I had no idea this was a genre until you started this series. After your last video collab with Fascinating Horror, I went to his channel and started bingeing his videos. Then others started popping up on my recommended list and wow - this is one dark, creepy rabbit hole, my friend! After two or three episodes, I have to stop and watch some of your nostalgic mall videos to help balance the energy. 😨😱😨 Vaporwave, neon and food courts to the rescue! This collapse and the collapse of the condominium in Miami teaches me one thing.... Never underestimate cracks you see in a building. Those are just one of the warning signs of a potential collapse.
There are many more example of that. I've heard of at least two cases where emergency total evacuation of building where ordered for the mere mention of a diagonal crack in a wall. One of those buildings actually collapsed the next day before the inspectors had time to get there. I think that the second got preemptively torn down.
WTC had big cracks in them lets stay in a burning building with big cracks in them very smart ...
Cracks in concrete are normal though. Its about differentiating which are serious and which are not. But if everyone overreacted everytime they saw a crack in concrete then everything would be closed

@@punker4Real WTC were steel skyscrapers and had holes not cracks. Big difference. Champlain and this were reinforced concrete. Not even close to the same failures.
Well at least in this case, the main person responsible paid for his negligence with his life. A shame so many innocents had to pay along with him though.
@R Go the owner who had the building constructed and ignored all the signs of structural failure died in the collapse. Hence he paid for his negligence and shoddy construction with his life.
Shame it couldn't have been built properly from the get go then everyone would have been happy and still alive.
I don’t think anyone deserves this fate. This is only my opinion though, I get that people have other sensibilities. It is a bit poetic though.
Christ, what an idiotic comment. As well researched as BrickImmortar videos may be, please tell me how, after watching a 10-minutes video on RUclips, you can reserve yourself the right to say "Good thing this person died". Especially when the accused, being dead, did not have the possibility to defend himself against the accusations made by the "witnesses". (who might just happen to have an interest in putting most of the blame on him, don’t you think?)
Even if he did deserve his death, something you casually take for granted, I’m not sure you understand exactly how this pales in comparison to the many lives tragically taken by this accident.
An excessive eagerness to designate culprits without proper research is the hallmark of the worst kind of populist vigilante justice. It’s a natural instinct, but not only is it not productive, it generally only serves to generate even more injustices.

They were BANGING on it with construction machines. It didn't move for like a week! Very solid building.

@@Novusod A high rise building such as Florida condo should be sitting on bored piles socketed into geological rock beds or very hard stratum. Hence sinkholes will not be likely to cause any full churns of collapse.
@@gorilladisco9108 I think it was in 1970s, HDB tried to demolish a block with explosives unsuccessfully. The building withstood the blast and did not budge. Since then it is accepted to demolish a building only by the top-down dismantling method, floor by floor
It boggles my mind that dozens of walls and columns across the entire building can crack and no one thought it would collapse.

Not everyone saw all the cracks to be fair, most only saw cracks on one pillar and never knew others were also starting to buckle

It's so scary when companies cut corners. Sometimes the damage can be an annoyance (as it began with cracks in the walls and sagging floors) and sometimes the damage can be deadly.
You do a great job of researching, and providing photos and news articles.
As a Singaporean, I thank you for sharing this video and story.
We Singaporeans have since taken a more pro-active and serious view of accidents and incidents caused by poor engineering designs and poor maintenance regimes.
Following Hotel New World there were other incidents like the Nicholl Highway collapse in 2003 and subway disruptions, all due to bad engineering.
The parties responsible were dealt with very severely.
There was also the bridge collapse at the junction between PIE, TPE, Upp Changi Rds E & N too in 2017; some engineers were jailed but 1 somehow had all charges against him dropped

Jerina Tan the first girl rescued, Ms. Tan was very lucky to have not been killed in that tragedy. She appears overwhelmed to have finally met with her rescuer Ali Ismail. I am amazed by the events that bring total strangers together and share a single moment in their separate lives that neither will ever forget. I wish them both well, good health, and long and happy lives.

Watched the seconds from disaster on this, which really highlighted the rescue efforts of a foreign subway engineering team. A really heroic story.

