I use a Lenovo T420 myself. I initially acquired it for around $80 on ebay. I've since upgraded the RAM to 8GB, swapped out the optical drive for a drive caddy for a 1TB harddrive, swapped out the battery with an extended battery that would increase battery life by double, and added an mSATA SSD. By far, the addition of the mSATA SSD was the greatest performance boost, next to the RAM upgrade. Worth noting: some variants of the T420 come with an i7 instead of an i5 and have a discrete NVIDIA Optimus chip with Intel Graphics instead of just the plain Intel Graphics.
Edit: this video did not mention that there are variants of the laptop in question with far greater resolution of 1600x900p.

ThinkPads like the T420 or X230 are perfect for CRPGs, RTS or 4X titles from the 98/XP days and even up to something like Civ5 or Dragon Age: Origins. Emulation of NES/SNES and Sega Mega Drive is also totally fine on these machines as well. Some cleaning and new thermal compound will keep them running for ages and what more games do you need? No DLC, no microtransaction shiet.

I recently managed to get my hands on a used T530 for only $100 AUD which is in almost perfect condition other than some marks and gunk on the top matte surface and it didn't come with a battery at all. I just bought a replacement aftermarket battery that was proven to pass the BIOS DRM for around $40 and it is my daily driver now apart from my desktop. For a machine this powerful and for the price I paid, it does everything incredibly including a few modern game titles. Not to mention it still has a crazy amount of customisability including up to 16gb of RAM and the ability to replace everything from the drive, the disk bay and the CPU. Good video man, everyone needs to know these machines exist so they can stop wasting money on modern laptops 5X the price and with under half the performance.

The short answer: Yes, you can game A LOT on it.
The longer answer: No, it may not run the modern, poorly optimized AAA ports and large open-world titles too good any more, at least out of the box. Plus at least 8GB of RAM is highly recommended, as integrated graphics chips use RAM as their VRAM.

It originally had Windows 7 (w/o any of that bloatware found on modern laptops), but I upgraded to Windows 10 in 2015. With this specifications, it would make the ultimate mid-range PC for $450-$500. The most efficient thing to upgrade on a laptop overall is the ram capacity and channel which does a pretty good job boosting performance. Small capacity of the ram or single channel can bootleneck the cpu´s integrated graphics drastically. I would recommend at least double the capacity of what this laptop came with.

I swapped my i5-2450m out of my old laptop in favor for a i5-3340m with hd 4000 graphics, it was much much more capable. you should be able to do the same on this laptop.

If you play with bots in csgo your fps will drop significantly because the bots are very demanding on the cpu. Next time play some deathmatch or competitive to get true performance measurements :)

I have that laptop and it's good for school/office work definitely would not reccomend gaming on this as I have tried it before. The graphics card makes any game look like pixel art on minecraft and it lags too much.

This model also came with a 1600x900 LCD and Switchable GPU (Nvidia NVS4200M next to the Intel Graphics) and also had a Intel i7 quadcore CPU. So if you still wanna do some gaming on it, you may wanna consider that model over the much cheaper i5 dualcore + intel-graphics-only model which has been shown in the video. :)

    Look dude.
The T420 is my exact same laptop, I picked up this on purpose and yadda yadda.
    But.
As long you keep your expectations low, you actually CAN play games on this laptop. With 8GB of RAM you can play slighty older games or esport games no problem. Maybe on low settings, but I found myself playing a lot of TF2, CS:GO, GTA San Andreas and even recent titles that are not very demanding on-the-go. You can game on a T420. But you can't play GTA V ultra-settings at 60fps, that's for sure.

Can you put a e-gpu on ir ?

    • @Heidegaff
      @Heidegaff 6 лет назад

Probably yes, someone I know did it with an X220. It has an ExpressCard port, or you can remove the 3G adapter and connect it there.
But let's face it. There is no point in doing it. You're not going to get the performance of the same graphic card connected in a desktop PC. The T420 has been relased with the Intel HD Graphic 3000 but also with an Nvidia GPU, I guess that with it you can squeeze some more gaming performances, but this is a portable workstation, an external graphic card is not going to turn it in a gaming rig. A 400$ desktop would be better.
But still, this is an EXCELLENT laptop, totally worth the money.

ThinkPads are the best laptops of all time. They are cheap and powerful and super durable. I recently picked up an x240 and it can play games at 60fps and even edit 1080p video, It was only $155 shipped too!

I bought similar for $210 but w/ 8gb of ram, 1600x900 display, and I replaced the dvd drive with a caddy drive and put a 320gb solid state drive in. Boots up within 15 seconds.

Of course you can. Load up windows 3.1 and dos and you got a damn good gaming machine...none of the games put out today are worth playing so you don't need a brand new $5k+ computer to play games on.

Used tech is really cheap is USA. In my country а T520 (good condition , not refurbished) is about 250$. But still , 1000$ ultrabooks have similar performance compared to a T420 , T520.

Best available models had 1600x900 (crappy colors) - it's possible to use Alienware screen (TN but much better). After flashing CoreBoot it's possible to use i5-3xxxM or i7-3xxxQM. If You get version without dGPU add eGPU via adapter on ExpressCard. Perfect setup (very cheap optional docking station) ;)
