- The volta is an anglicised name for a Renaissance dance for couples from the later Renaissance. This dance was associated with the galliard and done to the same kind of music. Its main figure consisted of a turn and lift in a sort of closed position, which could be done either to the right or to the left. It is also called La volta, Volta, Volte. Spelling variants include la volta and levolto; its name is la volte in French and la volta in Italian.
Volta version composed by David Hirschfelder
Detailed instructions for lavoltas were written by Thoinot Arbeau. These instructions are open to some interpretation, but seem to indicate something like the following.
The dance begins with a galliard. Then the couple makes a transition to a closed position. The leader (the man, according to period custom) lets go of his partner's hand and takes hold of her below her busk with one hand, and places the other hand on her back above the far hip. The follower places her near hand on top of her partner's near shoulder. Now the leader is facing his partner while she faces to one side; both will do the turn with forward steps, and both step with the same foot at the same time.
the volta was considered very daring due to the fact that the lady was lifted of the floor in a turning motion and thereby revealing a bit more of her legs and undercoats than was proper :) The dance came to France first and its belived that it was Anne Boleyn that tought it to Henry Viii.
Ah! *clutches pearls*
La Volta…this is an italian word…
@@emmafre-haack1746 yes Italian words are often used in music.
And was lifted by her partner, who had to of course, put his hands on her waist to do so. Especially daring when the Queen is your partner as no one is allowed to touch her. Even to this day (just ask Michelle Obama!).
@@skontheroad Elisabeth knew this, remember it had been at court since before she was born so she would have seen it many times. You could touch the queen if she gave permission, still it was very controversial
I have a strong respect for Elizabeth. She never married and saw her duty was to England. Even if she did sink my beloved Spanish Armada.
It's not your armada. Correct me if i'm wrong, the Armada was 500 years ago. Are you 500 years old? Didn't think so!
@@TheTimeDetective42 don't be ageist
@David Vance Well... In England there are too little forests. I wonder why?... By the end, Spain defeated England in 1604. The Spanish "Armada" was just only a few ships who sank by the bad weather in the Northern Sea.
By the end, Spain prevailed in the Anglo-Spanish War in 1604. Of course, today Spain is so weak, but in XVI Century, Spain was the Biggest Empire EVER KNOWN.
@@Jamie-ho1wg What you did with Boleyn's head? Did you got her head for trophy?
"Play a Volta!"......Elizabeth brought me here.
I can almost see them dancing to this music!! I’m going to go tell my boyfriend to lift me and dance with me! 😂😂. Love this!!!! 💕
Aztec Girl awesome post.
I have actually danced it, years ago when I was at university. I belonged to a Renaissance dance club. You need a busk, a sort of corset thing, so your boyfriend can lift you from the back. It’s a lot of fun!
Sue Bursztynski Thabk you for sharing that story. That must have been fun times!
I am not a dancer. Even when I was young (I’m 55) I never went dancing. But if this music and this dance was in my era, I think I might have given it a try.
@David Vance uuuuhhhhhh.... sir that's a bit weird considering she already has a husband....
My girlfriend and I plan to do it tomorrow ...... perfect dramatic poses!
Play a Volta !
Como no recordar esa escena
Which movie? I feel as though I remember that line from all of them! You might enjoy the splendid La Voltas sometimes done at the Globe at the end of performances.....

Such a hauntingly beautiful piece of music. Elizabeth I is fascinating 🌹💖
Lovely piece of music.

She looking so young nd nice here! i like Elizabeth nd respect her! :)
She was 13 here :D
+Natasha Pavlova Me too.
Alice Nieri she was 14
Georgie __ I thought she was 11.
Back when she was a princess, yes, then there was still something to like. She changed later on.
One of the best songs of the soundtrack
this sounds way better than the one in the movie
Which movie? The 2007 sequel (Elizabeth: The Golden Age) has this version I believe.
Bess (one of Elizabeth's hand maids) does this dance with Walter Raleigh, in Elizabeth 1 - The Golden Age.
I love this beautiful music....so evocative.. I play this full blast ...it lifts me up...
this makes me so happy :) we need another queen like her and fast.
Absolutely, but unfortunately we won't because there was no other woman like her. But Elizabeth was a fabulously strong ruler and was well known for fierce Tudor temper.
I don't agree with you guys, she was a ruthless tyrant that promote piracy and plunder. But the music is great.
Well as the Spanish Empire, the most powerful empire of that era.
I still adore her.today we still have modern plunder and piracy
Yes, another like her. She was in truth a very good monarch, who had over 200 people killed during her reign. Her predecessor Mary had about 150 people killed during hers, but their father, Henry VIII, wins the prize: he had over 60,000 people executed during his reign. Oddly, it was the Catholic Mary who Protestant England called "bloody".
Beautiful music.
It's right up there with the rest of the great, old, timeless classics.
The track is: Coronation Banquet. David Hirschfelder - Elizabeth, The
Original Motion Picture Sound Track. There is a bit of another tune at the start of the track before running into this theme.
I spent so long looking for this on Spotify - thank you! ☆
Nice to have finally found this. Great music from my favorite movie!
Itd very good i love my queen Elizabeth l and ll
Such a beautiful tune
I'm playing la volta for abiut two hours it's like a drug for the soul...
Epistemified82 agreed
No, that's Elizabeth at around 14 years of age. Look at her red hair!
I think she was very lucky to share her father's hair, or they might have questioned her paternity during Anne Boleyn's trial.
She was so pretty and attractive.
I like this pictures.
Very good.
I fascinating Elizabeth 1.
She fascinate me.
Soy numa apaixonada pelas music classics. Joy amo.
Woman had taste, I'll give her that.
Beth was likely the most important person in human history so far. The entire world would be so different today if it had not been for her. Spain would in fact have occupied England if not for Elizabeth Tudor & her people of that time. How Europe would have ended with Russia centuries later isn't known just as how the new world wouldn't be much of a hint of English. Good or bad, she changed history forever more than anyone else.
England, Germany, America & so many other nations have gone to hell in the last 30 years since so called cold war ended (it never ended). An Elizabeth Tudor aka Elizabeth R aka Beth aka the Virgin Queen aka Gloriana sure would fix the problems if she were Queen today.
I do know this song was her favorite. Even with very few original documents left, there is proof this was her big song. It's amazing how this song has lasted so many hundreds of years.
@Ekaterina H So says a female bully to a poster from nearly a year ago. It looks like you're the delusional idiot. Why not move to Iran where females are treated exactly how they should be?
@@Bradley-sl1mp What you say is true Brad but perhaps best way to deal with people like Eka in music vid areas is to just ignore. I realize that person went on direct attack of another poster for no reason but bullies do that as do crazy people. Sometimes best to just not post to them IMO unless in obvious media or political areas.