Well... it is hotter than normal if you lived in cold countries, means you are not used to regular hot equator temperatures so this may be the reason
@@alexthebullo Only the walls are built with bricks. The main superstructure are still build with reinforcement bars and concrete mix.
i visited Singapore around the end of 2013. it was actually not too bad in terms of heat and humidity. what a fantastically beautiful place Singapore was, and is. a little strict in certain aspects, but ironically, that makes it better in those respects. i imagine that after the event like in this video, the building codes where highly enforced and improved upon, since most of Singapore literally is skyscrapers. by the way, new years on that boat shaped hotel was epic haha. Rum n Cokes watching the fireworks from above was awesome.

@@williamhaynes7089 With that Florida Condo, they added a penthouse that wasn't in the original design. There are reports saying that this (adding a penthouse) allowed them to skirt local codes - some sort of loophole, it would seem.

The Sampoong collapse echoes this so much it's downright eerie.
Not really eerie. More like stupid corporate heads thinking they know more about engineering than the engineers to cut costs. Greed and stupidity never learn.

1.5M long cracks in walls, cracks in structural columns, sagging floors and warped doorframes are DEFINITE danger signs.
The owners had plenty of warning... which they ignored.

This is a well-put together account. The information, the imagery, the background music - all suggest much more resources involved here than there actually might be. It’s like a mini-documentary; excellent job.
Finally a country that properly punishes people for these atrocities
Although drug POSSESSION is a capital punishment there (kinda asking for innocent people to be framed by corrupt officials but whatever); Singapore is a borderline authoritarian state in regards to criminal law so it's not at all surprising that they self testified.
A tragedy to be sure if I've ever heard of one. I hope the families of the victims received some form of justice. I know of A young man from America in the mid nineties who recieved 4 lashes of a cane and 4 months locked up for theft and vandalism. Singapore does not play.

@@bagaboiebailey to be fair Singapore is the most least corrupt country in the South East Asian region. It's the one with the closest system concept with European or American system and it's so small it's pretty hard to be corrupt. The downside is that a lot of corrupt people from neighbouring countries choose Singapore to hide because Singapore don't give a damn as long they spent their money there

I was still a young boy when this happened. While the deathcount wasn't extremely high, it dominated the local news as it was shocking that the entire building just collapsed. RIP to those died

Cutting corners on the cost of the electrical system, was the premise of the very old fictional movie, "The Towering Inferno". The building supposedly was a modern and safe building. As they were testing things or turning on the lights for their Grand Opening, something shorted out in the basement electrical panel. Little did they know that at some other end of the circuit, about 80 floors up, it also shorted out, starting a small fire.
The building had fire sprinklers, but for some strange reason, it wasn't deemed important enough to have them to be operational before the Grand Opening party way up on the 130th floor. Sounds like the premise for a disaster movie. Oh wait.

This is what worries me about the block I live in. It was built for offices and now it's homes. A home has heavier and more contents than an office. Then they added wood cladding to it. I have had this fear since moving in 6 months ago. I can't wait to move. It just doesn't feel safe to me

After what just happened almost a month ago in Florida... I definitely recommend moving somewhere else if you don't feel safe there.

Found the channel via Fascinating Horror and my goodness... haven't watched the video yet but I don't think I've ever seen a collapsed building that just pancaked itself so badly as in the opening shot (except for WTC, but that was on an entirely different scale). Building standards around the world vary widely. I have first-hand observation of Egyptian high rise construction. I have never been so scared to ride an elevator and be in a fifth floor apartment. It would be interesting if you did a comparison of the best against the worst this crazy world has to offer in building codes, and how they are ignored to peril. By the way, I used to live in Omaha! I love your channel!

I had never even heard of this building disaster! Has there EVER been this type of failure anywhere in the world that was NOT directly linked in some way to poor, deceitful, cheating, uneducated, inexperience and/or combination(s)?! EVER?! I would comfortably bet everything I have on the answer. How many things has the world lost because of the deaths of people who weren't alive due to this kind of murder?! Yet it seems that the smell of money means more. I pray those responsible, directly or indirectly, will be made to pay a very high price one day.

