couldn’t get past the violence and refused to watch. I reminded her that Passion of the Christ was very violent too and she loved that, but that still didn’t work. I know she’d cry like a baby at the end if she just would though!
Such a powerful storyline. What's even more powerful is its relatability to the seemliest unlikely stories of real people. Just listen how Tony Scott relates his life experiences to this movie on the RUclips channel, LAST OF A DYNG SEED.
There are way more, more subtle clues, he trips on a table when scavenging, waves his hand over the lighter to check its working, kicks the steps of the old couple to find them, and many more
In the beginning when he salvages the boots from the hanging guy in the cabin, when he enters the place, he puts his hands on the shelf and feels for the dishes and runs the length of the shelf until he get to the sink. He feels for the spout before adjusting it towards the water bottle. Then he walks towards the closet. He smells something rotten. He doesn't know it's a man until he puts his hands on the clothing of the body. Then he feels down the length of the body until he gets to the boots. He couldn't see the boots were fresh until he took them off the body.
He also told the old couple that he didn't see the trespassing sign. When stopped by the robbers under the bridge, he says the good thing about water being in short supply is he could smell the scavenger first. Blind people with heightened senses would be in the same boat. He also listens for the buzzard, before shooting it for dinner, and listens to the road for the on coming truck.
The story about keeping it spiritual is true. I met Whitta at a comiccon and he told me the same story. He said he was so happy Washington came on because he knew that he would keep the point and meaning would be spirituality and God in the film and not make it a plain action film.
As a Christian, I thought a lot of these signs where pointing to a time after revelation in the Bible. Like checking hands for the mark of the beast, the sky ripping open and “the Son” coming down, the great flash. The war being fought of the Bible.
Right from the start it shiws you hes blind with the car door the wind in the skull and that he checks for boots with his hand. I didnt notice he fired when the cat meowed. Such a great film to find bits like that after all this time. The ending is obvious though its the only option unlike more mysery ir a happy ending neither would have worked but a repository leaves hope for the future. Notice the cross of blood when the guard that let eli escape gets shot and the way they disguise the blindness so its not obvious when you first see it but you kick yourself for not realising why he kicks steps and moves things to check them rather than just looking like the plates in the cupboard. Good vid. My 3rd favourite film.
@@fiat2496 after the fight with the gang in the tunnel eli smells the water the girl offers him when any normal person would see its filthy and black. That bit caught my attention more than any other clue the first time i saw the film. That one made it a bit obvious something isnt right.
I believe in 'Simple Logic' and 'Common sense'. The opening scene, of him killing the cat with the bow, would indicate, that he was probably partially blind, but could see enough to kill the cat. Many people who are not blind, can actually read braille. Blind people, can navigate their local surroundings, by memorizing the area, that they frequent. He spends the whole movie, walking/navigating EVERY area that he's in, and hell.....even shooting people off buildings, when he was in town. Unless, he is Daredevil........that would never happen. Love the movie though. It's in my large movie collection, and I watch it at least 3 times a year.
You're right. I think a bit of creative license was stretched here with some of his super-human abilities such as being able to shoot people off buildings, but all in all, the directors did an excellent job with the subtle cues that he was visually impaired. Many people, myself included, didn't peep that. There was quite a bit of plausible deniability built into those cues, all of which just add to the brilliance of the film!
Could this be The Beginning Of A New World ... A Wish that we wont create Division Praying for more giving and forgiveness Just being who we are And being okay whit learning from each other ...whit Kindness And different talent
Depects a profit like the Bible describes one. And like the scene where he figures out that it is written in braille, seeing they will not see ,hearing they will not hear.
So nobody noticed at 37:55 in the movie there is a poster to the right of denzel that says."The year is 2024, a future youll probably have to see" and some cryptid picture?
If I’m thinking of the scene you’re describing that poster is for a movie called “A boy and his Dog” which was the movie that inspired the Fallout videogame franchise. Which is an homage to the fact this movie was supposed to be a fallout Movie
The fact that he was blind the whole time was mind blowing! Who would’ve thought?
He had his other senses super heightened by god tho so that’s why he was so good

Also he touches the skeletons legs looking for shoes in the beginning even tho a person with sight wouldve already noticed that there were no shoes

Eli clicks his tongue several times in the movie. I think he’s using echolocation or something idk just a theory
How do you know it takes place? 1:21 1:22
#6 is incorrect.
Gary Oldman also played the epic villain in The Professional (1994) movie by Luc Besson.
Thanks for the correction!
Also played a villain in Air Force one.
