I just received my new violin and I’m a beginner. I managed to drop and shatter the rosin. Then while tuning the violin I broke the D string. Fun day 😂
Been there done that! Lol
Omg same here. My rosin came broken and I broke the A string while tuning it. Haha!
Dang! Rough start!
Me who dropped my rosin and threw it away already:
*r e g r e t*
Me: after buy a new one
Interesting video. The way I do is I take a little aluminum retainer that used to have small table candle in it I put the rosin inside the container and set it on my wood stove Nice & Smooth no fire no Flame not much smell and it makes it perfect disc of rosin just like you would buy at the store
Nice! Sounds like you have perfected the process more then I did lol
well, happy birthay Chris and thx for the vid! Now I'll try to fix my rosin after your paradigm!
I appreciate that!
As always, very informative and interesting. Great job. A question for ya: What is the story behind the ring on your left hand?
You'll never know...😎
I just dropped my daughters and it shattered into three chunks with little sprinkles. I modified your technique and just used a lighter to melt them back together. So far so good… and it smelled so nice! Makes me want to burn frankincense and copal incense!
Doesn’t your heart stop when that thing shatters? Lol.
Yeah, that works too! I’ve done it in the microwave and in the oven. Glad it works for you!
very helpful, thanks.
Thank you!
I wonder if the honey trick will work?
If you boil water In a pan and use a small class mason jar and put the resin in the jar and the jar into the water. Might try it
That will probably work.
Thank you for this video! Does this procedure affect the quality of the rosin?
Only if you burn it. Try not to let the rosin boil. If you watch it closely you should be good.
@@ChrisKempter Thanks!!
Do you think I can put it in a cupcake tray in a cupcake wrapper in the oven?
I've actually never tried that, so I'm not sure. But the main thing is, it will probably stick to everything and never come off. That is why I've always melted it into what I would eventually be storing it in.
can you microwave the Rosin
You can, but be very careful. It’s very easy to boil it.
I received a rosin with fractures already in it. After a while, pieces started to fall out. I decided to recast it. I used a different method than yours, but it finished out nice, and solid, no cracks. I set it aside. After a couple hours, it has fractures all through it. I didn't drop it or anything. Why is that? I just don't get it. Has that ever happened to you?
What method did you use if you don't mind me asking?
@@ChrisKempter I put the pieces and dust into a shallow glass coaster and put the coaster in a pan, which I then put on the stove. I had used aluminum foil and duct tape to corral the liquid rosin in the original wooden frame.
So, I poured the liquefied rosin into the frame and let it cool until solid. I then removed the tape and foil. That's it.
@@ChrisKempter I wonder if a bit of oil or beeswax (or something else) might be a fracturing deterant, but not ruin the bow with stray oils? There must be some binding ingredient that will add some flexible strength (if that is what is needed). I wonder if anyone has done any research on the topic?
That is definitely interesting. You basically did the same thing that I did only with a pan instead of a torch. Was there something in the pan that might have mixed with the resin? Like some cooking oil or grease?
@@ChrisKempter Nothing used at all. Just a dry pan with the glass coaster sitting in it. I had thought I might add water to the pan (like for double boiling) but dismissed that as overly-enthusiastic. :-D
I hope I can do this using oven.
It works well in the oven. That's what I used the first time I fix it. Just be careful with it. It will easily start bubbling on you. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for your help. 😊 i will try it if ever my rosin breaks. More power to you!
Will a hair dryer work instead of a heat gun
Maybe. I've never tried it.
Can that be done in oven??
Yep! But you have to watch it closely so it doesn't burn.
Does this work with bass rosin?
I believe so. It works with cello resin.
Microwave it?
That will work, but you have to be very careful. It will burn very easily
"Don't burn the wood or boil the resin" *burns wood, boils resin*
Lol
@@ChrisKempter when I did this though mine cracked after
I've had that happen before. I usually just heat it up again. Mine was very dark though. The lighter grade might not be as easy to keep from cracking.
I wish I didn't throw out my rosin now! :'(
Lol, now you know!
@@ChrisKempter that video was very helpful thank you. I have a torch and the great outdoors to melt my rosin with. I will definitely try this out.
