I have had a ‘23 X5 40i for a year now and I absolutely love it.. But, i recently had an X3 M40I for a loaner and had it a few days… I can tell you I was totally blown away! It was SOOO much fun to drive… was not really that noticeably smaller and wasn’t much of a difference in ride comfort etc.. i am definitely eyeing the x3 M40i for the next purchase.

Thanks for sharing! Yep. X5 is a great vehicle overall, but you can tell it's designed for a comfy ride primarily. When you have a chance to drive them both back to back this is where realization happens, that X3 M40i is really fun to drive car, not that much smaller and still has enough comfort. My biggest issues are Sensatec seats and run-flats in X3 M40i.

This is the 4:30 classic trade-off between size/weight, and handling/acceleration. Both of these vehicles are performance-oriented, but with the same engine of course the X3 will be quicker and sportier. I chose the X5 40i for the extra size, and the luxury that came with it. I test drove the M60i which is super quick, but just didn’t want the extra cost and mileage penalty, and the B58 is a fantastic and reliable engine. I suspect your X3 M is more fun to drive than the X5 M60, too. Smaller, lighter = more fun to drive.

One concern is leg room. I’m 5”11 and you look close enough to my height. I’m not a fan of my knee area hitting the oversized center consoles. Plus the smaller seats don’t look like there is very much thigh support. This is true of especially cars and why I’m ready to jump to SUV.

thanks for the feedback. I presume you are referring to X3. I am 6'2 and I feel OK with room overall. I find seats not being comfortable in general. Maybe more premium leather seats are better but regular Sensatec are just not to my liking. Don't really have an issue with knees or shoulders. Maybe because I have my seat more away from the steering. Video #2 is about to release.

Thanks for stopping by. Yep exactly. So if you drive these cars back to back you will realize that why would you even compare them because Base X5/X6 is all about comfort and X3/X4 M40i is a car for enthusiasts. In case of BMW X6 it feels a bit lower to the ground than the X5 and it does feel slightly sportier but the differences are barely noticeable. After driving base X5 I understood 100% why other higher trims exist like X5 M60i etc... those are heavier and more aggressive trims.

I was concerned about the difference between the X5 xDrive vs the X3 M40i. I ended up purchasing a X3 M40i because of a killer deal I got. The amount of room in the X3 was sufficient enough and I thought the X3 M40i would be more fun to drive and boy was I right. This M40i is so much fun to drive. I think the only thing I am missing out on is a little bit more comfort and slightly more room, which for me isn't really necessary. I am coming from a 4Runner so the biggest thing I notice is the overall footprint of the vehicle which I am still adapting to. But, this has been a great purchase so far. I might eventually trade this in and get a X5 xDrive later once I don't feel the need to rip up the roads as much.

Thanks for your comment. I was always a huge fan of X5 in the past as I rented them on many occasions and traveled as far as from California to Texas and back, but this past weekend when I drove X5 sDrive 40i and X3 m40i back to back I reaffirmed I bought the car which I am enjoying a lot. It's all about priorities really: comfort vs fun to drive. Both are great machines. Also I did talk about 3 issues in X3 M40i in 1 of my videos:
      1 run-flat tires
2 firm, not enough comfy seats (base Sensatec seats)
3 suspension could be a bit more refined for comfort
In your case if you have run-flats which most of them come with - switching them to regular tires and keeping them 4-5 PSI less than recommended will improve comfort by about 10-15%

I have an X3 M40i with run flats (just like my Corvette and Mini did) and my trunk floor is flat. Also I opted for leather which means my dash doesn’t feel cheap. When you come to a complete stop it’s suppose to shift its weight, this is also what your local law enforcement officer will tell you, and that way they know you didn’t do a California roll.

    • @100miledrive
      @100miledrive  2 месяца назад +1

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, run-flats certainly help in more aggressive cornering, but it's still debatable, Porsche is against run-flats. As far as shifting weight forward, yes cars would naturally do that but the biggest difference between luxury SUVs versus let's say Toyota etc.. is how they handle this. It's usually more seamless as it is part of delivering luxury experience. Although modern cars even basic once are pretty good at this as well compare to 10 years ago.

Thanks for the feedback. I found X5 to be comfortable even with regular suspension, but also curious about air suspension. I want to get a hold of X5 50e that comes default with air suspension and really experience it. As for the X3 M40i - it's a driver's car. If you get it with Vernasca leather seats and put regular tires then it will be fairly comfortable, yet very engaging/fun to drive. The problem is run-flat tires and base Sensatec seats that are quite firm and really ruin the experience of this car.

"We merge in style" yes you do my friend. :) I just wish X3 m40i had X5's seats. X5's new seats are a huge upgrade last year's X5. They really should have left some of those buttons under the new screen. They really invested in that new dash since they have it in every single new model, doesn't look like there is room for reversion back to buttons anywhere.

thanks for your comment. Yep every time I go on ramp on the freeway in X3 M40i in Sport mode that loud engine growl is a pleasant sound to my ears :)
100% agree on the seats, in fact I made a video on "4 problems with X3 M40i" and this is where I mentioned it. I mean there are optional Vernasca leather seats, but I don't want to pay extra. They should certainly bring Sensafin base seats into X3 as well. I hear many complaints about seats in X3.
As far as buttons, well this is the path to electrification. Eventually all automakers just want to have 1 giant screen and not worry about buttons. Similar to what happened to iPhone from Blackberry times. First everyone complained and then now we can't think of a phone with buttons. I personally still think we should have buttons in the car for essential stuff like climate control, but I don't think they listen to consumers on this.

@@100miledrive I am getting ready to go from G05 X5 to G01 m40i, and honestly, apart from few minor missing issues, G01 that's nicely equipped is pretty much X5-Lite. Sure driving dynamic will be different, and it will definitely be bumpier, especially with 20" wheels, but I really wanted to keep my buttons.
You mentioned Blackberry, now you are rubbing salt in my wound.. As heavy blackberry user since it's first days until it's last gasp with Classic and Passport, I stayed with it as long as possible. Car makers shouldn't compare themselves to smartphones, at least until every car on the road can communicate with each other, and be able to drive harmoniously if the electrification is going hand in hand with self driving, but then who need m40i or hellcat, (I take that bad, they are discontinuing hellcat!) so, there needs to be 2 type of cars. One that's truly ultimate driving machine, which these iDrive with buttons are last generations of that, and one that's all electric and electronic, i7 style. If BMW goes in that direction, I am afraid they will lose the battle to others. Thanks for your reply and I enjoyed watching your videos. PS: I also had to replace my windshield, dealer wanted almost $4k. What's with BMW windshields.

@@HeadingForTomorrow I feel all auto makers follow some agenda where by X year they need to make all cars or most cars electric. In that case it is not just BMW it's literally all of them and it's very sad. I know Porsche will keep their 911 for as long as they can, they even developed their own E-Fuel with a plant in Chile. The only way it can sort of go back if too many people express their unhappiness with the new direction. I recently reviewed Mercedes GLE 53 AMG and liked that for 2024 model they still kept all essential buttons, not sure why BMW had to ditch most of them. Anyway hope you have fun with your X3 purchase. Make sure to test drive it extensively and that you are happy with the seat comfort. One things I still wish I could change is setup more comfy seats in my X3 M40i, these Sensatec are really on the firmer side.

X5 is WAAAYYYYY better on noise, comfort, size, vibration, etc. Not even in same league. Only thing this car has is better acceleration

Well, yes X5 is portrayed as a more luxury vehicle and even comes with better seats as base. X3 M40i needs better seating material for sure.
