- After years of dragging around a bait tube in Hawaii I decided that I wanted to build a fiberglass livewell. I started building this 3 days before heading down to Florida for the sailfish smackdown EKFT event. It was a major rush to finish it that quickly, but I was happy to test it out. From that trip and throughout the build of this livewell I have a lot of improvements to make on the next livewell build for my Revo. Later on that trip with my buddy Wade from Hawaii I flipped 5 times trying to make it in rough conditions. I ended up losing this livewell unfortunately, but didn't lose much else. It sucked, but I was ready to build my next one. I have already finished the new livewell and I am planning on building yet another one with all the information so far. The next video I will go into a lot more detail on how I exactly build these livewells.
Materials
Blue painters tape
polyester resin
10oz fiberglass

Yesterday, I watched the DIY floating livewell you made. Now this? No more tangle around your rudder with this setup for sure. Nicely done Bro
Thanks Ken
Awesome build
Thanks bro!
@@FlyingFish_TV you are welcome!
That’s awesome I would like to see a more indef video on this bad boy
Great mode, Very inspirational! Thanks. I love the way you made it mold to the kayak hull and kept a low center of gravity. I will look fwd to seeing the improvements on the next version. Although black looks cool, I would have opted for a more heat-reflective outside ( Hot water kills bait). I don't like the idea of having it overflow into the back of the kayak. If the scupper gets clogged, that area will fill up with water causing the free surface effect (instability).
That's great and well done on putting such a helpful video together too. Life will be so much better without a bait-tube!
lol, dragging that sucked
Genius! And welcome to the Outback Squad!!!
Lol, not sure I like very much for offshore fishing
No more getting your lines tangled with that set-up. Nice job!
Thanks Robert
Very good job. Wouldn't be surprised if kayak companies started to integrate them.
Thanks Eddie, it would be interesting if they roto moulded them into the kayak
Super nice and way above my skills!
Wish I could pull that off!
I bet you could do it
That new bait well fit like a glove. 👍 I use your older style bait tube for ocean paddleboard fishing with slight modifications. Works great!!
Nice dude. I have been building a paddle board the last few months, looking forward to taking it fishing.
@Vaughn, What kind of modifications did you make and would you suggest me? I'm about to build mine.
Thanks again bro, livewell is magic
Fosho bro. Causing lots of wiring problems for you though
Great mod!
Thanks dude
Awesome video I was thinking about a similar project some years before
It's great! I would like to see the little oxygen water pump installed in your live well too!
That sound you used brought back a lot of bad memories
Dang sorry Arden
GREAT JOB :) !!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Stan, I mean Bert lol
EKFT is usually pretty rough, not surprised you flipped 5 times. This livewell looks amazing, I've always had a Hobie livewell but my 4 kayaking buddies all pull your PVC tube around.
This was the day after the tournament. 15-20mph of onshore wind. It wasn't big when I launched, but when I headed in from 300ft the waves were around 4ft. At a half mile offshore it came up to 20ft and that's where it was breaking. The outback does not surf, the nose dug in and the whole kayak pivoted. No coming back after that. I learned a lot of the experience and was lucky I didn't lose more. Fish finder and reels were all in the hull in dry bag and my rods were all strapped to the side of the kayak.
@@FlyingFish_TV When the weather is marginal, It frequently gets like that straight off 16th st. on an outgoing tide. If it's breaking there, It is usually better to pedal in to the swim buoys a quarter mile south and then pedal Nth along the swim buoys until you are straight off the launch area.
Nice work. What a great job and an inspiration for me to make one too.
Thanks bro. Next video (2.0) will be a lot more in-depth, but a 3.0 live well is coming after that lol
Dan -- very unexpected and cool!
Thanks Richard!
Wow, nice job!
Braddah, very cool, very cool!
Thanks bro!
Whaaaaaattt hahaha men that is amazing, I will love to have one like yours
very cool with lots of work !!
Came out awesome
Thanks Rich
That is awesome Dan!
Thanks bill!
@@FlyingFish_TV thank you for all the info you gave me man!
Great video
Thanks dude
I saw this in action on Shane’s kayak and I had to see how that amazing craftsmanship was done. Beautiful work and so dang effective. So much better than having bait with all busted tails and fins 😂 One question if you have the time: I failed to look at how the water is expelled; does it just overflow out the top?
Different level shit right here! Awesome brother!
Awesome man! Tune it
Excellent.
Excellent work. Would you do anything different with it for opelu? I don't think they'd last long with a bubbler
Very cool
Thanks Doc!