The tunnelers were originally thought to potentially be the cause of the collapse when they were trying to figure out what had happened. They thought that maybe the ongoing work had led them to burrow too close to the Hotel New World - but the tunnels were nowhere near so they were quickly ruled out as a potential cause.
It'd be another ~15 years before a tunnel would be dug near to that hotel - the North East Line around Farrer Pk station - & the Farrer Pk Hotel & Hospital built above it would also later split Owen Rd into 2 sections
There was no liveload to support the weight of the building. Engineers are required to have the right calculations to avoid this.

I saw a natgeo documentary on this collapse that said the renovations did not contribute to the fall. The design simply was unable to support even an empty building for very long.
It felled sideway. The slanting pavement around the carpark was always wet as if there's a leak somewhere, eroding the structure.

I did not expect you create a Hotel New World video. Despite it's a small hotel building, it was a big deal at the time especially for a country just indepedent two decades ago.

I did rebar for 30 years. Little things such as ties for columns does so much for so little.
Adding so much weight to the building was 100% negligence.

Chicago is the city where modern building codes were first developed.
The first electric codes were developed here in 1893 for the Chicago's World Fair.
Today, in the US you have the Uniform Building Code, and then the Chicago Building Code.
I have lived in Chicago all my life, and I don't recall any similar building collapse here.
That is a testament that our code and permitting process works here.
I was a contractor in Chicago, and getting permits here are quite a pain.
But, the results prove the soundness of the approach here in Chicago.
BTW -- The first skyscraper was built here, and we have four 100+ skyscrapers here.
Also, balloon frame construction was invented here, which is how most homes are built today.
Chicagos bridges are a hot mess…

As someone with basic education in architecture I have to stress how insane this is. Structures rarely give warning before collapse, they just eventually do. This one was essentialy screaming it and noone paid attention. Structures do develop cracks as they set, but that does not normalize them. They have to be evaluated. Crack that penetrates through whole thickness of wall is essentially saying "This specific wall has almost completely failed to distribute its current load."
Furthermore building on an unstable soil using heavy materials is essentially impossible. Even four-bedroom houses may begin to unevenly sink at regular temperate conditions.
I am surprised that this piece of shoddy and criminal negligent building stood for as long as it did, how people can be so deceitful and callous is beyond me. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴

Quick point. Singapore dose not have traditional seasons such as summer, winter etc. Singapore has a wet and a dry season but temperatures are most often 76°F to 89°F the entire year. This is due to be located so near to the equator.

I was expecting morality toll to be much higher. I wasn't expecting such a high amount of survivors in that chaotic pile of concrete. Speed and patience are key when it comes to rescue attempts. Good on for all the rescuers for saving that much people. More often then not, you hear that people survived the initial moment the disastrous event took place but succumb to their injuries or other life threatening elements due to over exposure.

Seaside unfortunately had less warning signs. Typically condo association caring more about cosmetic issues then major structural columns. They knew in 2018 that collums were spalding and flaking from salt and chlorine from incorect pool deck waterproofing.

My Lego constructions have stood for decades. Except for one in which a friend picked it up and it crumbled. Had he asked me, I would have told him not to, let me do it. I built it, and I knew where its load bearing lifting points are. Maybe someday I will rebuilt it. My Lego constructions are big enough to have Lego beams inside of them to support the broad expanse of the roof or flat surface on top. Except for the RVs, they have no floors, well except for an upstairs porch. I just didn't have enough Lego sets to supply that many bricks.
This was broadcasted on NHK tv English news that night in Tokyo. I was watching but did not figured the location at first l because the hotel changed name to Hotel New World. My friend used to work in the Industrial and Commercial Bank (ICB) on the ground level. I was hoping she had been transferred to Shenton Way HQ. I found out later when I returned to Singapore that she was not there when it happened. Thank God.
So it started collapsing right after being errected. Imagine how the stresses slowly migrated from one spot to another over the course of 15 years..

My teacher was a rescuer during this event and he told us a lot about it though I can't really rmb because it was from many years ago
If this series has taught me anything, it's this:
Never take a building for granted. Always ask for any history regarding certifications, inspections, etc.
And be wary of corporate bull. Because odds are all it is can be lies and manipulation
