I definitely pick Virgin Killer. it was my first full Scorpions album I listened to. I received a cassette my dad used to jam to and I was sold. Catch Your Train and Backstage Queen coupled with Yellow Raven and In Your Park just make this album smooth like butter. not very many people recognize this album unfortunately. I wish more people would get into early Scorpions 🦂
Virgin Killer is much better...but the best song in this 'battle' is Lights Out... Actually 'Lights Out' is one of the best hard rock songs of all time.
Pete excellent pairing, I'm with you on the Scorpions. One of my favorite bands in the late 70's & they were pretty much an unknown back then, probably nonexistent promotion and no tours of the USA kept them that way. I did see UFO 3 times back then & they always impressed.
No contest… Klaus Meine's vocals, Roth's inventive guitar, plus the melodic songs push Virgin Killer over the top. This album also predates lights out by a year. My 70s prog rock band used to perform Catch Your Train and at that time, no one was playing solos like Uli jon Roth. Don't get me wrong, I love Schenker (and saw the Lights Out tour), but early Scorps were to me the perfect blend. I've recently rediscovered my love of old scorps and have come to appreciate their musicianship, sense of melody and range of styles within a single album.
I've been a fan of both bands for 40 years, but Lights Out is my desert island disc. Although I agree there are some weaker tracks on the album, Lights Out, Too Hot to Handle and Love to Love are three of my favorite songs ever. I could listen to them on repeat all day long and never get tired ;-)
All I need in my UFO collection is "Strangers In The Night." Their "Lights Out" studio album with "Love To Love" I feel is their strongest & the title song "Lights Out" is still today one of the best rock anthems of all time.
These are both wonderful albums. Lights Out was the first UFO album I ever bought and Virgin Killer, while I didn't buy it until years later, I fell in love with it from first listen. They both have their share of high points but they also have their flaws. Fantastic musicianship on both. I'm going to go with Scorpions today but I could change my mind tomorrow.
This Classic Album War has made me think of a possible idea for a show. Both UFO and The Scorpions have fantastic logos. How’s about doing a kind of history of band logos with your favourites displayed on screen?
1970s Scorpions were probably the best Heavy band overall I think Black Out was Thier swan song, from there they cashed it in and became a very successful hair band
Dude you're getting better at this. You're making it harder to decide who is better. You're picking comparable contenders. Both of these albums are badass
If you would of asked me eons ago, I would of said virgin killer, today I say Lights Out, haven't listened to them in there entirety for eons either and they are both pretty fucking great, but there was something about Lights Out that was quite remarkable...i really enjoy these album wars, and thanks for introducing me to anglagard!!......
Never heard either album (although I of course know and *love* "Too Hot To Handle"), but I very much enjoyed this video as I enjoy *all* your videos, Pete. That's why I'm subscribed to you and watch your videos!! 😊👍🤘
I probably lean towards “Lights Out” overall, but it’s “Virgin Killer” I’m reaching for after watching this. “Obsession” and “Force It” are my Top 2 UFO albums as well, Pete.
Virgin Killer was the first Scorpions album that I heard back in the 70's and I was blown away.Great songs insane lead guitar and crystal clear production. Lights Out is a strong UFO album and I like it alot, even if it is somewhat lighter overall than some of their other albums. Some very good songs and the recording is well produced too.I have to go with Scorpions here.Songs like Pictured Life, Virgin Killer,Polar Nights,Catch Your Train are just a bit more impactful, although Lights Out,Love to Love,Just Another Suicide are really good, just not quite up to the level of Virgin Killer.
The double live album (vinyl) tokyo tapes was one of the most inspirational guitar albums I ever heard. Although the new players had speed, I never thought they "sang" with their instruments the way Uli did in live tracks like are on that record. Fly to the Rainbow and Virgin Killer are some great records, but it's hearing it come together live that thrills me. Fly to the rainbow's interlude section is a goosbumps moment for me for some reason. Seems reminiscent of Hendrix 1983 also.
UFO is and has always been my favorite band of all time my god what an amazing catalog!! Between these 2 I would pick Lights out but man the Scorps are nothing short of amazing as well. I agree with Pete here though. UFOs Force It was my first UFO listen and changed my life forever it has the best most raw Schenker work plus best classic UFO songs of that era. If your just getting into UFO do yourself a favor and get Force it today and turn it up you will love it!!
Wow!!... There's some old dude's watching your channel!! (Me Included!!) Just as Michael taught his brother Rudy Guitar licks back in the day, I'm pretty sure Uli did the same for Michael... Both albums are equally good to me, I can't pick a favorite!!
