    socrates would turn in his grave at the thought of 'safe spaces' in university. university is the place to challenge ideas, not protect them.

      Of course he would turn in his grave. He had to die because he offended people who then wanted Athens to be a safe space.

      Safe space means I am too fragile for the world. In that case you shouldn’t be in the university in the first place

    Just buy a daycare center. Put the Oxford logo above it. And send the students, who cannot tolerate different opinions there to learn. Give them some coloring books that look like college exams, and everyone else should be fine.

    I'm 36 years old
    I graduated in 2006
    Fucking hell
    When I was in college, the only debates we ever cared about were
    Beer or Rum
    Nightclubs or House Party
    Roadtrip or Bonfire
    Costume Party or Masquerade
    Rocky Horror Night or Kareoke
    Sleep in or Hair of the Dog
    We didn't even protest for free condoms, we wanted full control of our lives
    Only safe space we ever even thought about was a safe space for the booze so it wouldn't get knocked over

      Sorry for my cursing lol, but I fail to see how similarities in flag design means it is still the same flag. It's been co-opted, yes, but do you see people who adhere to Kekistan going out doing what the Nazis did?

    Don't they read Quintilian or Cicero at Oxford anymore? This could have been a very convincing argument - if shortened, enpaused and vocally emphatic delivered. But who wouldn't be camera-struck as well?

    "and to create a network of friends and acquaintances which is for the first time, not based around our parents"
    Wait, what?
    I would've thought the vast majority of your friends and acquaintances you make have nothing to do with your parents? i.e friends in school...

    • @demacry
      @demacry 3 года назад +1

      Late response but where you live and the schools you attend are ultimately decided by your parents/guardians. As an adult with the right to choose your own college, it is a network that is potentially completely free of your parents' influence.

    Anyone find their physical stance a bit awkward? The lectern should be in front of the facing the audience. Instead, they have to crane their necks to address their audience.

  • @commontater1785
    @commontater1785 3 года назад

    Is it a particularly British debate tactic to willfully avoid the actual points of contention?
    In America, we start by defining our terms, laying out points of agreement, and then focusing on specific disagreements.
    None of these speakers has attempted to define what they even mean by "safe space." None has given a single example of a rule, policy or feature of safe spaces.
    In America, our politicians do this, but not our academics. A politician will promise you "change" and let you imagine what that change is. These speakers mention "safe spaces" and simply allow everyone to imagine for themselves what that might mean.

    I think you missed the point in the application of _Safe Space,_ Molly of folly. The phrase pertains to free speech without the threat of academic or vocational beheading. You see, an unwelcome viewpoint would indeed be crushed - and perhaps que riot and violence. That is the scat, the matter of mutter, the blight that needs light. Impressive cleavage-powered oration, however. Cheers to you from the States. 🇺🇸💛🇬🇧

    Next up Molly Greenwood, who's high pitched, speedy, slight garble is difficult to follow, nervously speeding through a tightly wound up presentation riding a light vocal fry that is borderline intolerable and clearly unhelpful to her goal of clear communication. She is like listening to someone trying to play a tune on an creaking screen door.
