Dear Beth, I am an absolute metalhead and watch a lot of your videos. In this video, the song and especially your reaction really touched me. You are a wonderful lady with the soul of a musician. Thank you for the great video. Metal rules

    Dear Beth,
I have been a loyal fan of yours for some time now. I have watched many reaction videos from other creators to this song. Some were so superficial that I couldn't bear to watch them until the end. You have shown a reaction here that is full of emotions. You convey the trust to familiarize yourself with the song, the guy, and the content as if it were a hit from your own youth that you are presenting to us. That is really beautiful because it makes me feel understood by you. You are able to show and explain Herbert's performance to your viewers with the right words. Thank you for that

As you noted in the video Herbert is the most successful German artist ever so he has had his fair share of success, but I love the fact that this song in particular is getting all this belated recognition it deserves.
I wept with you, thank you!

German language can be so beautiful and poetic. Every time I hear this song I must cry

  • @anni666s

I think this is one of the most beautiful songs there are. The melancholy feel and chords, the harmonic turns, the backstory, but most of all the language. The english subtitles were better than I expected but the german lyrics are so poetic and even epic that you wonder how he came up with it - nothing plain about it and so many possible meanings, from "bowing the rain" to so many more things. Simply beautiful and it never fails to make me cry.

It is amazing how painful it can be, if someone expresses his love so beautifully. Not zooming in on the grieve that is, but on the happiness that was. The listeners don't need explanation, we know: The more beautiful the poetry of love, the more painful will be the missing of it. Masterpiece!

Too Close To Touch - "Eiley"
To me, one of the saddest songs. And one of the best songs ever written.
About the front singers loss of his 3 year old sister, and the pain from his siblings, and parents.
Put unto that, that he himself have died since ( Rather young ) adding to his families pain.
In general such a underrated band. Underrated singer, that now is no more.
And a song that really just hit you like a train.

Subtitles for all the non-German viewers could also have been included here. But otherwise a WONDERFUL reaction!
The German language today has a bad reputation for sounding rude and aggressive.
Herbert in particular is characterized by a certain raw (screaming) style when singing - and many people make fun of him because of it.
But songs like this one show how beautiful our language can be. Even the translation managed to make you cry.
But believe me, his choice of words in German is even more beautiful and special! It's like painting with words.

You're not only an expert but also a beautiful soul. There is no doubt. I love your sense for technical details as much as your empathy for the artists and the messages they express. I m a musician myself so I enjoy to hear your analyses always adding a new perspective to mine. More than just entertaining. I ve seen many of your reactions but this one is especially respectful and emotional at the same time. Appropriate for this remarkable song. Thank you for your brilliant work!

About life not being fair, I always think of a great quote from my favourite series:
_"I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, 'wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them?' So now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe."_

Grönemeyer is popular not because he is a great singer. I don't want to be mean, but he sounds a bit weird at times. He is popular because he is authentic, honest and simple but thoughtful. An every day poet. Thanks for reacting to him, a german national treasure. If you want, you could add a reaction to your list for his rendition of "Bochum" and the german traditional "Steigerlied" live in Gelsenkirchen 2003 - Mensch Tour, to see a more happy side of him. There is a video here with subtitles in english (for the "Bochum" part of the video).

This is maybe more than ever a beautifully emotial, respectful and knowledgeable reaction.
6:12 "cathartic but difficult": in my opinion the thousands in the audience felt this and showed their respect for his grief yet bravery to perform this song during his walk after he ended the song.
Tbh, although being German myself and growing up in the 80´s/90´s I never was a big Grönemeyer fan, but there are 3-4 songs, which do get me every time. This one does for sure.

this song is touching so much, not only because of the content and the artistic lyrics but also so much because of the built of the melody: always, when the melody wants to blossom, it goes down again earlier than at normal songs, earlier than expected there are sad chords again or these chromatic "stairs" downwards (like at 0:46), like in the reality, in tragic life moments, the punch into your stomach comes earlier than expected, just then, when hope just wanted to emerge, or instead of hope you can also say inner peace or relaxation. And what you say: he goes for it and allows it to be a shout, (especially, when it is the most painful and we would rather not dare to show emotions of the hardest of all the feelings, he goes exactly then openly and that is painful).