The Roth-era Scorpions music sounds so bizarre and unique these days. Back in the day, some of us were glad to see the back of him, as we got a bit cheesed off with those 20-minute guitar solos and spaced out sounds. Well, those were very common in those days but they certainly aren't now. Have you seen him recently touring as UJR and do you like his stuff?
It's Lights Out for me, but I love both. Not a huge fan of Uli Jon Roths vocals, but he is a fabulous guitarist as of course is Michael Schenker. The fact that Phil Mogg sings all the UFO songs whereas Klauss gives way to Uli on a couple of songs gives Lights Out the edge for me.
Catch Your Train was the very first Scorpions song I ever heard back in 1978 or 9. I was hooked for life. However, having seen both bands many times over the years, I have to go with UFO, hands down. Every time I've seen Scorpions I must admit I was bored. Too much of the commercial stuff and less of what caused me to fall in love in the first place. UFO on the other hand blow me away every time. Last time I saw them a couple years ago, the last two songs of the main set were Love to Love and Rock Bottom. Wow! Vinnie Moore was the right choice when the time came. I did think the encore was kind of dull though. What I called the double talk encore. Doctor Doctor and Shoot Shoot. But I got my dose of Love to Love and Rock Bottom. And I know Rock Bottom is from Phenomenon, but I always kind of saw Lights Out and Phenomenon as two sides of the same coin. And of course they did do Lights Out and Too Hot to Handle. There's a good performance of Rock Bottom on RUclips from a Wacken festival I suggest everyone check out.
I would have to go with Virgin Killer, but it was very close for me. This is a really tough choice, i understand everyone who would vote for Lights Out.
Good pick, Virgin Killer smokes from Pictured Life to Yellow Raven. Lights Out is a near second. For me, Roth was the more technical guitar player than Schenker, though both are easy in my top 10 of fav guitar players.
You can't go wrong with either. Virgin Killer is my favorite Roth era Scorpions album and Lights Out is my favorite Schenker era UFO album. Having to choose between them would be tough, but I'd go with UFO Lights Out. I love every song on both albums. But the UFO one hits closer to home with me. My first introduction to UFO was a red vinyl 45 of too hot to handle I bought for $0.99 at a local 5 and 10 store back in 1978. That got me hooked. I bought the album and it hardly left my turntable throughout my high school years. It still brings back memories every time I listen to it. Love virgin killers, but I wasnt as attached to it. My first and all time favorite Scorpions album is Lovedrive. Funny that both that and Lights Out have Michael Schenker on it. Sorry Uli. I see on the facebook page that Im not alone. UFO lights out is way ahead.
Am I the only one old enough to remember that Micheal and Uli co-wrote Fly to the Rainbow, the title track of the Scorpions second album. I was quite obsessed with both bands as long as Schenker or Roth were involved. Scorpions lost my intrest somewhere between Love Drive and Blackout and it wasn't until about 2 years ago that I finaly listened to no place to run. Basicaly, where Micheal goes, I will follow.
Definitely a tough one but I have to go with Virgin Killer. Uli was one of the reasons I started playing. I actually prefer Obsession from the UFO catalog too...production on that album is amazing.
Ulrich Roth had a voice that sounded like the Martian on Buggs Bunny that said he was going to blow up the Earth with his space Modulator. That same type of Voice appeared on Slayer - Die By the Sword. So Virgin Killer wins for me . Back when every song didn't feature the Klaus Meine ballad voice. No one ever mentions it but Klaus Meine used to scream like Dan McCafferty of Nazareth on their Heavy Metal song. The last album to feature that type of Vocal was Animal Magnetism. That's why I prefer 1970s Scorpions. Virgin Killer had the screaming Vocal on the title track and Catch Your Train , the Comedy of Hell Cat , the Beautiful Walk in Your Park , the prelude to China White Nuclear War Anthem Crying Days, the Dreamy Yellow Raven , the incredible Polar Nights , and the spending quality time alone Anthem Suspender Love which is a fantastic CD bonus track, although the song title brings visually images of Robin Williams as Mork and Kevin Du Brow of Quiet Riot the song is great. Lights Out is great but Virgin Killer is even better
Was listening to Scorp's Virgin Killer just a few hours ago.....Uli Roth is a freakin' wizard on the six string! My only complaint is when you have a vocalist like Klaus Meine, you let him sing EVERY song, you stick to your rippin' guitar riffs and solos! This is a tie, for me! Been buying up every Schenker album in existence-he's just that good!
OMG dude that is not fair because both are among my favorite of both bands, having both bands entire collections, Micheal Schenker leaves UFO the create his own band MSG
@@vbassone You don't get this whole album war thing! It's called a vote and an opinion!! As a matter of fact it looks like UFO is winning this one so that would mean my opinion is more valid than yours!! Yo face!!😂😂😂😂🤣🤣
@@vbassone If that's true Pete is friend of yours might I suggest you conduct yourself a little bit more tact and grace on your friends channel and stop engaging and childish outbursts that people's opinions are wrong!! @@vbassone Say what you will but UFO is going to win that makes me feel totally vindicated!! My opinion must be the right one.👍Oh you were done when you said my opinion was wrong.
