Can you Cover more Ships from Babylon 5. I've been wanting to watch Babylon 5. SO this would be pretty cool. to hear on the different ships. :)
Ah, that Supreme Commander music. Yes, YES!
Ah... B5... Loved it... Have a look at the olympus class corvette if you get chance
"They never ran out of courage. But in the end, they ran out of time."
If you want to give a speech, you find G'Kar. If you want to tell a story, you find Londo Mollari.
Mister Garibaldi!!!!
Ahh, Vir! Ahh, Mister Morden!
If the Omega is a sword, the Nova is a hammer. It's primary role is to hit hard while not doing much else.
I'm a simple man. I see B5 content, I upvote
BSG, B5, SW, ST, always gets my vote.
Cern Stormrunner im even simpler, i see spacedock content, i upvote.
And expanse. That's an up vote too
Wait was I on reddit all this time?
DAMN STRAIGHT!
How to build a ship 101 if you're the youngest race and need it fast and don't care for looks:
Take a brick-frame, put some engines at the back (let them bulge the frame if needed), a hangar in front, guns as big as you can build em on the sides, and as many bunk beds inside as you can: Nova Class
And some time later when you realize you shouldn't let 8000 soldiers float around uncontrollably during manoeuvres: Just add another brick to the middle of the ship and let it spin: Omega Class
If it looks stupid but it works, it ain't stupid. The Omega could easily fit in The Expanse universe if they used plasma weaponry instead of bullets.
The Omega Class would stop most of The Expanse Ships tbh. It’s a bloody sturdy ship with a lot of weapons that can’t be intercepted by shooting them down.
This made me giggle.
Then take that rotating brick out of the middle....add sleeker contours and chamfered edges...add artificial gravity from the minbari and viola....the warlock class
@@Gothic7876 Well missile and kinetic weaponry still hold its own in terms of range, however the jump capability (especially once it gets more precise) could really turn the tables, one of these 1500m+ monsters would turn Expanse ships into molten slag at close quarters
Londo Mollari had the best lines from that whole series.
Another one: "These are my wives. Famine, Pestilence and Death."
One of the things that made B5 great was a good sized cast that was well fleshed out and covered a whole range of character type...G'Kar and Londo are some of my favorites but Ivanova was the best damn character in the whole franchise. They all got some memorable lines
@@MrGoesBoom My favorite is Vir, he is the only one who got exactly what he wanted.
@@edwardteach3000 Vir was amazing and getting to watch him grow as a character over the seasons was great fun
And the pictures that accompanied the comment are great. I always laugh.
"Do you think i married them for their personalties ?!? Their personalities can shatter entire planets and knowing they are waiting back home - it's what keeps me up here."
Good to see more Babylon 5
*_"We will not lie to you, we do not belive that survival is a possibility. We belive that anyone who joins this battle.. will never come home. ... No greater sacrifice has ever been asked of a people, but i ask you now, to go forward one last time! One last battle, to Hold The Line against the night!"_* - President of Earth Alliance before the battle of the line
Never wanted to live forever anyway
I always loved the Nova and Omega class ships. It’s a shame we never got to see the full potential of either on the show.
With those many guns it doesn't matter if they can lock onto Minbari cruisers or not. Just flood a choke point with plasma. Minbari liked to gate in at weird angles to their quarry, and incoming gates can be detected in time to train guns on a spot and open fire on it as soon as the gate appears. The only downside being that they were horribly outnumbered.
Earthgov: "So how many guns do you want?"
Earthforce: "Yes."
Babylon 5 was a great series. Thank you for any vids on B5.
I love how rough and “Practical” Earthforce ships are.
Putting the majority of the mass in line of its thrust, and slimmer profile when doing a frontal attack is great.
But i’ve always been weary of it putting its hangar on the bow. Pointing the majority of its weapons and a significant weakpoint at its enemy,
US agreed. Problem with hangers is that they're holes in the armor. Should never be pointed directly at an attacking force if you can help it - and when it's in line with the axis of thrust, that's just begging for one lucky shot to gut the entire ship.
Pyreleaf I believe we saw the same design concerns with Wing Commander.
And the Battle of the Void Scene in SG:A where the Daedalus crippled a massive Hive ship with secondary explosions by targeting its hangar.
