What an odd case for the Toronto Maple Leafs looking back on this pick now. Their Center depth is John Tavares, Auston Matthews, Nazem Kadri, and Frederick Gauthier. And boy, could they use a defenseman right about now. This was clearly the right pick for the Maple Leafs, it's just odd to see so much forward depth but practically no defense. Also, signing Frederick Anderson to a 5 year $5M cap hit was also a good decision.
Leafs picked a defenseman on the last 2 drafts, 1 of which was projected to be a top 3 pick at one point before getting mono.
@@SuperheroRockstar Liljegren was projected to be top 3 based on the prediction that his SHL production would take off in his 17 year old season, which it didn't. Mono was a factor, but not the only factor.

Pierre-Luc Dubois is a questionable pick at #3 overall. They definitely reached a bit to get him. That was a bad pick by Columbus.

Pierre-Luc Dubois was simply not worth the #3 overall pick. There were much better players than Pierre-Luc Dubois available behind him. He should be a mid 1st round pick. I already knew that Matthew Tkachuk was better than him before the draft. I think they should draft the best player available, and then trade them if they don't want them. You can draft a player, and then trade them for a much higher return by driving up the price for desperate teams. Chiarelli would definitely make that deal no matter what the price is. No price is too high for Chiarelli. It is all about asset management.
Ratings are not always accurate. Ask EA. I watched both of them, and Tkachuk has a much stronger hockey IQ, and he is also a much superior player to Dubois.
Patrik Laine never should have even been considered for 1st overall. That is because of his attitude and inability to really elevate his team to that next level. I like him though, but he is not really worth going 1st overall.