Here's the late Paul Raymond's guitarist from his solo band showing how to play one of my favorite Schenker solos. It's spot on ruclips.net/video/ao2IQZlPNDk/видео.html
Thought this was a 'tie' until Love To Love was mentioned. Yes i covered Too Hot in a band but no Uli (never that good). That tune tips the scales. Lights Out.
I'd say virgin Killers is the heaviest Uli era Album. Although, one of the heaviest songs would be He's a woman, she's a man off of taken by force. Helloween did a heavy copy of it. ruclips.net/video/9hQeVGJXLMQ/видео.html
Going with UFO great great album. I love the songs that didn't do it for you. Those songs that make UFO so so awesome. Their melodic music writing is the best. still love the Scorps tho
UFO by a small margin for me simply because I prefer Michael Schenker's playing slightly more the Uli Jon Roth's. Another Perfect Day Vs Thunder and Lightning would be an interesting contest, two bands trying something a bit different to their normal style.
I had passed off Virgin Killer at first, as the album that might as well have only had Pictured Life on it. Now, I can't say there's a song on the album I don't like. The title is very apt, the album is 'killer'. That being said, Lights Out tops it in my opinion, as I think Schenker's only performance that nears this is Assault Attack. Needless to say, as a rock fan, these are both must own albums. Edit: these albums might as well be called each guitarist's magnum opus, not just Schenker's. While I prefer In Trance slightly overall, I think this is undoubtedly Uli's best showing.
This one would have been a lot tougher if you'd have put Virgin Killer up against one of the classic UFO albums, like Force It or No Heavy Petting. Putting it up against the weakest of the 70's Schenker-era albums make the Scorpions an EASY win! One has to wonder what Lights Out might have sounded like if Leo Lyons had produced it, instead of the complete castration of the UFO sound by Ron Nevison.
Love both but have to go with UFO Lights Out. Here is something rare. 1 of the few shows Michael did on the Lovedrive tour before quitting to form MSG. He does a great job doing Uli Roth solos. A matter of fact, I like Michael's solo to Backstage Queen even more than Uli's ruclips.net/video/uZZHqIoEqp8/видео.html
tbh I've never heard *Virgin Killer*. Will have to give it a few listens. The Damned's version of "Alone Again Or" is my favorite, followed very closely by the one by Love.
Rumour has it virgin killer is roman polanski,s favourite album sleeve!!! - but all joking aside virgin killer is the winner for me - lights out is gr8, but virgin killer is that bit better
Bizarre comparison. There's always a place for 2nd rate Hendrix impressions, comedy German accents and Lolita/Gumby album covers , but it's obviously not up there with a masterpiece like UFO's Lights Out.
Lights Out is perfect, one of rock's best albums from any era/genre. I don't have Virgin Killer, partly because the cover's dreadful. Even men getting undressed in Battersea Powerstation is better than that tasteless idea.
The only reason early Scorpions were not bigger is they were from Germany and in the 1970s a lot of the Scorps albums were scarcely promoted in the states as was any German act period. You had to know a real metal connaisseur to hear that shit. Think about it Kraftwerk would have been huge too if not from Germany.
im sorry.....UFO . beats!!! this is indeed very close very good picks!!! Uli jon roth is truly bad ass, but the both have their own gifts!!! i love them both!!
Don't say "the" Scorpions. There is no "the". No article. Makes it sound weak. I didn't like when Roth sang. That's why he left. To do his Hendrix thing with Electric Sun. You should talk about Lonesome Crow some time. By the way I still have an imported Virgin Killer on vinyl with the cracked glass pic.
Come on give it up for Roth just listen to him singing the " Desire " at the end of Hell Cat, I always liked it but a friend of mine used to winch at that. Lonesome Crow is also the first release on the legendary Krautrock label Brain.
I agree with you.
But I'd love to see a "war" between "Tokyo Tapes" and "Strangers in the Night", both legendary live-albums!
I've done that on the Facebook page before...might revisit that again here on the channel when & if we get to live album wars.
Greatest live albums ever.
Better even than Frampton!
Yes both great.Rock bottom. Wooo
I definitely pick Virgin Killer. it was my first full Scorpions album I listened to. I received a cassette my dad used to jam to and I was sold. Been a huge UFO fan since 1976 and Lights Out is my favorite studio album by them. They have my vote any day.
UFO are one of the most criminally underrated bands in rock. Not their best album, but hearing them spoken about again means they win it for me!
Hi there, just curious, what UFO album do you think is the best they did?
The best UFO albums are a tie between 1Hour Space Rock and Force It . That's not just an opinion it's a fact . Prince Kajuku 4 Ever
Virgin Killer is much better...but the best song in this 'battle' is Lights Out... Actually 'Lights Out' is one of the best hard rock songs of all time.
Can't say I disagree there! GREAT song!
Very close but I pick UFO. The title track Lights Out is a great hard rock song. Try me and Love to Love both are amazing with great guitar solos.