The difference is in Wing Commander, the Carrier (Kitty Hawk?) was meant to be far away from the action, while in B5 these ships are meant to be in the thick of it attacking head on.
US I think if someone absolutely INSISTS on putting a carrier in melee, at the very least, the hangars should be placed on the sides of the ship, and heavily protected by shields and PDCs.
I guess they wanted ships to dock with the hangar _along_ its like of acceleration.
In the lore, the hanger mouth that you see in the various EA ships is a RECEIVING BAY for the most part. The SOP for EA ships and stations is that they use launch tubes (in the Omega's case, in the rotating hab-block so they can use the centrifugal gravity to launch them) or bays and launch them that way. The problem is that CGI was STUPIDLY expensive back then, so a lot of the lore stuff got cut in the process.
I stashed that render of the Nova class with guns firing 20 years ago or so in college. It's a nice one for a desktop background. One thing I read was that despite the massive amount of guns the Nova class had, the reactors couldn't supply enough power to them, making them have a lot of teeth, but not enough bite.
Loved this ship. Loved the realism of B5. Not just in ship design but also the politics and background lore. Using a tried and tested ship as the backbone of the next gen ships (Omega) is exactly what human governments do e.g. SU-27. It cuts costs and the end result is amazing. B5 won out over DS9 in my opinion.
Can't remember if they ever outright admitted it, but Paramount had DS9 add in a war arc because B5 had plenty of fighting/war in it and was taking away viewers...admittedly the Dominion war parts of DS9 was some of it's best seasons but I still think B5 wins hands down
@@MrGoesBoom Paramount made an out of court settlement.
I love B5 and I really love music from Supreme Commander.
I thought that sounded familiar too!
Indeed, the SupCom music is always a pleasure to hear!
This ship scream MOAR DAKKA
Still not enough dakka. There's never enough dakka.
Blood for the blood god!...wait wrong franchise.
@@invidofinp1828 well... at least the gun size is the same
More Dakka needed but sir.....MORE DAKKA IS NEEDED
Imagine the result on a target that a Nova managed a direct square-on direct-front salvo where EVERY turret could fire simultaneously even if it was only once. Only the rear-facing guns couldn't bear.
Thank you for not smashing the ad in the middle of the video and disrupt the flow! ❤
A famous youtuber described the nova class with one key word *"dakka"* and this dreadnought has lots of dakka
A lovely tribute to one of my favorite designs from Babylon 5. I would have loved to see a Dilgar War prequel series based on the work from Agents of Gaming and JMS from their supplement the Dilgar War for the Babylon 5 miniature wargame. The Nova dreadnought is designed to do one thing, kill the enemy.
It's not pretty, it's not subtle, but it does do the job. Much like the reimagined Galatica, the Nova is a set of brass knuckles you shove in the face of your enemy. Keep punching and they'll eventually go down.
“When they ran out of ships, they used guns...” Anyone else picture a bunch of random ships ramming into each other and one perplexed high ranking officer being like “ It’s no good, we’re going to have to try shooting at them!”?
Edit: because spelling is hard..
Earth Alliance Ships did actually ram Minbari Ships. Minbari Ships fell apart, while the sturdy EA ship kept going
@@Gothic7876 That's what happens when you ditch sturdy hull designs and decide to give the project to modern art students, a flying brick covered in gun is the most delightful sight possible^^
@@scorpixel1866 A flying brick covered in guns?.........................I can think a few ships like that
@@scorpixel1866 eh if the modren art projects got stealth and can melt a small fleet before you know where it is being able to win a game of chicken doesnt really matter
@@vonfaustien3957 stealth in space vs CIWS. Place your bets, ladies and gentlemen!
I just love the aesthetic of the Nova and Omega class. Ugly but also beautiful bricks with great firepower :D
In sci fi - its called human utilitarism - ugly as sin but hitting like a brick through window and dishing damage like there was no tommorow.
Spacedock, you’ve been on fire with the ship breakdowns, recently!
Always good to see a bab 5 ship. Especially ones of the EA fleet.
gahh, Earth ship will do fine spanks, the less we mention the evil empire of EA the better.....frakking lootbox peddlers....
Oh so that's why Earth did not have gravity generators and all the other good stuff, it was a DLC that the other species paid for before us
I love B5 it is one of my favorite franchises. Can you do one on the station itself?
well the first 3 were destroyed by sabotage or other means and the 4'th one was lost on activation and on;y the 5'th remained in use....
it was our last best hope for peace.....
