that's what assume they did, but like he said maybe the athletes they tested just had more muscle fibers due to genetics. The only way to tell if it's possible to gain muscle fibers would be to have the same individual show an increase in the amount of muscle fiber
Because muscle fibres are several cells that have fused together (if I remember correctly) to form a single long cell with multiple nuclei. This has been observed to occur during fetal development but has simply not been seen in any other level of human development. It is difficult to imagine a cell as long as the muscle fibre to multiply the same way an ordinary cell does.
