I didn't go to bars or pubs very often, but when I did the dim lights, laughing people, a den-like atmosphere, who wouldn't want to be there? An old song comes mind. "One for my baby, and one more for the road." Exactly.
A pub is many things to different people. An escape to decompress, a social hub, a warmth sanctuary to others and just a meeting place to many. Nothing nicer in my drinking days on a cold dark night to go inside and sink a few pints with a good friend. They were fond times Steve mate. But history now.
I went into the pub to see some old friends and was going to have one beer and then switch to alcohol free. Woke up at about 10 the next day on my mate's sofa after drinking four beers at the pub and then heading back to his place to drink more. Was lovely to see friends but just amazing how the booze gets hold of you.
Drinking is a habit like smoking, over eating,it is normalized from an an early age in Western culture, we did not know any better and it was an escape. I have simplified it in the 3 reasons we drink which are we are addicted, lonely or bored or a combination of the above.
The only thing I miss about drinking is socializing in pubs. But when I started drinking, my friends and I would party with bands and travel to other countries on a whim... but 0eventually, the spark dims...some of those people I knew sadly became addicted to harder drugs, and they're TFG (Too Far Gone), and my drinking became a miserable solitary experience
Working from home made it way easier for me to drink. I would do Zoom meetings while drinking alcohol from a coffee cup and would have a cask of wine just out of view. At the time, I thought that no one noticed, but I would start slurring during long meetings and occasionally say inappropriate things. It wasn't a good look.
I once passed a chap outside a popular watering hole in a working class industrial town that had once seen high employment but had rather fallen on hard times. The library had closed and there were many men like him with too much time on their hands. Anyway he was in floods of tears this guy. I was so stupid, I didn't realise at the time he was fighting the urge to enter. The worst thing about alcohol addiction is it has unlimited patience, it will sit in a dark cellar on its own and wait for you to decend , now then it will say, where were we
My pal named his bar “The Lobster Pot” for this very reason. Really easy to get in and virtually impossible to leave. 😂 Not wanting to make light of this btw - I am recovering too. Keep up the great work Steven. Thank you.
I believe that the inside of a pub can contain more than just the spirits on offer behind the bar. Many pubs become haunted and I believe that certain deceased spirits return to feed off of those drinking.
a warm pub with an open fire and a game of darts or pool and an exciting conversation with a friendly stranger which then leads to buying drinks for folk and your mindset is feeling good..then you consume more to gather more confidence which then leads to that alcohol trick that makes you feel ok until the demons kick in and totally change the way you think before you know it it's late in the evening and you're getting depressed with negative thoughts and the sad songs are going on the jukebox and you're spending money you needed for bills..then the next morning it's that anxiety time again with regret
Environment is a big factor. In England and Ireland I drank like it was a hobby. Here in Thailand I haven't had 1 drink in 9 months. I think societal pressure is a big factor. Feeling like a loner when most people drink.
Nightmare scenario once your in there steve. Pals turn up, ale starts flowing and before you know it your blind drunk again..!!..and so it goes on. Have a good weekend stevo ❤
Always had a meal on the go at home so had a reason to leave. Lockdown was a game changer for hub and me. Suddenly, we had to stay in. It was fine as there was always a great meal on the go. Was already banned from the local, so it was fine. Have got to a stage now where we don’t want to go out. It’s boring and too expensive and food out is rubbish. Still drinking the same amount, just different. Don’t miss any of it now.
@ lockdown made things worse for those who lived alone. My friend’s drinking spiralled out of control as she was unable to work in her self employed job, wasn’t eligible for support from govt, got into debt and died in her flat earlier this year. The govt has a lot of explaining to do.
Remember the pub called the Roman Urn it was nicknamed the Tardis because when you came out you were in a different time zone and the landlord used to lock the doors so you couldn't escape .
I do have to say that my son (who's 25) seems to be more aware of all the pitfalls of alcohol than I ever was. He seems to realize how physically dangerous it is as well as how addictive it can be. I think much of it is that they were given better facts earlier on.
The pub isn't stopping you from going, it's that one glass of alcohol. It's powerful stuff! As for drinking at home, that's all i did, every minute of the day apart from the few sleeping hours yet i still functioned working from home . Business is booming now though so maybe i wasn't functioning as well as i thought

@garyfaulkner1480 hey Gary. Yes I'm well thankyou, very stressful with work and my daughter's illness but another day ticked off sober. How are you feeling today, good i hope xx
Home drinking being on the rise is 100% a thing. Rather than coming home and having a beer they start with a cheeky one at lunch, then carry on into the evening. The people who worl hybrid treat the end of the office week like a Friday and have a drink as it feels like the end of the week. Its part of the mindset of a reward after a long day/week etc but it gets skewed
You can call me a negative thinker, but my gut feeling is a lot of these people " working from home" are drinking on the job and mistakes in their work are now coming out.
During Covid-19 when you had to queue at the supermarket and have social distancing, I saw so many people loading up their trolleys with booze. The supermarkets then limited how much alcohol you could buy, just like how many toilet rolls you could buy. This "working from home" really kicked off from then and it's no wonder people don't want to return to the office.
It's still about 15 by day but it drops to about 0 at night it gets cold in Granada Province were 900 metres above sea level but it hardly rains all year summer hits high 40 s Tek care . 👍🏴🦊
Great video as always. I must be honest that the pub as never been a feature for me. I have a garden office (work for myself) - and it has a fridge! / I have never been a social drinker, rather a lone drinker :)
The pressure to drink is a factor too - when you tell long term drinking pals you don’t drink anymore or don’t want to go on mad nights out half the time the reaction is really negative. Perhaps it’s because they have a drinking problem and your stopping makes them think about it, if you drink too it makes the other person feel better.
