- Instant deaths - Have to start over each time - Random patterns Sounds like a pretty ordinary final boss fight to me. Dave just wants the least challenge possible.
The real issue with this boss, and most of the "difficult" bosses in this game, is the time it takes to beat them. All the final bosses take more than 5 minutes to beat without messing up and have multiple instant kill moves. Honestly the whole game is filled with cheap shots, especially in the second story mode.
_"Why would they put an instant death in the boss fight?"_ Literally every GOOD final boss fight of a 2D Sonic has had them. The most popular one in Sonic 2 was a two-boss fight level with 0 rings! GET FUCKING GOOD!
The difference with that though is that dying to that boss is not as punishing as this because you can get back to the boss pretty quickly. Here if you die it will take a very long time to get back where you were.
Soooo sonic 3 and sonic a knuckles is bad? And at least those games take 10 minutes to beat, they also keep the fights simple unlock superstars that have 6+ attack patterns in the final bosses
