Such an amazing platform.
One of the best kept "secrets" is the R / S3 / RS3 series in terms of easy power and fun. The EA888 4 cylinder in the R / S3 is just a beast waiting to be unleashed! A simple tune and some bolt-on parts will put you in the 3.5s 0-60 and low 11 second quarter mile range (possibly even the 10s), and it'll be a nice purring daily driver all day every day that can get good gas mileage. The RS3 just ups that ability to crazy town levels with the same little amount of effort. If you're willing to dig into suspension and wheels, you can greatly improve the handling as well (which as you say isn't that bad to begin with).
@@theelmagoo ya... I did all that and more on my S3. Still pushes too much but boy is it fast on stage II... I drag anything that wants to in the stop light drags and all they see is a "Corolla" going way faster than it has any right to lol.

I think the entire A3/s3/rs3 and its 4 series counterpart are some of the best bang for your buck vehicles out there if you want a sporty vehicle that you can daily drive AND have a lot of fun in, all whilst maintaining practicality, (usually) reliability, safety, and a fantastic handling car no matter the season. Theyve also become VERY easy to tune/modify over the years with there being multiple great tuner companies that have tunes and performance packages at the ready for these cars at pretty decent pricing, I mean if you already have an a3 or a4 and regret not buying an s or RS model? No problem, you can make that base model perform very similarly to the S/RS model pretty damn easily with a tune and some parts. A modded rs3/rs4 is certainly absolutely no joke from a dig, its absolutely incredible how well they hook and accelerate, its like a damn rocket from a standstill which is a big part of what makes them so fun(and competitive with much more expensive cars). Sweet video! More stuff like this please! On the topic of modified Audis and unusual engine notes, you might also want to try a modified (stage 2 or 2+) B8/B8.5 Audi S4. They may not be capable of as much power (around 500-550hp seems to be the ceiling) but they have a supercharged V6, and that supercharger SCREAMS with an intake, tune, and pulley (especially the first two). They also have longitudinal architectures with a rear-biased power split meaning they can be pushed even harder through bends. As a fan of the old Group B Audi Quattros, this thing sounds the business and is likely quicker in reality than those cars by a decent margin. Very cool.

So I've had an RS3 for over four years now. It still amazes me daily. But define the term "safe". ? If the internals are stock, and it's really putting down 700whp daily, that's around 550 torque at 7500rpm (800crank hp), the crank can do it, no problem. But that's a little much for the stock rods and pins ....it will fail, sooner than later. IROZ knows this. Engine builds are a lot cheaper when you don't need to find a new block, and replace other engine bay components when it windows itself. Not to mention the DSG clutch pack is getting fried on every launch. On a lighter note, every toddler should get to experience a 10 second 1/4 mile!
@@bruceeverett5372 I mean probably safe enough to daily and do the occasional pull, but yeah you definitely wouldn't want to be launching it all the time, aftermarket internals are always best for the reasons you said. Zach, I may be wrong, but the vw Audi O7k(rs3 engine) architecture is based on the old group B/IMSA 20 valve 5 cylinder. The 07k was first designed and used in the 90s in Europe only for the Euro van. Then in the late 90s the 07k architecture was used in Lamborghini development and in the 2000s vw choked the shit out of this engine (in fear of GTI market competition) and placed it in every vw model as a workhorse motor.
I do wish they used the 5 cylinder in the A4 platform in some capacity. The supercharged/turbocharged V6 is cool too, but an I5 in the A4 platform would be a true lineage to the Ur Quattro.
I don't know about summer money. this build would be around 65k which is still pretty competitive for a luxury car that runs 9s. but def not cheap at least to me.
I understand what Zach is saying and this is relatively cheap for the power, but what kind of person working a summer job can afford a $40k+ car with probably 10k in mods? lol
Agreed, I wish they were 40k though. I payed 62k for a 2018 with 21k miles last year. I know I over-payed a little but it was the cleanest example I could find with all the right options.