Point of note: it is stated that the Omegas rolled off the assembly lines AFTER the Minbari war.
However, a few prototypes may have appeared in at least one battle mid-war.
It was actually due to a computer error.
Absolutely brilliant, thank you! Your B5 content is always greatly appreciated 👍🏻
space dock: posts star wars and star trek ship reviews*
me: nah
spacedock: post b5 ship review*
me: you have my attention
Gonna be re-reading the Dilgar War fanfic now.
Finally started Babylon 5 and man is it awesome getting to see this content at the same time! Feed my growing addiction please.
I love the Earthforce starships. They look so menacing.
Always happy to see B5 getting its due on the net. :)
Would have loved to hear about the "shadow" infused version during your civil war!
Please Sir! Can I have some more? Love B5!
well i normally watch all of spacedocks videos anyway but hell yes to a B5 ship.
Woooo Babylon 5 :) I just brought all 5 seasons just a few weeks ago. I already had seasaons 1 & 2 but 3 to 5 were so hard to find, I just brought them all as a set.
Too bad JMS didn't know about thrust gravity like in the Expanse when he made B5
If I remember correctly, one other problem it had was that it used plasma cannons, which are devestatingly powerful... inside the plasma bolt dispersion range, which was extremely short compared to the beam weapons used by most of the other B5 races, particularly the Minbari. This is why the Omega is depicted as being better armed, despite fairly obviously having significantly fewer guns
"sees new B5 content. begins screaming incoherently."
The Nova Class: When you've absolutely, positively got to kill every last motherfucking opposing ship. Accept no substitute.
Dont think I didnt notice that supreme commander music
My favorite background B5 ship, Thank You. And Can you do the adamant frigate or arachne cruiser from battlestar galactica deadlock please?
You had me at the Supreme Commander soundtrack
I love B5 it was such a great series..
Have you read the epic writing of Lightning Count which I refuse to call fanfiction? (It's canon damn it!) He gives the Novas, along with the rest of Earthforce and others, the respect they deserve. I love his description of how the EA, barely 100 years into a space, built a battlewagon capable of taking on Centuari Battleships in a slugging match.
Take this biggest laser cannons (later replaced with plasma) that humans could design without something melting, put them on a heavily armored stick, and just keep adding more of them. Because if the gun you have is not very accurate, then simply use *more* guns and by law of averages something's gotta hit.
I still remember the moment when the Earthforce battle line of 500 Novas opened up their combined broadsides on the Dilgar fleet for the first time. It was a lot of build up to that moment, and it was all worth it.
Yea The Dilgar War is amazing. To alot of fans it is the Canon interpretation of the Dilgar War
is there anywhere a description of the Dilgar war?!
@@atlanteean Dilgar war on Fanfiction.net. 104 chapters and three times the word count of Lord of the Rings.
Awesome story that really fits the tv series, I would love it to pieces if it was both declared canon and if they could have gotten a movie based on it. 100+ chapters of goodness with a fantastic cast.
@@MrGoesBoom Movie? What are you smoking? They would need at least 20 40 min episodes to tell it.
"The Earth Alliance said that I would only be allowed back into production over their dead bodies. Then I said, "Why, how strange. General Franklin said I would only be allowed out of production over HIS dead body!" I know it is a burden, but with my busy schedule I can only accommodate so many requests. So you shall simply have to wait your turn!"
- Nova Class Dreadnought, In The Beginning (Probably)
Love all of B5 ships
There you have it, now i must rewatch B5 (again).
There’s a B5 mod for Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. I enjoy playing with the Nova. Yes, its range is smaller, but in Nexus you can divert auxiliary power to systems, so I gun the engines to get close, and then switch power to weapons and watch as the plasma cannons tear the enemy to shreds.
Please do more Babylon 5. Such a great show. Keep up the good work.
Perfect choice of music for this ship.
Omega-x (shadow tech) was awesome
Gotta say, I love the supcom music in the background at 0:21!
Awesome, I watched the show over the past few months so this was perfectly timed.
"The Humans, I think, knew they were doomed..."😭
I always liked how humanity in B5 overcame inferior technology and managed to become a peer to the more powerful races through sheer brute force.
