  • This is our walkthrough of the Fashion District (formerly The Gallery at Market East) mall in Philadelphia, PA from October 22, 2021. This is the big downtown mall in Philadelphia, placed right at the meeting point of most of the city's transit systems. This is a sprawling 3-story mall that spans 3 full city blocks. The mall that exists today bears little resemblance to the mall it was most of my lifetime. Formerly known as simply The Gallery, it was a beloved retail destination in the area, partially due to the big fancy Strawbridge & Clothier and Gimbel's comprising the anchor stores. Partially developed by The Rouse Company, the mall was aesthetically pleasing, with lots of color and pleasant earth tones. Fast forward a few years and the mall starts to die in the late 2000s. Things get so bad that the mall closed in 2015, after being partially acquired by the Macerich company, who immediately announced a multi-million dollar renovation project at the mall. The original plans for said renovation fell through, but the space was renovated in a more traditional modern mall style instead. This means very little color, very shiny marble, and trying-way-too-hard-to-be-hip posters all over the place. I don't expect this is a mall we'll be revisiting any time soon. It's sad to have to say that, because The Gallery was a treat to visit in its heyday.
    The Mall Hall of Fame blog has a very detailed article about this mall. Please do check it out if you're curious of the history:

    David Marriott, Jr. - On the Seventh Day
    Steve Gray - Wonder Groove

    ---------------------
    I'd like to say a few words about being an ambassador to your local malls. We have been taking the time to visit all the malls within a reasonable driving distance to check up on them and see how they are doing. Also filming an updated video every year or so, regardless of the lack of many changes, just so there is a video record of the health over time. We think this is an important thing to keep tabs on, especially in these wildly turbulent times. The health emergency has accelerated the impending Retail Apocalypse we've all been talking about these last several years. This was already a big problem, but the restrictions have made the issue 5x worse and likely hastened the death of the enclosed shopping mall.
    I know we've all been on pins and needles wondering how bad the fallout is going to be from all of this.
    There really is no way to know exactly unless we ALL go and do our small part to make it known how it turns out. I implore you, if you have the means to pick an area you would like to be an ambassador for, and go document your local malls. Whatever your medium, it doesn't matter, any and all documentation is necessary and vital in this day and age. Whether it be on Social Media, Flickr, RUclips, any platform gets it out there and preserves it for posterity. We can't paint this picture unless we all grab a brush...

      Most people still call it the Gallery, same as with Franklin Mills (which was renamed Philadelphia Mills a few years ago but is still on Franklin Mills Blvd, so no one really noticed or cared).

      @@RawRealRetail Maybe I mistaken this mall for another one. I never been to this mall but have seen Dan Bell did a video on it years ago. I think it might be but no matter how it looks if you loved it and have fond memories that's what counts 🙂

    I look forward to watching when I have a moment. When I was lucky enough to visit Philadelphia, this was just about (but not quite) finished. I bought some so-so items from the bakery that remained through construction. I'm sure they were upset when Century 21 filed for bankruptcy, liquidated, and didn't reopen here, despite doing so elsewhere.

      It's a new White Elephant for the Market East section of Center City, with retail taking a hit across the country, they spend millions to renovate the Gallery in to a New York style Fashion District, are they high on Banana Peels?

    Another mall that’s too big and without traditional anchors. As well, I agree regarding the posters. Why do malls in decline always put these posters up. They can’t expect the signage to be relevant to customers. Did they expect these signs will cause a increase in foot traffic. No. They are just annoying. Regarding the mall itself it’s rather nondescript. Nothing much to talk about here. Finally this property can only face further decline.

    i watched the dan bell's video and was 99% dead, aldo i must say original shape and form/decoration was amazing. this is a bland generic mall now, not to mention it had 4 floors and now has 3 since apparently they demolished an entire floor to make it like a "cake" of cement to join floor 2 to 4 with little more than a ramp vs stairs/mechanical stairs. i do admit the gallery was in bad shape, moldy and dead. yet they could have wasted 50% less of money just repairing the first 2 floors, or even restoring it to their 80's glory, and the other 2 floors make them office/living spaces since the last 2 floors where 100% dead when dan bell did his video. as well it used to be gallery 1 and 2 now is just a single hall mess i see. not to mention it is still mostly empty and still dead.

    This is a great public space for Homeless, Broke people to find shelter with free Air conditioning and Heat, hell even a public bathroom to wash in. Its a safe haven such as a Wild Life Refugee. This is amazing, but who pays the electricity and water bill? it is being subsidized by philly tax dollars. Oh wells, all in all it is still a very pretty upscale homeless shelter. Atleast it helping the poor and destitute when they have nowhere to go but loiter and seek refugee. I approve.

    • @RawRealRetail
      @RawRealRetail  11 месяцев назад

      Why would you think it is subsidized using Philly tax dollars? I would expect Macerich to be paying the bills, seeing as they own this private business.