I miss that wookie waaaaale, its like nothing else. When you unleash it in the heartland I promise you people will turn around. Had kids who know what it was roll down windows in winter and they were in front of me at a stop sign. Especially with a decatted downpipe the only mod.
What I love about the RS3 is the engine is not only essentially half a Gallardo 5.0L, it's also an upgraded version of a mk5 Jetta/Golf 2.5L 07k. The RS3 gives me the desire to make my 2010 Jetta into a sleeper lol
RS3’s are pretty rad! Want to beat just about anybody in a drag or roll race, besides big dogs with 800+hp? Just get an RS3 and tune it. I am curious to see what Matt and Zach are going to say about the GR Corolla when they get to take it out for a review. I know they’re going to like it, but I’m curious what they’re thoughts on the price are going to be. After all, the GR Corolla is going to be $50k+ after markups, and that’s hitting on low mileage RS3 prices, of which, the RS3 is a much better overall car. So very curious for that review to come.
I was really between an RS3, or Supra for my fun car. Ended up with the Supra because i enjoy the styling better, but I do envy the sound of the 5 cylinder!
I enjoy my Alfa 159's the 2.4 diesel is a streight 5. The stock internals can handle 5500 rpm, 400 hp+ and 800 Nm plus. The gearbox is the weak link with a sensible max of 750Nm
Was going to get the new golf r, I currently have a 19. I decided to order the new rs3 instead. The golf r was a blast I must say especially in the winter with studded tires, it ripped through the snow like nothing
Although it's likely the least interesting of the bunch, people always forget about the Atlas 5-cylinder. In 1995 GM began development of a modular series of DOHC, VVT (exhaust only) inline truck engines. In 2002 the inline 6-cylinder was released first in their midsize SUVs, followed by the 4 and 5 cylinder variants in their compact pickups. They came in relatively large displacements for low-end truck torque. 2.8L in the four, 3.5L in the five, and 4.2L in the six. In 2007, the smaller two were revised, with the four bumping to 2.9L, and the five hitting 3.7L with 242 HP and torque (up from 220 hp and 225 lb.ft in the 3.5L). This 3.5L is the engine in my Colorado. It has pretty good torque off the line, but the fuel economy isn't great.
@@TML34 mine's been close to this power level for nearly 4 years and 50k miles. Not a single problem. You'll find all of them to be the same - the powertrain on these is immensely over engineered.

I don't know about summer money. this build would be around 65k which is still pretty competitive for a luxury car that runs 9s. but def not cheap at least to me.
USED ones in the Chicago suburbs are at least $60k for lower mileages ones. crazy prices
Theyre overpriced here in Canada too. Even the S3's. So frustrating haha.
here to in the philly area why I ordered the 2022 for 65k
That’s insane that you can beat hyper cars in the quarter with this car!!!
That’s only the starting point. Plenty of them running low 9’s and 8’s. Fastest RS3 runs high 7’s.
I think a "mouth sounds" chapter should be a requirement for all One Takes from now on.
Hey Zack, great video! Really glad to see these back! 😄
Love your review Zack ! And your comment on society was spot on.
This interior is such a future classic.
Loved the Cessna analogy!
You guys should review a IMS 1100 Rs3. I would like your guys take on that one
I understand what Zach is saying and this is relatively cheap for the power, but what kind of person working a summer job can afford a $40k+ car with probably 10k in mods? lol
Brother it's not that deep. Obviously you can't but an rs3 with sumner job money
Try a 60k car with 20k in mods haha
@@Sixty2OneThirty last I checked. Every RS3 used, was selling for new MSRP money.
2 years ago you could get a high miles car for 49k..
Agreed, I wish they were 40k though. I payed 62k for a 2018 with 21k miles last year. I know I over-payed a little but it was the cleanest example I could find with all the right options.