You forgot luck
It seems to have been mostly down to spending, they built the Explorer Class ships that explored new claims and set up jumpgates with their tolls and that financial revenue (along with protection money and favourable trade deals from helping the League of Non aligned worlds beat the Dilgar when they were on the verge of defeat) was what allowed them to build a fleet vastly larger than most other races with the exception of the Minbari and Vorlon. I mean if you look at the size of the Earthforce ships (km's long with tonnage well into the tens of millions) and factor in Humans only had a couple of developed colonised worlds and two dozen or so mining colonies and outposts on less hospitable ones (across just 14 star systems) then the fleet is larger than the industrial output of the Earth Alliance would otherwise allow. Those 14 colonies seem tiny when you see the Earth Alliance controlled a significant chunk of the galaxy (circa 10%) the Vorlons had nearly half the galaxy and then the rest was pretty much divided up equally among the other major powers and league of non aligned worlds. The Centauri seem to have had dozens of colonised hospitable planets but not a huge industrial base due to their decline, Minbari had likely nearly a hundred colonised planets and then the Vorlons had hundreds of heavily industrialised worlds (just a simple observation post had a moon spanning city).
Some say that ''Hangar'' in front was supposted to be front facing engine's nozzle for slowing, but budget wouldn't allow it with CGI that was already underwhelming for that time, due to severe lack of money.
petr pinc that and CGI for a sci-fi series like that had never been done before, and they were figuring out how to do things as they went
@@bytesabre Yep, weird to think that people today can put out same or better quality from home, what back when this first aired was super expensive and took whole teams.
MrGoesBoom yeah a load of Amiga 2000s and video toasters strung together with bailing wire and gaffer tape iirc
This is awesome. More B5 content please. At least until the new season of a The Expanse arrives.
8,000 troops. Thats a LANDING PARTY
One of these rammed one of minbari's ships. So they were useful
They could actually kill Sharlin class War Cruisers without ramming, since with the sheer number of heavy cannons on a Nova, they could hammer a Sharlin to pieces with concentrated broadsides at close range. The Issue of course, was getting into short range to broadside them, without getting cut apart by the Minbari's superior weaponry
@@weldonwin No, the problem was targeting the Sharlin. The Nova had enough range to go against a Sharlin, but it could not hit it.
@@alfredkugler3043 That was why they needed to get to short range, in order to actually hit the Sharlin
Well ramming kinda implies you gotta get close - and Mimbari ships could strike from quite far away and they had better sensors...so ramming while possible.... was tricky :P
Basically too unreliable to use it as a main battle tactic.
Oh thank goodness Babylon 5 wasn’t forgotten about
Definitely one of the stand out moments from B5 was when Clarke sent forces to seize the station.
Always psyched for B5 content. Excellent work as always!
That Supreme Commander theme is so nice
B5 will always have a special place in my heart.
Has Spacedock ever presented a ship breakdown on a Minbari Federation: Sharlin Class War Cruiser? My favourite design even over the First Ones' ships.
Always did like how the earth ships looked. None of that smooth hull stuff. To me, exactly how a younger race ship should look like.
Yes! ..
now hoping for the Hyperion class soon
UEF March music
More B5 please!
As soon as they got close enough to aim by sight, they killed whatever they shot at.
Can't remember if you have done Spaceball 1 yet?
Thank you .
I would love to see a Gloriana-class battleship like the Vengeful Spirit (with either Horus or the Anamnesis) against an Eclipse-class Star Destroyer
A big ship with big guns? In a Scifi show? I'm in love.
2 videos in 2 days? That's a nice surprise.
But the Nova reminds me of an issue with the design: the fact that it has an exposed hangar bay on the front. I remember a fourth season episode of B5 where a crippled White Star slammed into an Omega's bow, and the explosion travelled straight through the heart of the ship, completely destroying it.
Thinking on it, Star Wars and BSG have the same problem of unnecessarily exposed Hangar Bays/Flight Decks, where one good nuke would tear the ship apart. I think would make a great Short Video, addressing how so many IPs featuring strike craft have this issue, while one of the few that completely avoids it is the one that barely uses fighters: Star Trek. (I dare someone to name a ship class in Star Trek that doesn't have shuttle bay doors.)
