As a life long Oilers fan, I'd like to send my congrats to Leaf Nation. I fully understand the excitement that comes with a number 1 pick and Matthews looks like the real deal. Fingers crossed that he helps lift your team back to the playoffs!
Watch it be this season, when we least expect it. My Sharks aren't making playoffs this year, so I'll be rooting hard for the Leafs because of Steve. Of all the teams who are making the playoffs and haven't won the Cup, Steve's the biggest die hard fan of them all.
Im from 2023- Mathews Tavares ROR Kadri won a cup with avs. Bozak won cup with blues. Kessel won two cups with penguins. There was this whole pandemic and.... I've said enough
And 6 years later they still only have 1 playoff round win. Enjoy the victory of getting Matthews back then. That's all the Leafs are going to win for a long time.
5 years later, if this is the best that Matthews and company have, the Leaves are far fricking away from winning a cup. The top 4 Matthews, Nylander, Marner, and Tavares have NO playoff heart. To have any real success in the playoffs the Leaves are going to have to part with at least 2 of those players. Year after year they have proved that they have no playoff heart. Regular season, absolutely. Regular season when everything is easy, and the refs call everything. No heart when the going gets tough.
I want to time travel back and tell Steve that the pain only intensifies from this moment of joy. So much so that you question if this moment of joy is even going to be the answer.
6 seasons later, Matthews has 54 goals with 12 games remaining. John Tavares is a Leaf and the new Captain. Matthews and Marner are debatably the best duo in the NHL. We had a 3-1 SERIES LEAD, and blew it in the first round. We got a new goalie who is an All-Star. Got Mark Giordano, Wayne Simmons, Jason Spezza and a young guy from the Arizona Coyotes named Michael Bunting who is like Wayne Simmons and sets both Matthews and Marner up. Also, also, beats people up.
Bunting beats people up?!?! WTF are you talking about? I don't think he's ever had a fight in the NHL. Maybe 1? Matthews hit 60 goals in the regular season 2 years ago. Good for him. How much playoff success have the Leafs had since they got him? 1 playoff round win. He is a regular season performer only. The 3 other "top guys" are also regular season players. None of them have the heart required to win in the playoffs. They are not going to win anything with that "top 4". You all need to accept that. Go on, tell me how all star their new goalie is. Which new goalie was that? Giordano is old and done. Simmons is a press box filler. Spezza is retired. And Bunting helps the team more when he is out of the lineup than when he is in. Face the facts, the Leafs are closer to needing a rebuild, than they are to a cup.