Lights Out. I love “No heavy petting” also. Obsession is my 2nd fav behind the mighty “Strangers in the night”
The Wild, The Willing & The Innocent = best UFO album of all time. "Top shelf" as you say!
UFO. Lights Out. Just for the guitar solo alone by Michael Schenker on the title track. One of my favorite solos ever.
Same.
Both guitar solos are great, but that closing solo may be the greatest guitar solo ever.
All I need in my UFO collection is "Strangers In The Night." Their "Lights Out" studio album with "Love To Love" I feel is their strongest & the title song "Lights Out" is still today one of the best rock anthems of all time.

U.F.O. Phenomenon & Force It best studio Lps!!

UFO over the Scorps all day long
@ Wash yer mouth out! There's no fillers on Lights Out, there's plenty on Virgin Killer!
“Lights Out” is our pick. A couple of questions-what is your all-time favorite guitar? Favorite guitar brand?
This one is really easy for me. Lights Out is a masterpiece.
SCORPIONS- Virgin Killer is much better, the best band and the best album!
I like that period of Scorpions a lot. But to me it is way inferior to UFO. They are way more memorable in their Song making.

Definitely two of my top records from that era. I’m a huge fan of UFO, especially Schenker. It’s a tossup in my eyes

Virgin Killer, I love the cover and the music!

The Scorpions last good album was Face The Heat from 1993.

Putting it up against the weakest of the 70's Schenker-era albums make the Scorpions an EASY win! One has to wonder what Lights Out might have sounded like if Leo Lyons had produced it, instead of the complete castration of the UFO sound by Ron Nevison.
every 70's era scorpions album beats any ufo
Love both but have to go with UFO Lights Out.
Here is something rare. 1 of the few shows Michael did on the Lovedrive tour before quitting to form MSG. He does a great job doing Uli Roth solos. A matter of fact, I like Michael's solo to Backstage Queen even more than Uli's ruclips.net/video/uZZHqIoEqp8/видео.html
Their both great got go with the scorps on this one
Virgin Killer is my favorite Scorpions album. I only like Roth & Michael Schenker Scorpions. Lights Out is only my 3rd favorite UFO studio album.
tbh I've never heard *Virgin Killer*. Will have to give it a few listens. The Damned's version of "Alone Again Or" is my favorite, followed very closely by the one by Love.
At your earliest convenience, listen to Tokyo Tapes in its entirety
Rumour has it virgin killer is roman polanski,s favourite album sleeve!!! - but all joking aside virgin killer is the winner for me - lights out is gr8, but virgin killer is that bit better
I heard Polanski was also a fan of the Blind Faith album sleeve.
@@nicholasthornley9708 yeh he has the picture disc lol
Best UFO album is The Wild the Willing and the Innocent by some way!
Bizarre comparison. There's always a place for 2nd rate Hendrix impressions, comedy German accents and Lolita/Gumby album covers , but it's obviously not up there with a masterpiece like UFO's Lights Out.
Cutting! Funny, though!
UFO 'Lights Out'
Lights Out is perfect, one of rock's best albums from any era/genre. I don't have Virgin Killer, partly because the cover's dreadful. Even men getting undressed in Battersea Powerstation is better than that tasteless idea.
UFO---Not Even Close !!!!!!!!!!!!
FOR ME ITS UFO LIGHTS OUT
Scorpions
Tokyo Tapes dude ...
UFO Lights Out
UFO for me ..100%
im sorry.....UFO . beats!!! this is indeed very close very good picks!!! Uli jon roth is truly bad ass, but the both have their own gifts!!! i love them both!!
Lights Out for me. Not familiar with the Scorpions one.
Lights Out UFO by a hair
Don't say "the" Scorpions. There is no "the". No article. Makes it sound weak. I didn't like when Roth sang. That's why he left. To do his Hendrix thing with Electric Sun.
You should talk about Lonesome Crow some time.
By the way I still have an imported Virgin Killer on vinyl with the cracked glass pic.
@ Much.
Come on give it up for Roth just listen to him singing the " Desire " at the end of Hell Cat, I always liked it but a friend of mine used to winch at that. Lonesome Crow is also the first release on the legendary Krautrock label Brain.
I think Roth left because of Herman Rarebell’s push towards a different sound. When you Roth talk about his departure, he just says that it was time.