@@iStealBeatz worth more now
I miss that wookie waaaaale, its like nothing else. When you unleash it in the heartland I promise you people will turn around. Had kids who know what it was roll down windows in winter and they were in front of me at a stop sign. Especially with a decatted downpipe the only mod.
These are awesome cars, love seeing them on the channel!
What I love about the RS3 is the engine is not only essentially half a Gallardo 5.0L, it's also an upgraded version of a mk5 Jetta/Golf 2.5L 07k. The RS3 gives me the desire to make my 2010 Jetta into a sleeper lol
great choice of words, Zack. So spontaneous, love it.
Baby seat on the back 😂
such a fun car boys! I just got my rs3 about 2 weeks ago
When's the Supercharged E90 M3 video coming out gentlemen?
Excellent story. I love my 2019 RS3 and I have a 2020 Porsche 718 Spyder. If Had to choose one it would be the RS3.
Must have been a damn good summer job
Acura had a 2.5 inline 5 cylinder in the Acura vigor 92-94. I had a 125 zex kit on mine, it was a great sounding car with an exhaust.
I was really between an RS3, or Supra for my fun car. Ended up with the Supra because i enjoy the styling better, but I do envy the sound of the 5 cylinder!
Get a KW Coilover kit 👍🏻 They have the DDC & V3 available for the RS3. I’m only familiar with the V3 so I don't know what the DDC Kit requires.
I enjoy my Alfa 159's the 2.4 diesel is a streight 5. The stock internals can handle 5500 rpm, 400 hp+ and 800 Nm plus. The gearbox is the weak link with a sensible max of 750Nm
Boom boom baby, Rs3 all day! Still got my 2018💪🏽😎
Dang, sounds just like an R8. Very cool.
If I could find an RS3 in the 40k range I would own one already. Every one of these I see that goes up for sale is still 56k+
Insane the price they are holding
The video and car was awesome... But the legal services ad at the end was the icing on the cake! xD
RS3 owner and former Evo owner. Nailed the comparison.
Audi is on top in every class no comparison to other brands
Yes Zack! B5 S4! We're speaking the same language now.
Was going to get the new golf r, I currently have a 19. I decided to order the new rs3 instead. The golf r was a blast I must say especially in the winter with studded tires, it ripped through the snow like nothing
Ford focus rs used 5 cylinder also some VW in the past, acura legend, fiat stilo and alfa 159 comes to mind.
Acura and VW made NA I5s as well. I haven't driven one but the I5 Colorado shop truck I drove at a college job was slow AF paired with a 4 speed auto.
Stock block engine, stock trans, stock axles. That’s beyond impressive!
Not for long though.
@@TML34 hahah
@@TML34 mine's been close to this power level for nearly 4 years and 50k miles. Not a single problem. You'll find all of them to be the same - the powertrain on these is immensely over engineered.
@@TML346 years and 110k. Still perfect! Drives amazing and still fast as Fukk.
@ryanb8736 What mods are you running? I have a 2019 TTRS stage 1+ on E85 and am looking to go to a bigger turbo.
These cars are built so well. I wish Japanese manufacturers would adopt the same engineering and build quality. Instead of milking the hell out of a platform and giving us sub par sports cars from factory.
3:15 did anyone hear that almost “PEW” sound as it flew by the camera lol???
this things are special , unique engine ,small ,pratical and judging the huracan v10 ,pretty reliable and even the interior is cool to me with the hiden screen and on top of that looks cool. The only way this car could been cooler was if it had a longitudinal mounted engine and if it was rwd
That eyebrow-raising major 10th two-tone exhaust note is in the engine hall of fame!
This powerplant has so much potential. Why can’t audi make a car like s2k/evora/cayman etc etc and put this in it. Instant classic. Just make it a dam rwd, manual, under 3200lb. Price it 70-90k.
