In this talk, Dr IKM Mokhtarul Wadud discusses Australia's balance of payments (BOP) in the context of open economy macroeconomics. The talk highlights how Australia's BOP has evolved over recent decades, with special emphasis on how the dynamics of comparative advantage in trade of certain products and associated changes in foreign investment have shaped the Australian BOP and the Australian economy over the years. The role of the mining boom and the Australian economy’s growth trajectory in the post-GFC period will also be highlighted. Dr Wadud also draws the implications of such dynamics for Australia’s BOP components namely, the current, capital and financial accounts, with special reference to Australia’s prospect as a trading nation.