I would have never expected the Nova to predated the Hyperion. Earth Force Shipwrights must have really loved the design to use so many of her features in the Omega class Destroyer.
what works work plus lots of spare parts that could be repurposed into the omegas. also shipwrights would need less training/exp to crank out omegas
and we never once saw it firing a shot in any episode.
Not in an episode. But it "in the Beginning" shows a Nova firing one of its cannons (a pair of strange, organe, laser-like beams, very distinct from the yellowish green Minbari weapons)
You can see them firing (and getting annihilated) in this sequence from Babylon 5: In The Beginning from which the opening of this vid gets its quote: ruclips.net/video/DeNBJ5o-b7s/видео.html
Such a shame we didn't get to see it firing a big volley clearly. I understand it was said when they were firing off a full barrage their engines had to be shut down to divert power.
That Londo speech is one of the finest sections of B5 ever, and that bit of it where you see an Olympus class and her fighters going up against about 30 Mimbari war cruisers......:O
Surfshark also protects you against Mimbari scanners from interfering with your scanners
The Nova just looks mean! I love B5 ship design more than any other franchise. So many hits, and so few misses.
Instant click. Love the Nova almost as much as the Omega.
Nice to hear more Supreme Commander music... hope they make a third game at some point...
You should do the vessels from the Honor-verse...
always upvote B5 and supcom
I think I prefer the Nova to the Omega class, for one very basic reason... *MOAR DAKKA!!!*
There’s also another Nova-derived ship, the Poseidon-class supercarrier. Never shown onscreen, but it is present in the canon tabletop game. It has reduced weapons but double the fighter complement of an Omega, 96 in total. Also a better hyperdrive for quicker getaways.
The Posedion, by my count, completely fucking unfair. 24 Starfuries is bad enough, but 96 Starfuries is basically an "I win" button. I've run simulated fights using the tabletop RPG where 12 Starfuries operating as a wing have shot capital ships to shit in a few rounds and taken maybe, what, 3 casualties each?
All this dreadnought talk makes me want a ship from the Honorverse. Hopefully HMS Fearless!
"There is no such thing as enough dakka." - Nova's designers, probably.
They should've painted them yellow and black. Mimbari ships are blue and are very hard to hit, so... whaaaaa!
Can you talk about some more ships from WH40K? I love your videos and would like to know more about the universe of 40K.
During the Minbari war, Earth should have taken 1\3 of the Novas fleet, and upgraded it with the weapons they bought from the Narn. Remove the side guns and replace them with a pre-Omegas interceptor. The 4 cannons in the front upgraded to pulse cannons and the Narn laser weapon beams.
That's, surprisingly enough, is what the Earth Alliance did. The problem was that the Earth Alliance was losing shipyards at a prestigious rate once the Minbari went methodical instead of essentially YOLOing.
Nice supreme commander music
Thanks for the review. A nice design
This is one of those ship designs that scream "Don't f*ck with me".
Very nice! Now, can you do Spacedock breakdown on Babylon 4?
The embodiment of human ideals. When in doubt, add more.
Wasn’t that about the only time B5 Earthforce got naval ship type nomenclature correct?
They needed to swap around the Hyperion and Omega designations then it would actually be alright.
TheCormTube sounds about right, Omega class is clearly a Battlecruiser to the Nova Battleship (Dreadnought)
If you're referring to the Omega being called a destroyer it was a bit of bureaucratic paper shuffling....I can't recall if it was to get by the Senate not wanting to spend money on new battleships/dreadnoughts after the disaster of the Earth/Minbari war or if the end of the war had some sanctions on Earth Gov on how many battleships they can build. Don't think it's ever mentioned on screen and this info comes from the books/comments from the creators.
Simple swap around to Hyperion class Destroyer and Omega class Heavy Cruiser would have worked better from a logical size/strength point of view by 2nd/3rd seasons of B5 I think.
Always liked the look of these (comes in 2nd to Omega though), but they are at the same time kinda silly with all those bristling guns 😛
And 8000 troops embarked possibly + 36 fighters? That I find hard to believe/picture, but then again, they *are* big, so perhaps...
I love how the Earth Alliance effortlessly makes some of the deadliest warships and the like, despite being one of the youngest of the young races.
Could you do the Scout/Courier from Traveller? It's become surprisingly iconic to the brand, probably thanks to its space dorito frame.