As an owner of this car, sometimes I wish it had a manual but with the size of the turbo on this engine it would suck lmao
@@RS3NDIT trust me. i had evo ix before w/ big turbo that lagged until 4k rpm. but it had all the character in the world, and still one of most fun i've had in any car i've owned. it's not the 1/4 mi times or 0-60 man. smiles per gallon is all it matters as a street sports car.
@@yooseemotoringchannel3357 trust me I know lol. My first car was a BRZ so I fully understand not driving for the best time, I just feel like the 7 speed dct this car comes with suits it better than any manual could
@@RS3NDIT i would partially agree with you, since it is very difficult to find good manual box with good gearing. it's a personal thing imo. I drove few DCT cars including cayman w/ pdk. and I always end up missing the manual shifter and 3 pedal action. So i always find myself looking for good manual cars. yes it's a dying breed. and it makes me sad =(
Sold my RS3 for a Taycan. I went from one of the best sounding cars in the world to 👽 spaceship sounds. The RS3 will always be one of the best cars I've ever owned and I miss it sometimes.
E cars are too much like driving an appliance if you're on a mountain road
Worth watching just for the Cessna punch line
Pontiac did the same tire stagger idea with the Grand Prix GXP, in 2005
I believe Saab also did this with one of the last 9-3 or 9-5 Aero cars.
The engine is great, but honestly im more impressed by the transmission, what other transverse automatic can hold 700HP reliably?
You didn’t hear it slipping? It won’t last long.
@@TML34 that's not slipping it was ignition traction control might be a ds1 tuned car. You can get clutches for 1200 hp and trans is still fine.
@@TML34 it doesn't slip, not at this power level lol.
@@TML34 that wasn't slip, it was wheel spin. These transmissions will hold 800+hp reliably, stock, and you can beat on them repeatedly.
I'm here, Zack is here, you are here. Nice 👍🏾
My buddy Will on RUclips just bought a 2022 RS3 sweet ride
The smart money is a cheap used S3, then add a tune/intake/downpipe and get in the 11's. (That's what I did, and only wish it was a manual trans). I was juuust able to do 4 wheels burnouts, and ran the RS3 tire stagger with 200TW tires up front as well as all the 034 Chassis bits.
This car just sounds so good
are the axles really that strong? Us n54 guys snap axles all day over 600 wheel. That's impressive.
Yeah you just have to be careful if you run slicks at 600hp+ iirc
I love the fact that a pretty smart car journalist was left to “who big speed daddy” to describe a car.
what summer job is this man working to make enough for this car god dam
😊Music to my ears 🎉
7:57 Not sure about the US but here in OZ we have a 5 cylinder ford focus surprisingly named the XR5. My old boss’s Mazda BT50 work utility had a 5 cylinder motor in made by Mercedes but it’s not a performance vehicle lol
I have an Audi RS3, the only negative point I can mention is the famous unwanted lag that everyone hates when starting from a light or a stop sign.
Does someone know what the phone mount between the two center air vents is? Been looking for one for my A3 but could never find a good option.
Its from Clear Mounts, and they are a very quality piece, easy to install, magnet is strong. Had one in my 16 S3, loved it.
It’s from EMD Auto
@@sundogkid Awesome, thanks for the help. Just bought one.
"700hp its not a crazy power number" what a world we live in.
My dream car. Would love to see a comparison between this series and the new one.
Great video, but I wish there were more front-facing camera shots.
well that's a beast of a car
FYI the NEW RS3 8Y does have the “e torque differential” with drift mode, same as the Golf R, you are driving an older 8V RS3. Also the 8Y is the fastest compact sedan around the Nurburgring, dethroning the BMW M2 Competition. Also the newer mk3 TTRS has the same aluminum block, the mk2 does not. Sometimes your guys’ history session is a lot more assuming then factual lol
The brakes are definitely the biggest problem for me for track use (seats also don't hold you in place). Motor sound and performance is great though.
My problem with the rs3 is that it doesn’t matter how cheap it is to modify. Given the used price of the car ($60,00cad) it still costs $85,000 to reach 10 seconds
