"Slow down....I'll tell you when...I may never walk again.." C'mon, you can figure it out. This was probably the most "overlooked" song on the great Aja album when people discuss their favorites, but I find myself re-visiting this gem often. Like so many SD tunes, after several listenings, it just attaches itself to your brain and forever alters your consciousness, like a narcotic.

I agree with Jennifer, their 1972 debut album "Can't Buy a Thrill" was a strong start. Had hit singles "Do It Again" and "Reelin' In the Years", both are still played on classic rock radio today. That was when they were a traditional rock band with around five members and they were touring then. A few years later most of the original members were gone and Steely Dan became a studio project (starting with the Katy Lied album) with Fagen and Becker bringing in the best studio players. Their sound became more sophisticated and layered as you noticed in the Aja album. But "Can't Buy a Thrill" has that classic rock sound and it's worth checking out. There's not a bad song on that album, they're all catchy.

Don't forget Fagen's The Nightfly. I think I found Steely Dan in the eighties. Was listening to Led Zeppelin in the seventies. Although I did hear "Can't Buy a Thrill". Saw Joe Cocker at the "new" Niagara Falls Convention Center. One of my favorite local bands opened for him.

Not everybody was gettin' this like '78 and '79. Most of my friends were still hitting top 40 radio play - but I soon developed new kindred spirits. I liked many different genres, as long as it was GOOD, and this was REALLY GOOD - but in those days I was still listening to Jethro Tull's earlier stuff, I discovered Rickie Lee Jones' first album, and about this time David Bowie released 'Golden Years' which I still dig.

  • @raycewilliams3300

You commented on the guitarist using nylon strings and playing with no distortion. SD would sometimes bring into the studio three or four guitarists for an individual track. Fagan and Becker were looking for a specific sound. My guess is that many of these guitarists would bring in several guitars strung differently. I am not a musician but it sounds to me that the strings used were made of CLEAR NYLON because of its brightness and clarity. Those are two attributes that appear on most of their music. They never sound muddled or distorted. On this track there are three guitarists Walter Becker, Larry Carlton and Dean Parks and, of course Chuck Rainey on bass guitar.

60's, 70's....the scene in LA was "anything goes' creatively. Not formula driven like most of today's song forms. Steely Dan was one of the most 'listened to' groups by other bands and the underground night life crowd. They were on top.

Good going guys, yess very jazzy, Donald on the piano, he's so good, makes it sound like its just on the fly, Walter too, but it so isn't, very orchestrated, and that crisp sound is also production, they were masters at that, they've worked with so many people, Steve Winwood's solo music is very much the same, crisp sounds, great production, you can tell, try Valerie, Roll With It, Back in the High Life(they used it in some beer commercial, Bud?), Talking Back to the Night,, that jazz guitar play ,
You can also check out, Stanley Jordan(did a guest cameo on movie Blind Date, crazy movie with Bruce Willis)Ronny Jordon "After Hours",
beautiful,..keep going, enjoy, Godspeed, Peace ✌
