- Lost for over seven decades, a recording of the original 'If I Only Had A Brain' for 'The Wizard Of Oz' was discovered in 2009. This recording sung by Judy & Ray Bolger was far more sedate compared to the version heard in the film; it was decided by the producers that a more energetic rendition would better suit Dorothy's initial meeting with the Scarecrow, and was re-recorded.
It's always fun to share something like this. To my knowledge, this has not been widely broadcast. I used Oz photos, & especially love the colorful vintage posters.
'If I Only Had a Brain' was written by Harold Arlen (music) and E.Y. Harburg (lyrics).
Originally, the music was to be used for a song called 'I'm Hanging On to You' as part of the 1937
Broadway musical 'Hooray for What!'. The song was ultimately dropped from that show, and when the pair were later hired to do the songs for Oz, Harburg simply wrote new lyrics to the tune.
(Scarecrow)
I could while away the hours
Conferrin' with the flowers
Consultin' with the rain
And my head I'd be scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain
I'd unravel any riddle
For any individ'le
In trouble or in pain
(Dorothy)
With the thoughts you'd be thinkin'
You could be another Lincoln
If you only had a brain
(Scarecrow)
Oh, I would tell you why
The ocean's near the shore
I could think of things I never thunk before
And then I'd sit and think some more
I would not be just a nuffin'
My head all full of stuffin'
My heart all full of pain
I would dance and be merry
Life would be a ding-a-derry
If I only had a brain
Cut verse (at the end):
Gosh, it would be pleasin'
To reason out the reason
To things I can't explain
And perhaps I'll deserve ya
And be worthy erve ya
If I only had a brain

I like this version more. its more peaceful :)
To my mind, this is Hunk rather than Scarecrow-perhaps a few years after Dorothy returned to Kansas and told many stories about her adventures and the romance that had been planned for the two of them beginning to grow.
I just whiled away 5 minutes!
love this song!
Very nice presentation! And thank you for sharing the song with the world....always need more Oz in the world!
^^X^^
And perhaps I'd deserve ya! And be even worthy of ya! If I only had a brain!
I love that line, simply because it's one of the few pieces of a scrapped subplot romance between Dorothy and the Scarecrow/Hunk the farmhand that has survived up until now. The only other piece of that plot that still survives is in the film itself, when Dorothy hugs Scarecrow and says "I think I'll miss you most of all." The more you know!
A wonderful alternate take of a classic, with a lovingly and skillfully put together montage. Thank you ! ! !
I believe this montage was apart of the dvd
This is from the Richard Thorpes version. I am a Wizard of Oz historian. Everyone thought all records of film or sound from the "Thorpes" version burned in the MGM fire. This is quite unbelievable!
I love this version
my philosophy of life!
Amazing Never herd this version !
love this! thanks for posting michele :D
Great find.. prefer the film’s final version better.
Thanks for sharing this very rare clip...
Hi Sam!
Not my notice at the beginning ... it is my first Judy/Oz video, but not my last. SMILE.
I don't know the origin of all the posters, but I love the colors! For the B&W, I just added a touch of graphics on a few. It was great fun creating some of the video movement to coincide with the music. There are some fabulous 'pops'!

Awesome
@AMTProductionCo
Nice find but I can see why they went with the upbeat version.
@MicheleBell1 Wow! were did your friend find it?
I'm not sure this is indeed a cut of anything that was "lost". A 4-DVD bootleg japanese set of outtakes sold on Ebay for years until the studio went after the seller. It contains multiple versions of almost every song, including one of a sobbing Garland singing a reprise of Over the Rainbow from the witch's castle...
I have this on CD .......Thank You Judy and Ray from a little boy who had not a clue as to the honest truth of self and then finally the heart and strength to be be a Gay Man ......Love Ya Always.
Not rare, its everywhere! It was simply a test recording never used or released. Just like the Jitterbug and all the Buddy Ebsen scenes, they'll be released one day (Hopefully!!!!!)