Thanks doe sharing it. I love this tune :)
this is great music
I was born in the wrong century but then again if I was born that time I'd be underestimated and seen as a mans property (which is the case today anywayyysss...)
Not if you were The Queen Elizabeth i
Beautiful!
so so beautiful .....
Wonderful!
The harmonisation is post-Romantic (I.e. after 1850), even though the melody is of the time.
"Play La Volta," - Queen Elizabeth I
I always play this music again and again

Doing a Volta for my wedding i swear
Yes me too. And if my future husband won't want to dance a Volta, I'm not marry him.
To my recollection, Elizabeth I composed music for the lute. I wonder if there is a recording of her compositions on RUclips somewhere.
Very grand 👑👑👑🌹❤️🙏🙏🙏💕❤️🙏🙏🙏💕❤️❤️❤️💕👑👑👑👑
To all those British nationalists commenting here: La Volta, or Le Volte, is an European composition adopted by English musicians. Saor Alba. Escocia es Europa y Europa es Escocia.

We did this dance in the Philadelphia Revels, it was like battleships.....
I love the music, and I admire the actors in the Elisabeth movie...So much passion and so much self control with a piece of seduction in a very elegant way...I wish to be there...😍🤩
Aaah seen as my fiancé’s idea of dancing is walking backwards with his eyes shut I don’t think teaching him this is an option sadly 😄😂🤦🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
If i to be president i shall play this at my inauguration
I think is the best Renaissance dance.
It this age was the work available.Thanks.
For me because is not now.
I want to dance to this.
yes, a very nice touch at 0:46
" Robin! La Volta!"
This arrangement sounds like it came from a period long after Elizabeth, does anyone know how accurate it is?
It's from a movie soundtrack. Lovely but not period.
I wish i could of danced with Elizabeth.
-i cant believe i just typed that. :(
yeah, an i reckon she had a sense of humour, as she called one of aids 'Pigmy' as a joke - as he was short - true story that.
An she looks kind'a sweet in this picture !
mann, if i had a time machine...
VC YT In her day she was pretty but women were butt ugly then. Plucking your hairline a few inches higher, making your forehead so tall you looked bald? Inbreeding with your first cousins to the point of a recessed chin and beak nose? And the beautiful skin; putting powdered lead to make your skin nice and white then putting on more lead to cover the lead poisoning that has turned your face spongy? Very pretty lol.
@@VCYT I think Robert Cecil (son of Sir William Cecil, who also happened to be her aide) was referred to as pygmy.
My brother wants to dance with elizabeth l but it did not came true because my brother died
I wish my brothers dreams come true
Could HAVE not could of
agree i think thats elizabeth too
I always wondered what the actual piece of music for the volta was. I've watched that dance scene over and over. They acted like it was very racy, but this seems to be a very sedate piece of music.
ah yes. i love ThouTube these days
Isn't this the volta they played in the second Elizabeth movie with Cate Blanchette? Or is it an actual period composition?
It's in the fist movie.
it is not period tune, but composed by DAVID HIRSCHFELDER who did compose "LA VOLTA" and the sound track for "ELIZABETH" movie 1998
one pleasure is , think and feel, because is the party music club of de edge
It means the turning in Spanish 🔥
Que lindo!
Given the large number of period voltas available in recordings, it is hard to understand why this modern adaptation was used.
this is not the adaptation of period Volta, but newly composed (1998)
Wow
Que lindo
a book lead me here....? beautiful xD
yes
True art in Dance!
LOL ask these premade madonas to do this and they will say WTF is that :P
This is true art in music and Dance :)
We live in a sad society we have not progressed we have digresed!
I agree with you.
the woman on the picture must be Anne Boleyn because the necklace she wears...
monny013 No, the one in the picture is Elizabeth when she was a princess at about age 13-14, whose mother was Anne Boleyn. Though Bess did wear her mother's ring for a good deal of her life, so it's possible that she had more of her mother's jewelery to wear as well.
This is absolutely Princess Elizabeth Tudor. That red hair! And Anne didn't live long enough to wear that fashion.
It was her majesty the Princess Elizabeth.
that's elizabeth.
💖
I admire Queen Elizabeth the First, with the ACT OF SUPREMACY she forced the Churches, be they Catholic or Anglican to be at the Service of the State, not the State to be beholden to the Churches.
I love this song but my borzoi loves it as well & sings along so loud I can hardly here it.
I watch a movie about her in childhood and now I grew up becoming an asexual woman🖤💜