Nice project! Why use the livewell after years of the tube in Hawaii?
Thanks dude! Wish I had made this in Hawaii, but I spent all my time fishing lol
Increible amigo 👏👏👏👏
Thanks Luis
I love your videos mate and am keen to do a live well for my Hobie compass in NZ soon. I have not thought too hard on it yet but I would like one in front for convenience. I built your rocket launcher this week with a few mods you will probably like, mainly a "stay" to take the flex and creak out of the design. If I get time I will post it up. I am lucky to have a laser cutter which makes things much quicker.
Did you made the video with your mods? I'm about to build mines
@@araldf No video, I used drain pipe instead of pressure pipe which is much lighter weight.
@@Robonza Do you know the correct name of that kind of pipe or the material is made of? I live in Mexico and would be helpful to know how to ask for it in the store
Hi, Dan, what about this project after months? Do you think is good, In the following videos I see the tubes again. I would like to try doing it in my outback to gain some space...
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
love how you did the top. Is it all glassed together?
This one I glassed from the outside. For a better finish I tack the the top on with a little bit of glue then cut out the lid hole and glass it on the inside. Less to fair on the outside and stays closer to the shape of the hull. That will be particularly important on you kayak as I think he rear well is pretty deep.
Great vid, I miss the new content of you fishing over here on O'ahu, but I've been re-watching your old stuff. Quick question, doesn't the extra weight of the water in the live well weigh you down quite a bit? I mean I had a few inches of water in my kayak and it was a drag, not to mention it really sat low in the ocean.
Wow, great addition to the Hobie. I have to ask you something. It took me 2 beers just watching the video of you do all that work building that live well. How many beers did you drink making it? 🍺🤣
Lol, I could have had about a 12 packs worth. Considering I get messed up on 3-4, It would taken much longer though.
@@FlyingFish_TV
I have to say that you go all out and do not cut any corners when you get it in your head to build a project. I remember watching you video on how you built your custom rod holder. Good work!
Glad to see you getting back on the water. I foul hooked a 20lb shibi Saturday out by HNL. First time foul hooking, felt like a 70lb fish. Do you have another social media platforms?
lol, foul hooking them will do that. I thought I hooked the bottom one time, but it was a shibi. I have an Instagram, there is a link in the description if you're interested. It's the best way to get a hold of me
That's high level! I just made mine out of a 16 qt. Coleman cooler lol.
lol
Great video, thanks for showing your process!!! Can't wait to see the next one! Was the whole tournament a total bummer or worth it for something to build on? Would a PA14 kept you from flipping or just too insane? Thanks again for all your videos!!!
The tournament was okay, but pretty expensive. It was during covid so most of the fun stuff was shutdown. Not sure my Revo would have even saved me on that day. The outback however, digs in when pushed by a big wave and then pivots off the nose. No recovering from that.
@@FlyingFish_TV I have been able to just stop peddling to prevent a broach on the open ocean, but our waves are a lot smaller in Florida than in Hawaii. It seems mandatory to pull the mirage in the surf even on small waves to avoid a flip.
Hi Dan. Regards the odd fish you caught & uploaded the clip for 3 weeks ago….take a look at Patagonian Toothfish info & pic’s on the web. I’m interested to know if this is another name for the fish you caught? Thanks. Jamie (New Zealand).
Hey Trevor, I hope things are going well for you in NZ. I checked out the fish and it looks different from the one I caught. The one I caught is called a Walu in hawaiian or an oil fish more commonly. It's also affectionately called the diarrhea fish (too oily to digest).
🇧🇷👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
How did you fit the pump
Hi Dan.
Q1. The blue tape was masking tape, yes?
Q2. The foam you used for creating a form was closed cell foam?
Many thanks for the vid! Jamie
Yes it was blue 3m painters tape. And the foam was closed cell. It’s the pink foam they use for insulation, I got it at Home Depot.
@@FlyingFish_TV thanks Dan.
Hi Dan, what’s the water capacity please? What would you say was best minimum?? Jamie
Hey Trevor. This one was about 7 gallons (26 liters) at full, ideally you only need 3 gallons (11 liters) for a really decent live bait well. The live bait tube was only 1.3 gallons that I used to use. The hard part is getting the water out as fast as it is pumped in. A 1.5 thru hull was the sweet spot for the over flow for a 500gph pump. I need to build version 3.0, but I’m crazy busy right now with my airline training.
@@FlyingFish_TV thanks Dan. Jamie

What did Ol' Lady Flying Fish TV think about that project?
lol, she wasn't happy about the smell of polyester resin
So do you ship? 😂
lol
