I bought my first Silky saw last week, a Bigboy with xl teeth, I will carry it this winter and put it in the four wheeler in summer and get a Gomboy for the pack. This saw when used correctly as I have learned by watching all of Lar's videos, cuts like no other hand saw I have ever used before. Slow deliberate cutting on the pull stroke only, this thing is amazing. Thank you Lars!

I can't believe it's almost Winter again...great time to review saws. Silkys are the best folding saws around. Mine is a Gomboy 270 (10 1/2" blade) with medium teeth (8.6 tpi).

Lars , I now have four saws of different sizes all because of watching how efficient you make them look on your videos , you always have the best advice to share ! Thanks!

  • @andrewsmith1606
    @andrewsmith1606 7 лет назад +2

Use them daily, go-to saws for professional users.
Your view is 100% accurate, depends on usage but really there is not a "significant" difference between the two.
There ability to cut and then shed the waste material is superb. The blades are extremely robust and not easy to bend or dull.
Professional users are particularly fond of the smoothness of the finished cut. It really does give the tree or shrub the best chance of recovery after pruning.
Loved the video, always envious of your location :)

I came across a silky saw quite a few years ago while cutting fire wood, it was lended to a "mate " never to be seen again..., one of my forestry stores recently started selling silky stuff ... got the gomtaro straight away ( not a folder but comes with a leg strap that suits me perfectly )

I have a use for a Silky saw, but once used on a particularly annoying willow, quite large it is, I'd then have no use for one of these awesome saws since I do not have a piece of woodland the size of my county of Derbyshire here in England...not that I wouldn't like it of course. I suppose that I could use my services as a tree cutter and enjoy every moment of it. Silky puts strange thoughts in my mind... Take care...

i pack a fiskars, not a bad tool at all, and it was on sale at cabelas for super cheap. has a full lifetime warranty. love these folding saws. i remember way back when i'd watch the farmers prune fruit trees with pole saws, i thought, there must be a way to make one of those smaller. guess somebody else thought so too.

Great video Lars. I always come away from your videos with useful knowledge. I do like Silky saws. However, recently I had the tip snap off of my Pocketboy saw. Saw still works fine. Just about a half inch shorter. Must learn to not push so hard on the recovery stroke. Had a similar event with my Katanaboy. It’s so long that I had time to react to it binding so there was no damage. Before your videos, I had mostly used a Laplander saw which cuts on both strokes. It will bend but not break. Silkys cut much better and are more efficient. Much less energy needed to operate. Probably would not have tried out these saws without your demonstrations. Great stuff Lars!

Silky saws are awesome! They are actually the reason I started watching your videos. I was researching the saw on youtube and one of your earlier videos on the katana 500 of you sawing out snow blocks with it and was very impressed with it so i watched your other videos and loved them. Your videos have only gotten better since then. Have learned a lot from watching them!

I picked up the 270 when I was in Japan this past summer. Cut through older, forest bamboo on an angle, through the segments, with no problem! I saw the KatanaBoy and that thing is truly a beast! I've never seen a pull saw that long before! A little too expensive, though, at Y130.

Great review Lars, I use the Laplander mostly because I live in a sub arctic environment and most trees are lodge poll in diameter. But I was thinking about getting the Silky Big Boy for little larger trees, and would be a good investment for winter outings because some trees are bigger than others.. Thanks again and enjoy your Thursday my friend, ATB from Yellowknife Canada

Lonny at Far Northwest Bushcraft & Survival rips down standing dead wood with the Katana Bolshoy 500 in about less than 2 minutes.
You said you lost the Super Accel. It's not lost.... down the in the mudroom where you leave the boots, it has fallen into one of the boots.
Also, Silky has the Ono, what standard of practice does Ono occupy? It looks and acts like a cleaver. I would imagine it nonetheless belongs in the Dojo. Yes Sensei?

I think I'll be on the lookout for a folding saw like that to carry afield. Looks real handy for a small pack. Your presentation in a couple videos has left a strong impression. The practicality is in the compact size of course. I think for camp use though it would be hard to beat a small traditional tempered steel bow saw (for wood). I say traditional because they are here in the States. (Although maybe not a traditional thing in Russia)?

My favorite all round for winter is the black 10 Gomboy 270. I like a straight blade, since I want to know where my cut is, for instance when making forestry style felling cuts. Also great besides the sturdy metal bolt is the metal handle frame. Very well thought out. For summer use I have a Pocketboy 160. Ok for few sawing stuff I do then. I like the bahco laplander too, especially in the hands of my little son or wife, it has a much thicker sturdier blade. Poor technique proof.

I suspect if you recommend silky, it is because its the best....i watch you cut 6" trees with ease.......i am in awe with your abilities.....perhaps it is not so much the saws that you wield with ease, as it is more your ability......i need more training.....i am of course one who used to do much more of this in the past....age creeps into our lives, it slips in while we are not paying attention......next thing we know we are watching, instead of doing.......many thanks for your time.....get it done!!!!!!!

Nope, Yankee American. Nothing wrong with cutting ice, snow, or frozen logs - when you need to do what you need to get done. When done with a saw, clean, oil, and put away into container. No ALONE tossing ferro rods onto the ground and losing them ... (ahem!) ... or stomping on a ground saw.
