The Motion: This House Believes A University Should Be A Safe Space.
Molly Greenwood opens the case for the opposition, as the second speaker of six in the debate.
Motion Defeated
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
She was asked to state facts, she certainly did that. Motion demolished
socrates would turn in his grave at the thought of 'safe spaces' in university. university is the place to challenge ideas, not protect them.
Of course he would turn in his grave. He had to die because he offended people who then wanted Athens to be a safe space.
They are not talking about ideas, they are talking about doing something about injustices in the world
@@ninalincool5478 by denying any talk that isn't in agreement.
Safe space means I am too fragile for the world. In that case you shouldn’t be in the university in the first place
The fact that this even needs to be debated shows how backwards we've become
Just buy a daycare center. Put the Oxford logo above it. And send the students, who cannot tolerate different opinions there to learn. Give them some coloring books that look like college exams, and everyone else should be fine.
Ha ha other universities are literally like that. The students then get surprised when they’re not able to get a job afterwards!
Put the Oxford logo above a mental asylum and send them to their safe space in the rubber cell
I've a crush on Molly Greenwood
This woman is beautiful. As a person, and as an intelligent being.
Is there any full video? Or does Oxford split every debate in sections?
If only people in America knew how to debate instead of just fucking yelling at each other while completely foregoing facts and consideration of one another's viewpoints. My country in it's current state makes me sad
Well said!
I just watched Aimee something's proposition, and this lady was a breath of fresh air and logic
Bravo!
I'm 36 years old
I graduated in 2006
Fucking hell
When I was in college, the only debates we ever cared about were
Beer or Rum
Nightclubs or House Party
Roadtrip or Bonfire
Costume Party or Masquerade
Rocky Horror Night or Kareoke
Sleep in or Hair of the Dog
We didn't even protest for free condoms, we wanted full control of our lives
Only safe space we ever even thought about was a safe space for the booze so it wouldn't get knocked over
Good points, thank you for your time.
You are the politest person with a Nazi flag as their profile picture I have ever seen
That, my dude, is the flag of Kekistan.
Kekistani Flag> Nazi flag. How is it a Nazi flag? Have Kekistani caused a mass genocide? No? Then kindly shut the fuck up. There's your politeness gone.
img.4plebs.org/boards/pol/image/1493/84/1493848024492.png
Literally based off of the flag of Nazi Germany's military
Sorry for my cursing lol, but I fail to see how similarities in flag design means it is still the same flag. It's been co-opted, yes, but do you see people who adhere to Kekistan going out doing what the Nazis did?
"The librarian elect for their speech" but there's only one librarian elect.
I believe it's called Trans-normativity. Unless you are a bigot, you WILL universally adopt the linguistic practices of .3% of the population in order to make them feel more normal.
Don't they read Quintilian or Cicero at Oxford anymore? This could have been a very convincing argument - if shortened, enpaused and vocally emphatic delivered. But who wouldn't be camera-struck as well?
Festina lente!
Damn son, I'm having Lucy Liu in her leather skirt flashbacks.
And it's worse 5yrs later
THICCC
is a safe space just an echochamber?
strathclyde student union USSA -- unfortunate acronym
"and to create a network of friends and acquaintances which is for the first time, not based around our parents"
Wait, what?
I would've thought the vast majority of your friends and acquaintances you make have nothing to do with your parents? i.e friends in school...
Late response but where you live and the schools you attend are ultimately decided by your parents/guardians. As an adult with the right to choose your own college, it is a network that is potentially completely free of your parents' influence.
Intellectuals are sometimes fools
Anyone find their physical stance a bit awkward? The lectern should be in front of the facing the audience. Instead, they have to crane their necks to address their audience.
This is how the British parliamentary style of debating is structured.
When you look at the like dislikes of each part, Its clear what most people think.... But thats what they want protection rightt opinions.. cause they are afraid that they might be exposed to something that will change their mind?
Safe space in a University is an oxymoron !
I would love to see Ben Shapiro on that stage even though he is American
Is it a particularly British debate tactic to willfully avoid the actual points of contention?
In America, we start by defining our terms, laying out points of agreement, and then focusing on specific disagreements.
None of these speakers has attempted to define what they even mean by "safe space." None has given a single example of a rule, policy or feature of safe spaces.
In America, our politicians do this, but not our academics. A politician will promise you "change" and let you imagine what that change is. These speakers mention "safe spaces" and simply allow everyone to imagine for themselves what that might mean.
again just another reading of a pre-written speech. These 'debaters' have no emotion whatsoever. Is this a Freshman class what-not-to-do archive?
I think you missed the point in the application of _Safe Space,_ Molly of folly. The phrase pertains to free speech without the threat of academic or vocational beheading. You see, an unwelcome viewpoint would indeed be crushed - and perhaps que riot and violence. That is the scat, the matter of mutter, the blight that needs light. Impressive cleavage-powered oration, however. Cheers to you from the States. 🇺🇸💛🇬🇧
Next up Molly Greenwood, who's high pitched, speedy, slight garble is difficult to follow, nervously speeding through a tightly wound up presentation riding a light vocal fry that is borderline intolerable and clearly unhelpful to her goal of clear communication. She is like listening to someone trying to play a tune on an creaking screen door.