If this song doesn't touch you, you are not human.....
I always cry when i hear this song, the pain this song transports is so strong..... how he can manage to sing it i don't know..... i couldn't.
The whole album is a rollercoaster of emotions by the way. I can only recommend it.

A super sad and yet a littelle bit hopeful German song is "Auf Wiedersehen" by Feuerschwanz. Ben, the singer wrote it when his mother passed. I listened to it a lot when my wife died back in 2016 and Ihad it played at her funeral.

This is probably by far Grönemeyer's most beautiful and most intimate song. You can not be not moved by these lyrics. I'm tearing up everytime I listen to it, no matter how often I've heard it. I always think I'm fine, but then Grönemeyer ascends into his "Every room you flooded with sun", and I'm dead. If you can ever say or feel any of the things he says about a person in your life, I believe you can call yourself rich. It also makes me happy that these wonderful words cause the same emotional reaction with someone not speaking German. Cudos to the translation! Although it can never be quite the same, the English subtitles hit it quite right.

He did also some great songs you have to know …they are on the „Bochum“ Album…its a german City where he was born and grew up…. I always feel like singers with not overly perfect vocal technique and maybe a bit grit to their voices connect differently with listeners, maybe because they register more as real, emotionally available, vulnerable and authentic, than artsy perfect ones. Mr.Grönemeyer is definitely one of the great ones at that, he always seems authentic and real and his songs are usually really poetic without being cheesy and kitschy. If you feel like listening to more German music in the vein of this, I'd definitely suggest Silbermond with Songs like Himmel auf, Symphonie, Das Beste, Weiße Fahnen, Ja, Ich bereue nichts, Nichts Passiert, Durch die Nacht or Bis zum Schluss with German Rapper Curse. Of the top of my head, I'd also add Maxim's Meine Soldaten and the Band Parka as well. Reinhard Mey or Konstantin Wecker, both being like popular old school singer songwriters and maybe some Marius Müller-Westernhagen might be up your alley, too, though I'm not really up to make suggestions as I'm not really a regular listener of those. Oh, and maybe some Soolo or Christina Stürmer? We got a darn mass of great poetic bands that definitely defy the German harshness stereotype ❤😉

There is a song called "Nur zu Besuch" (roughly "just visiting") by Die Toten Hosen which I had considered to be the saddest german song ever before I came across this one here.

Singing in German: Udo Lindenberg, an absolute icon who has been making music for over 50 years. For a music video I'd suggest "Mittendrin" which showcases both his distinctive voice and some nice shots of my home city (Hamburg) ;)
Singing in English: I'd love for you to take a stab at Avantasia, a melodic metal project similar to Ayreon that I've been a fan of for over 20 years. There's not too much high-quality footage of them, but I'd suggest "Mystery of a Blood Red Rose" which focuses entirely on frontman Tobias Sammet's vocal chops, or "Draconian Love" which puts him into a duet with a very different singer.
Just for fun: Scooter - How Much Is The Fish :D

Oooffff... I shouldn't have watched this... Herbert just hits different... I don't often listen to German songs. In my opinion, the missing language barrier can make songs super cringe, I don't know how else to put it. I hope you get what I mean.
Would love to see you react to some more of his songs. "Halt mich" (Hold me) would be amazing, it's a beautiful love ballad with amazing piano playing.

As a German who grew up in the 80s and know Grönemeyer since his early days, I have to admit, his songwriting and his vocals never connected with me on an emotional level. I know there is a lot of making fun about him, that's not what it is for me. I respect his talent, both as a musician as well as an actor (he was great in "Das Boot"), but with some artists, it just doesn't "click".

A lot of why this hits has to do with the way german works as a language. German has a unique quality where it can be very raw and descriptive and very poetic at the same time. That‘s why lyrics like that create a very direct emotional response

Well, one of the ultimate tearjerkers at least in German language (It's an Austrian song) is "Komm grosser schwarzer Vogel" (i. e. "Come Big Black Bird") by actor and singer/songwriter Ludwig Hirsch, but I don't think there's any subtitled version available ...
