You two are who I call real bikers. You ride bikes that you know there is a chance they are going to brake down. But you know how to fix them on the side of the road. I think that is so cool. Sally, back in the mid 70s, i built a 88 in shovel. At first it was high compression. As i learned, i dropped the compression, and that motor was the best engine i ever had. Balance is very important. The big inches with low compression was the ticket. I put a ton of miles on that motor and had lots of fun with the performance. Even pasted thru Colorado a few times !!! Lol. Glad you are paying attention, it will pay off in the long run
    Great video.

    Lower comp pistons 8:1 short duration high lift cams, 270-280 % , low overlap,and big inlet valves , c v carb s u will do. Balance rods pistons wrist pins, then crank balance. You only need high comp pistons with 300% cams, as cylinder pressure is lower. Base plate is gasket problem. Good luck. Fxr best h-d frame.

    If something happened to the inspection plate it isnt a big deal. We use to jack them up left and right. Jist get some plate aluminum and copy bolt hole pattern on to plate. Cut plate to dimensions and bobs your uncle. A bike shop could do it if need be. No big deal. Side note, pull that plate off and have a shop check the mating surface. It is probably warpped or something. The sop can machine it back flat and fix your leak issue. Then be careful when you are bolting it back on. Being careful to use the right pattern to tighten it down.

      Oh sweet yeah i guess it is just a plate with holes! I’ve seen abunch of these cases for sale without the plates and i was thinking oh crap, lol.

    Delkrons are way over kill unless your running top fuel, LOL. Or a seriously big bore monster motor. But they're surely better then stock cases. Everyone talks about the bad fuel milage of mikuni carbs. Mostly its people that are used to near stock motors with cv carbs. Cv's get good milage but no real big hit to your wrist like a mikuni. Also s&s carbs aint miserly carbs either. SPEED COSTS, HOW FAST DO YOU WANNA GO!

    • @stevenkovacs2766
      @stevenkovacs2766 6 месяцев назад +3

      Ya l really like her and her husband and thecway they look at life but l think she's a little off on this post. Mikuni's can absolutely be tuned for fuel mileage abd still better than any S&S. To me it sounds like the engine combo is just mismatched a little for what they want. Plus higher compression pistons can be made the same weight as the original. Higher compression equals more vibration imo. Physical height of the piston would be the least of my concern balance wise.

    Found your page a couple days ago. As to your FXR. The excessive vibration concerns me? Are you saying that the crank that you used was not trued ? As far as your stat or plug there used to be a holder to keep them in place. The manufactured ones were a little light , we used to make them out of light gauge sheet metal. They always worked. Have you looked the the case plate to see if it is warped? You may be able to fix that with some light sand paper and a piece of glass. I also love the S&S E carbs. Have you ever heard of the Yost power tubes? They help with the atomization of the fuel when you accelerate heavy. Like your channel. Keep it up.

    Your compression ratio should be based on the intake valves closing timing. It's a spec called "corrected compression ratio." It's figured from the point the intake closes. If you are using 10.5:1 Wiseco Pistons with an EV27? That will never fly. The EV 27 has a very early closing intake. That's what causes your 210 psi cranking compression. You are setup, compression-wise for a .600 lift cam with a late closing intake. You are dealing with pre-ignition that contributes to your vibration issues. It causes the loose hardware you describe. The starter issues are all due to cam/compression setup. The early FXR used the same flywheel as the late Shovel from the factory. It's balanced at 50%. Which relies heavily on the engine mounting system to absorb vibration even with stock pistons. The Wiseco pistons just exacerbate that issue. In short, the best thing you can do, (aside from losing Dragon Man's number), is choose a much bigger cam ( which has it's own set of new issues), or put 9:1 pistons from Wiseco in it, or OE Mahle pistons and have a competent shop remove .060 from the head gasket surface. This gives you 9.1:1 on most Evo heads. No need for comp releases. No need for an aftermarket starter that won't work any better than the Denso and won't last as long. You will have a solid 75-80 hp evo with stock reliability and have a lot less issues with your FXR. This is all stuff we learned back in the 80's when the EVO hit the street. We used to work dealer service departments during rallies and several of us used to ride these things all over the Country. Now, it's Touring bikes due to age and wear. They are very robust if you resist the temptation to over modify them. I'm still running an 88' sportster dragbike I built in 1991. and won Sturgis with in '94. There aren't a lot of secrets to them at this point. Just be mindful of where you gather your information.

    Years ago my Son bought a used Pure Steel Custom. It had a 96cu. S&S with 200/205 compression. It shook like a sombitch. It destroyed headlight bulbs, it shook the screws out of the speedometer face so that shook inside and loosened bolts. After the second time of putting large amounts of money into it, it was time for it to go. I hope you have better luck than my Son, if not it's going to get costly. I would hate to see you go through that.
